Consider Angel Investors For Women

Targeted supports for women entrepreneurs – May 12, 2022

While angel investments arent grants, they can help get your business off the ground. According to Forbes, angel investors provide funding typically between $25,000 and $100,000 in exchange for equity.

There are several angel investing groups that specifically invest in women-led businesses. Belle Capital USA, for instance, invests in a number of women-led, high-growth companies.

Pipeline Angels is a group of women investors who back women-owned businesses. To date, its 400 members have provided over $6 million in funding.

Golden Seeds is another potential source of funding. If youre a female founder, check out this list of additional resources from 37 Angels.

Why Are Grants Important

The reality is that even the most innovative and well-thought-out business ideas wont come to fruition without adequate financial backing. Lack of capital can tank a start-up or prevent a sophomore business from taking off and expanding. Unfortunately, data indicates that women entrepreneurs may have difficulty qualifying for traditional small business loans, and when they do, the funding may be less generous than that received by others: according to Biz2Credits 2020 Women-Owned Business Study, the average amount of funding provided to women entrepreneurs is 33% less than what their non-women-owned business counterparts receive.

This is where grants come in. Instead of a traditional loan, which you have to pay back with interest, grants are more like gifts. If you qualify, you get the money and you dont have to pay it back. Grant funding can be a great opportunity for women who have challenges qualifying for traditional funding and equal opportunities to compete in the entrepreneurial playing field.

    Finding Federal And State Grants

Many business owners think that federal grants are just a click away. We have all seen the ads promoting free federal money to start businesses. But this is a huge misconception. While there are federal grants available in the areas of medical research, science, education and technology development, no such grants exist specifically for women-owned businesses. You may find grants that fund projects that empower women, but such funding is often set aside for nonprofit corporations, not for-profit businesses.

When researching grants specifically for a woman-owned business, start at the state level. Most states offer grants for women-owned businesses in some capacity. Each state website has a business section where you can find grant and funding opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses. A good example of this is the business section for the state of New York, which lists incentives and programs for businesses. Check out your state’s site to find out what is available for your business.

Small Business Grants For Women: Additional Options

Grants represent a viable form of free funding for select, exceptionally talented women business owners. If you can present an especially impressive application, essay, business plan, and in some cases an in-person pitch, you might come away with some free cash to help bring your entrepreneurial dreams to fruition.

However, such grants are highly competitive, and in most cases, even if you win a prized spot, you wont receive a large amount of capital. Some select grants are available to small businesses in general, including grants for startup businesses, but these grant programs are similarly competitive. Generally, there just isnt a lot of grant money to be had for for-profit businesses.

If you are looking at grants for women business owners because you dont qualify for a business loan, you might consider a business credit card that can cover some of your expenses. There are even business credit cards for bad credit and business credit cards for startups.

In the long run, improving your personal and business credit scores can help your woman-owned small business qualify for financing. Be sure to check out our blog post on how to improve your business credit score.

Although every small business grant is unique and has its own set of requirements, there are a few general steps you can follow to identify and apply for the grants that are most applicable to your business:

    • Do your research. Check out online portals like Grants.gov to identify grants that could be a good fit for your business. Attending small business conferences and chatting with peers in the industry can also be a great way to learn about small business grant opportunities that arent widely advertised.
    • Check your eligibility. Most grants have specific eligibility requirements. These rules can relate to demographic, education level, the age of your business, and other factors. Paying attention to these requirements could save you from spending time applying for a grant that might not be the right fit.

Although it can feel tough to find time to squeeze in applications, the payoff for winning financing for your startup can be huge. Make sure you apply on time to make your application stand out from the pack.
    • Track your applications. Creating a spreadsheet of the grants you have applied for and any upcoming deadlines is a great way to stay organized and motivated throughout the process.

Dont Miss Out On Grants Specifically For Women Entrepreneurs

Today, more women than ever are starting small businesses, and they need cash to get a firm footing in their industry. They may have set up the basics such as business insurance, tax filings, website and even a brick-and-mortar location, but to survive the rough first quarter, they’ll need money. Fortunately, there are foundations and other enterprises that give help to women-owned businesses.

The support for women entrepreneurs is not yet what it should be. Women are 5% less likely to get a conventional business loan from banks or government agencies such as the Small Business Administration .

Even if a woman does get a loan, it is usually a smaller amount than men get. This hinders the womans ability to get credit. It doesnt matter if women are less willing to take risks than men, or the fact that fewer women apply for business loans because the system is biased.

Read on to learn about the corporations and other lenders who understand the problems women entrepreneurs have and want to do something about it. You have a better chance of success with one of the following small business grants for women.
