Four Key Series 80 Parts Added
The Series 80 1911 added four parts to the Series 70, and that is what some folks complain about, adding four unnecessary parts. More places for dirt to accumulate, grease to impinge operation, parts to go wrong, general malfunctions and stoppages to occur, and parts to break or affect reliability. It seems most earlier failures of Series 80 systems occurred because someone had a mediocre or inferior trigger job done, installed an entirely new trigger with a close tolerance overtravel stop or added a new trigger incorrectly, or reinstalled the used or damaged Series 80 component parts, perhaps not optimally, appropriately, or correctly. So, perhaps the triggers effective stroke was shortened, or the spring-loaded plunger was not installed to properly lift enough to clear the pins path.

For some, the Colt 1911 Government in .45 ACP caliber is the pistol by definition.
For others, it is an object to own, appreciating the pistols fine craftsmanship, aesthetics or historical importance. The Series 80 1911 Pistol
So, what IS a series 80 1911 pistol?
The Series 80 is/was the term used to refer to a number of modifications made to the firing mechanism of the Colt 1911 pistol. These updates were added in 1983 and were dubbed the Series 80 since the previous revision to the base model gun was similarly dubbed the Series 70.
What were the differences between the Series 70 vs Series 80?
The base model pistol of the Series 80 also no longer had the arched mainspring housing that the M1911A1 and Series 70 pistols did. The first edition dropped in 1983, and a further revision occurred in 1988, when the collette bushing of the Series 70 was dropped in favor of the traditional solid bushing.
However, the chief modification was the addition of a firing pin block safety. On the Series 80, a pivoting link is actuated by the trigger pull, pushing the firing pin block up and unblocking the firing pin. Thus, the firing pin can only move IF the trigger is pulled.

Series 70 Vs Series 80
Most people think of the difference between a Series 70 and Series 80 1911 as being all about the safety. Its true that seems to be the most noteworthy change made but there was more.
Oh, and the Series 70 was not the original M1911 platform or the M1911A1 it was the result of decades of changes and improvements. The safety is the most commonly discussed and noteworthy change, though.
The Series 80 was created by changing the Series 1970 firing pin safety . Those changes meant the gun wouldnt fire until the trigger was completely pressed back.
This was accomplished by adding a firing pin block that could only be moved out of the way by the aforementioned trigger press.
Basically, when the trigger is pressed a slim metal lift in the frame of the Series 80 1911 raises up and presses a safety plunger located in the slide, deactivating the firing pin block and allowing the gun to fire.
The change was a good way to make the guns drop safe. So yes, changes were made to one of the safety mechanisms.
Side note: that does not mean a modern Series 70 is unsafe. There is a slim chance of a Series 70 1911 firing if it is dropped from a significant height, muzzle down, but that chance was/is more of an issue with steel firing pins.
To circumvent that youll find manufacturers making changes like using titanium firing pins in their Series 70 1911s.

On March 29, 1911, Lt. Col. John T. Thompson of the U.S. Ordnance Department sent a letter to Colts in Hartford, Connecticut. The purpose was to inform them that the military testing held at Springfield Armory just two weeks prior had concluded and John Moses Brownings 1911 design produced by Colt had come out on top.
Just like that, a legend was born. The M1911 served as the standard sidearm for American soldiers for the next 74 years.
In the decades following the guns rise to fame, dozens of companies have put their own spin on the platform, but theres an allure that still surrounds the pistols made by Colt.
The gun up for review is a newly-manufactured Colt 1911 Government Model. Plenty of reviews are done for 1911s from all kinds of manufacturers, but we dont seem to see as many honest-to-goodness Colts put through their paces.
Many a keystroke has been dedicated to the differences between the Colt Series 70 and Series 80 pistols. Ive shot both and like them both. While Colt has reintroduced the Series 70, the gun reviewed here is a Series 80 model, which has an MSRP that is $100 less than the Series 70.

You might have run across a magazine article, video or forum thread where people praise or complain about the Series 80 1911 pistol. What’s really common to run across is people complaining about the trigger.
What IS a Series 80, anyhow? Well, the Series 80 is a number of features added to the basic Colt pistol which were installed in the early 1980s, though not in the actual year 1980.
Are they as bad as everyone says? Not even close. Someone who says so is lying or doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
Series 70 Vs 80 The Difference Is More Than You Think
Series 70 vs 80, the difference is more than you think.
I see a lot of use and misuse of the terms Series 70 and Series 80 when talking about Government Model and Commander pistols so I thought I would lay it out for you all. Once again I am not trying to upset anyone but just providing some correct information for you to do as you will.
In 1970 Colt changed a few things on their Government Model denoting it as Series 70 by adding a collet barrel bushing and accursizer barrel. The theory behind that was to improve accuracy with a tighter fit barrel bushing to the barrels muzzle without having to hand fit a standard solid barrel bushing. Now this worked pretty well but on occasion one of the fingers of the collet barrel bushing could bend or break.
As for Commanders and OACP pistols, they have always used solid barrel bushings so there is no such thing as a Series 70 Commander or OACP. They have been offered with the Series 80 firing pin safety so you have the option of Pre-Series 70 or Series 80.
Colt did reintroduce the Series 70 pistol in 2001 and in 2002 introduced a stainless steel version, now original Series 70 Colts were never built with stainless steel and these new Series 70 reissue also incorporated a solid barrel bushing. Bear in mind these are not exact copies of the Series 70 but a reissue.
