Magic: The Gathering is practically its own currency at this point, with no shortage of rare and expensive cards out there to buy, sell and trade. Your old deck could be more valuable than you realise – or it could be full of Mudholes and goblins worth less than the box they’re kept in. There’s no way of knowing if you’ll find the most expensive magic card until you start looking around, especially considering that at the end of the day… well, it’s all just printed card.
And some MTG cards are ridiculously expensive, the kind of long-term investment that could justifiably be kept in an armoured vault with attack dogs waiting outside. Fingers crossed you find one of these in your attic here’s the most rare and expensive Magic: The Gathering cards of all time.
Chinese Government Stops Auction After Bids For Yu
At an auction in China, a bidder offered the incredible sum of $13.4 million for a rare Yu-Gi-Oh! card!

Chuzhou, China – Trading cards from games like Pokémon or Magic The Gathering have been considered a popular investment for several years now, sometimes selling for astronomical prices. But the latest offer for a single Yu-Gi-Oh! card was so extreme that a Chinese federal court intervened and shut down the auction.
As reported by The South China Morning Post, the incredible sum of $13.4 million was offered for a very limited “gold” edition of the “Blue-eyes White Dragon” at an auction in China!
As the cards for the franchise went beyond collecting and were used in actual strategy card games and tournaments, having a powerful Blue-Eyes White Dragon in your deck was more than handy. That particular dragon was central to the storyline of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TV series and the corresponding card proved a powerful weapon during gameplay.
According to the report, the card being auctioned was one of just 500 ever made out of real gold and was released in 2018 to mark the 20th anniversary of the trading card game.
Sold exclusively through the online shop of manufacturer Konami, the gold edition was predicted to sell for “only” up to $46,000.
The auction was held on an Alibaba-owned platform and the initial bid was set for just $15 as that was what the court estimated the value of the card to be.

The top five lots all MTG cards have a combined high estimate of $135,000. Tops among these: a Magic: The Gathering Beta Black Lotus card graded CGC 9 Mint.
This is certainly going to be an extravaganza for Magic: The Gathering collectors. This is one of the best collections to surface in a long time.

The card belonged to a young man named Zhang Yujie, who was serving life in prison for embezzling more than $10 million from the government. In China, the norm in such cases is to auction off the confiscated possessions of convicts.
The auction attracted a huge audience of bidders in a very short time, with some 18,000 people reportedly bidding, and two million watching as bidders drove the price to an unimaginable sum within a few minutes.
This although the authenticity of the card had never been verified!
A Chinese court finally pulled the emergency brake and stopped the auction. According to the Morning Post, the authorities of the People’s Republic suspected a “malicious bidding behavior”, warning punishment could come to those who were found guilty of messing with the procedure.
Incidentally, this wasn’t the only unusual item sold at the auction a PlayStation 4 adorned with gold and diamonds was also reportedly on offer. The court also suspended the auction of a USB drive suspected to hold the criminal’s Bitcoin when bids for it reached $77,000.

Sooo, I used to have a pretty nasty Magic habit, and a pretty poor executed habit at that. I was working at GameStop when I first started playing again for the first time . I was buying in small doses and Fatpacks because I loved the experience of playing a scratch off and still having something to show for it even if I didnt get a decent win. I loved building decks, but sooner or later I would dread reorganizing, fall out of playing with friends, or decide not to spend an hour driving to come to work sleep deprived for Midnight releases, plus lets be honest sometimes the smell at Magic events can be very strong and oh my god Ive had people cheat, flip tables and steal cards. Enter Arena, organization? Meh. Cheaters? Nope. Flipping tables? Maybe theirs but mine isnt flipping unless I chuck my phone or manhandle my monitor. Stealing cards? Yeah, okay. Smell? Maybe if Im on public transit or its the day after chili night at my house. My only gripe is multiplayer. I want to play two-headed giant, Wizards Tower, Commander, but this is a great one on one experience, and the season pass is so worth the cash, its also a great learning and experimentation tool for the formats provided. If you love strategy and deck building this is, in my opinion, one of the best games you can download to your phone.

This year’s Auction of the People had players desiging decks around a single letter. Any card legal in Online Extended was up for grabs, so long as any of the words in the card name started with the chosen letter. So “M” could get you Morality Shift, Mortal Combat, and Braids, Cabal Minion, but not Nantuko Shade. As always happens, the decks were of wildly fluctuating power levels.

The “O” deck is so good it feels like cheating. Starting off with Opposition and Static Orb, it draws ridiculous power from Fact “Or” Fiction, Roar “Of” the Wurm, Call “Of” the Herd and Birds “Of” Paradise. Also sought after would be the F deck, that gets Flametongue Kavu and Fact or Fiction. The beatdown decks would also see a lot of action, what with players starting at lower-than-average life totals.
The dance of the auction is an intricate one. The trade-off between life and cards is tricky to balance. Go too low on life and you can get randomly beaten out. Go too low on cards and face manascrew at every turn. That’s extra trouble when a lot of the decks up for grabs have awkward basic-land manabases. The other thing to bear in mind was how aggressively to bid. Fight too much too early and you wind up with a deck at unplayable starting conditions. Wait too long and you get stuck with one of the clunkers.

Magic: The Gathering Gamma Playtest Time Walk At Heritage Auctions
Nearly anyone who has heard of Magic: The Gathering has heard tales of the most valuable widely-released cards in existence: The Power Nine. These nine amazingly scarce, powerful cards are mana-efficient cards that can easily blow out a game. Six of them, one of which is the most expensive card in the history of the game, create mana. Two of them draw players’ cards. But one of them is a card that has an effect that has consistently stayed at higher rarities: Time Walk, with the ability to give a player an extra turn.
Heritage Auctions, an auction house based in Dallas, Texas that deals primarily with comics, video games, trading cards, and other collectible items, has recently acquired a fantastic find to put onto auction: a Gamma playtest Time Walk, from days long predating the initial Alpha release of Magic: The Gathering. Interested parties have until Saturday, July 24th at 12:50 PM Central Time to place a bid on this historic item.

With A Black Lotus Sold At $500k Magic: The Gathering Hits A New Level
An alpha Black Lotus, the most infamous Magic: The Gathering card ever produced, was sold at auction on eBay for $511,100. Organized by trading card investment firm PWCC, it’s the first single Magic CCG card to sell for over half a million dollars at open auction. Other collectible card game cards may have sold for more, usually unique single-printing cards, but if they did there’s no public record of it. Past Alpha Black Lotus cards have gone for as much as $250k.
To top it off, the case is signed by now-deceased Magic artist Christopher Rush, who painted the art for the card. Rush’s artwork set the tone for not just the first Magic set, but for the series as a whole. He died in 2016.
The Alpha series of Magic cards are the very first set ever printed, in 1993. It’s infamous as a powerful card, the most powerful in the first set of cards, and has been banned from play for years. Only 1,100 copies of the Alpha Black Lotus ever existed, with many lost to time or wear, and this one is of exceptional quality. It was graded a 10 by PSA, one of the most respected valuation services in collectible card games. The auctioneer, PWCC, said that the card was by all counts the single finest Alpha Black Lotus weve had the pleasure of brokering.”

Most Expensive Magic: The Gathering Cards
However, there are plenty of people who put big money into MTG, and its caused some spectacular prices throughout the years thanks to things like the Reserved List. The Reserved List, for those not in the know, is a list of cards that can never be reprinted. Its purpose is to keep the value of certain cards from dropping, but what its actually done is caused certain formats to be completely inaccessible to all but the most trust-fundy of people.
That being said, it is fun to marvel at just how expensive MTG cards can become, so we thought wed take a look at the most valuable cards in Magic: The Gathering.
Now, there are rules here. First of all, all of the prices are as listed on MTGGoldfish for a consistent comparison. Secondly, were talking about the most expensive these cards have been on the site. That means weve got a look back at the most expensive cards, rather than attempting to nail down any kind of finances in the current market.
Thankfully, this leaves us with some all-time classic cards, so its likely to be true several years from now – even if the prices themselves change, the content should be accurate. Now then, without any more ado, onto the list.

Excellent Way To Play
Ive loved magic since high school and played paper for quite a while. Ive played several games developed for phone and console . This in my opinion is the best . I suggest the game to anyone looking to play, for their first time or a veteran. It is very helpful for new players breaking down the phases and when things can be done that you might not realize if your new. Ive played well over 2k matches . It is a daily thing for me , playing matches , making decks , improving on decks and new strategies I enjoy so much I often fall asleep making a deck . The game is not bogged down with adds , or useless player info , their is no way to communicate with another player which is probably a good thing , other than emotes. Anyways I would definitely recommend to anyone old or new looking to get back into magic . The only things I find a bit buggy in the game or that I in general dont like is Their is a cap limit on creatures .. Ive had games where I should have had well over a thousand creatures and it limits it and crashes , sometimes it will freeze and force close very seldom , sometimes it will bug and a card that you were about to play will stay big and not get out of blocking your view . Other than that the game functions well I enjoy it , making decks is not inherently difficult to navigate or figure out how to find what your looking for . Thank you wizards and all the developers .
