Military/ Govt Rates At Major Hotels
We are all familiar with getting the military/ federal government rates at most hotels when traveling TDY. Did you know that most of the major chains will also give you those rates when you are on vacation with your family? You should check both ways, regular rates and Govt rates, as I have often found that empty hotels will offer rooms at below Govt rates. Govt rates are particularly good in high cost areas. However, just like cheap airline seats, once a hotel sells however many rooms they set aside for that rate, it will become unavailable. The rule here is book early, you can always cancel and rebook as long as it is not at the last minute.

Explore Museums And Attractions For Free
Museums from coast to coast offer free or discounted admission to school employees living in-state or in neighboring states. For example, Illinois K-12 teachers can get free admission to Chicagos Field Museum of Natural History. New England K-12 teachers and some administrators are eligible for a free two-year educators pass to Bostons renowned New England Aquarium, and a free yearlong educators pass to the Kennedy Space Center is available to K-12 teachers from Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Take Advantage Of Student Discounts
Several student-oriented travel discount programs are also open to school employees. The Student Universe website extends its discounted airfare, hotel and tour rates to teachers and college or university faculty, and theres no membership fee.
The Student Advantage Card caters to college students and faculty only. Partnering with national brands, it allows members to save when buying must-have items such as textbooks and laptops, and makes discounts available on hotels and car rentals. Membership starts at $30 per year.
The International Student Exchange Card is a great fallback to have when youre abroad. In addition to discounts in select countries, its Worldwide Assistance provides help to students and faculty with lost passports, travel documents, legal problems and even emergency cash.

Government Rates For Leisure Travel Hotel Policies Vary
Federal employees traveling on business can book hotels at discounted rates negotiated by the government, but do the rules apply for personal trips? According to Viki Reath, spokeswoman for the U.S. General Services Administration, that’s easy: “It is strictly a business decision of the lodging establishment as to whether or not they will extend the government per diem rate to employees traveling on personal business.”
Getting a firm answer on actual hotel policies was a bit trickier one reservations agent at the Sheraton Manhattan told us it was against the law to book government rates for personal time. When we called back, a customer service agent said, “As long as you have ID, I don’t think going to trouble you about whether you’re on business or pleasure.” Starwood spokeswoman Nadine Ayala said the company, which operates Sheraton, was “looking into our policy.”
Offering the per diem rates is “a hotel-by-hotel decision,” said Kathy Shepard, vice president for corporate communications at Hilton Hotels. “If we’re able to offer the government rate, the truth of the matter is that we don’t care whether people are on business or leisure travel.”
Marriott’s policy, said director of media relations John Wolf, is also to let the individual hotels decide.

Booking A Government Rate At Hotels
When you book a stay at most major hotel chains, including Hilton, IHG, , and Starwood, there are usually multiple room rates available to choose from. For example, you might see:
- AAA
- Reward night
Theres nothing to prevent you from comparing prices across the different rate categories. In fact, you might be able to book any of the discounted rates, even if you dont qualify.
But at check-in, youll likely be required to provide proof of your membership or employment status to get the discount.
For example, I made a test booking at a Starwood hotel using the government rate. And at the payment page, it says Ill be required to provide ID when I check-in to the hotel.
But some hotels dont ask for an ID when you check-in. This means you can potentially get a cheap hotel stay by booking the government employee rate.
I checked the cost of a night at the Four Points by Sheraton Los Angeles Westside. The government employee rate is ~$100, or 45% cheaper than the price for loyalty members, seniors, and AAA members.
Keep in mind, the discount can vary depending on the hotel. And most hotels have a limited number of rooms available at a special rate for government employees. So some nights the government rate can be the same or more expensive than the rate for loyalty members.
Thats why I would NOT recommend booking the government employee rate if youre not eligible. The potential savings is not worth the risk!
