What Is The Unique Entity Id

The federal government uses a unique identifier for each entity that does business with the federal government. For more than two decades, Dun & Bradstreets Data Universal Numbering System has served as the unique entity ID. That ends on April 4, 2022 when the federal government completes the transition to the new UEI that is issued within the System for Award Management .

Today: The DUNS Number is the authoritative unique entity identifier used by the federal government.

  • The DUNS Number is a 9-character numeric value.
  • DUNS Numbers are issued by a third party, Dun & Bradstreet .
  • There is no fee to obtain a DUNS Number.

Starting April 4, 2022: A UEI issued through SAM, referred to as the Unique Entity ID , will be the authoritative unique entity identifier used by the federal government.

  • The Unique Entity ID is a 12-character alphanumeric value.
  • The Unique Entity ID is issued by the government as part of the SAM registration process.
  • There is no fee to obtain a Unique Entity ID .

The DUNS Number will remain the authoritative identifier until 4/3/2022.

Why Is The Duns Number Being Replaced As The Uei

  • DUNS Numbers are provided through a private company, Dun & Bradstreet. In order to obtain a DUNS number, companies must go through D& Bs website prior to registering on SAM.
  • Eliminating the third party website from the process, makes it easier for companies to register in SAM and update their registration.
  • Starting April 4th, you can complete the SAM registration process or update your registration record entirely within SAM.gov. You will no longer need to visit a third party website to obtain your UEI or update your company name or address in SAM.
  • While GSA is still using a third party to complete the validation process, the SAM-generated UEI allows GSA to re-compete the contract in the future without disrupting the UEI moving forward.

The DUNS Number was created by our exclusive partner Dun & Bradstreet in the 1960s. The DUNS Number, or Data Universal Numbering System, has become the worldwide reference for identifying companies, as can be the SIREN/SIRET for France, and constitutes the pivotal data for their credit evaluation activity. Unique Entity Id Replaces Duns Numbers In Samgov

WHAT: The U.S. General Services Administration has officially transitioned the System for Award Management to no longer use data universal numbering system numbers from Dun & Bradstreet , and now will use government-issued Unique Entity IDs.

WHEN: GSA implemented the change effective April 4, 2022.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR INDUSTRY: For now, most government contractors and their SAM.gov entity administrators do not need to do anything to make the change from DUNS number to automatically assigned Unique Entity ID until it is time to renew their SAM registration. If the contractor needs to know its new ID, it can find it on its SAM.gov profile. Entity administrators can also log into SAM.gov and visit their Workspace to find the IDs under their administration, which is necessary if the company opted to make its registration non-public. New entities will be automatically assigned an ID.

DUNS numbers are not going away entirely just yet. Although SAM.gov will no longer use DUNS, other government databases still refer to DUNS, and your teaming partners may be slower to transition to the new ID .

After requesting a D-U-N-S Number, please allow up to 5 business days to receive your number from D& B. Expediting your D-U-N-S Number creation process will not shorten this waiting period. If your application has taken longer than two weeks to process, please email D& B.

Once you receive your D-U-N-S Number, please allow up to 2 business days for Apple to receive your information from D& B. After this period, you may enroll as a company/organization in the Apple Developer Program.

To update your D& B profile, email D& B. Please note that it takes up to two business days for D& B to provide updated information to Apple.

What Is The Process To Getting Unique Entity Id After April 4th And How Long Will It Take

  • Starting April 4th, you must request a Unique Entity ID in SAM.
  • To start the process, youll enter you legal company or entity name and address.
  • A validation service will display potential matches.
  • If you confirm a match, the validation is considered successful and youll receive your Unique Entity ID immediately. Note: if you go on to complete the full entity registration process, it will take up to 10 business days to complete.
  • If you cannot confirm a match, even after editing your legal name and address, youll need to contact the Federal Service Desk.

When Should I Get A Duns Number

Clients often ask us, “What can I do to financially strengthen my business?” When a business first gets started, it does not have good credit. It does not have bad credit either. So what can you do to add trust to your business that has no past credit history?

With competition in the business world comes the need to adapt, and set your company apart. Getting a DUNS number for your company may be the right move for you to accomplish this. Cynthia Rios with the Minority Business Development Agency provides information on the steps an organization must take to register to apply for the MBDA Business Center grant.

All grant applications must be submitted to MBDA electronically through Grants.gov, the federal governments storehouse for information and access to the thousands of federal grant programs and opportunities.

Before you can submit a grant application to operate an MBDA Business Center through Grants.gov, you must register with three different entities.

These three different entities are Dun and Bradstreet, the Central Contractor Registry and Grants.gov.

The Dun and Bradstreet number is used as the best way for the federal government to identify and track organizations and companies that receive grants through federal government programs.

If you do not have a Dun and Bradstreet number, the CFO, grant administrator or authorizing official at your organization will need to register by either visiting the Dun and Bradstreet website or by calling the Dun and Bradstreet Government Customer Response Center at 1-866-705-5711.

Generally, if requested over the phone, a D& B number is provided immediately. Online requests typically take 1-2 business days.
