Apply For College Financial Aid With The Fafsa
If anybody in your family is attending college, take a few minutes to complete the FAFSA .
This application is used by the U.S. Department of Education, your state government, and the university to determine how much need-based financial aid you qualify for.
Without the FAFSA, your aid package will not include:
- Federal Pell Grants
- Work-study programs
- College need-based aid
In other words, your only three payment options for college without the FAFSA are cash, scholarships, and private student loans with notably higher interest rates. A FAFSA application is required to receive any type of federal student loan.
The application window for each FAFSA filing season opens on October 1. As some aid is distributed on a first come first serve basis, file as early as possible to have the best chance of getting the most aid possible.
In addition to being free, the application only takes a few minutes to complete. It can really be one of the easiest ways to get free money.

Can I Cash A Check Without An Id
With the exception of endorsing your check to a friend or family member, all of the check cashing places above will require at least one form of ID, sometimes two. If your ID is expired, then technically it is not valid and wont count as a form of identification.
If you do not have an ID, you have three options:
- Endorse the check to someone else
- Cash the check online
- Sign up with a bank and use its online app

Example: How Much It Costs To Cash A Government Of Canada Cheque At A Payday Loan Company
Suppose you have a Government of Canada cheque worth $1,000.
It would cost you about $33 to cash it if the payday loan company charges you:
- 2.99% of the value of the cheque, plus
- $2.99 for each item you cash
This means that after fees, you’d only get about $967 instead of the full $1,000.
Before using a payday loan company or other cheque-cashing service to cash your Government of Canada cheque, make sure you understand all the conditions, including the fees that youll have to pay.
Endorse The Check To Someone Else
In the event you can’t cash your check by other methods, you may be able to have a friend or family member you trust deposit the check into their bank account. This is known as a special endorsement. In order to do this, you would first need to endorse the check to the person you want to deposit it.
On the back of a check is a line where you endorse it for deposit. Instead of simply signing it yourself, on this line you should write, “Pay to the order of: ” and your signature underneath. When your friend goes to deposit the check, he will endorse beneath your signature. Take note, not all financial institutions accept special endorsed checks, so review the bank’s policies or contact an agent for further assistance.

When A Bank Wont Cash Your Government Of Canada Cheque
A bank can refuse to cash a Government of Canada cheque for you if:
- there is evidence that the cheque has been altered in any way or is counterfeit
- the cheque is for more than $1,750
- it has reasonable grounds to believe that there has been illegal or fraudulent activity in relation to the cheque
If the bank wont cash your cheque, it must notify you with a written statement.
They must also disclose to you:
- their procedure for dealing with complaints
- the name of the external complaints body of which theyre a member and how to contact that ECB
- the Financial Consumer Agency of Canadas mailing address, website address and telephone number
If a bank wont cash your cheque and you feel you have been treated unfairly, you can file a complaint.
Endorse Your Check To A Friend Or Family Member
If you dont have a bank account of your own, then you could endorse the check to a friend or family member who does.
Endorsing a check is a simple two-step process:
- You write Pay to the order of
- Sign underneath
They can then cash the check for free and give the funds to you.
This obviously requires a deep level of trust and, in some cases, you both have to be present at the bank so they can prove that you are not being pressured or forced to do this. Youll likely be asked to fill out a form to certify your endorsement.
Depending on how often you need to cash a check, it may be much easier for you to open a checking account of your own and avoid this workaround. The last thing you want is for money to get in the way of your relationships with friends and family.

Information You Must Receive About Cheque Hold Periods
A federally regulated financial institution, such as a bank, must give you a written copy of its policy on cheque holds when you open an account. You can find the policy as part of your account agreement or as a separate document.
The cheque hold policy tells you how long the financial institution can hold the cheques that you deposit.
It must include information about:
- the maximum length of time it may hold funds for a cheque that is drawn on an account at a financial institution in Canada
- the maximum amount of time it may hold the funds you deposit from a cheque that isnt subject to the legislated maximum cheque hold periods
If the policy does not specify if a hold applies to your account, your financial institution decides when you deposit your cheque.
Do I Need An Id To Cash A Check
How to cash a check without ID:
- Deposit it into your account through an ATM at your bank
- Take advantage of ATM check cashing if your bank offers it
- Sign the check over to someone else
Most banks require your ID be presented before they cash a check, but theres no standard list for whats considered an acceptable form of ID. Check with your bank or the bank that issued the check to see if you have a document that theyll accept as ID.
As a last resort, you can sign the check over to someone you trust and ask them to cash it for you. This creates a third-party check. However, if you choose this option, keep in mind that many banks will require verification that original payee authorized the signing over of the check, by having the original payee present and presenting their ID. Apply For Educational Grants
College is expensive. We all know that. In fact, the 2017-18 school year saw tuition averages of almost $35,000 for private colleges and just under $10,000 for state colleges. Ouch.
If you want to further your education but cant afford the high costs of tuition, room, board, books, and more, an education grant might be a great option. The best and most broadly-offered funding source is the governments Federal Pell Grant. This awards as much as $5,920 to students each year that they qualify for need. And it doesnt need to be repaid .
In order to qualify, youll need to complete a FAFSA. You can view all of the details for the Pell Grant at ed.gov.
Beyond that, though, there are hundreds of excellent grants available to students based on interests, major or career sought, and even local areas. I was surprised to find that some organizations even offer grants to students who are left-handed!
You should, of course, shoot for the governments Pell Grant first. But then fill out as many grant applications as you can find from other organizations and companies. A great place to find them is the College Grants Database.
