There are many upsides to a government contracting career if you are willing to know the rules and accept the differences from the private sector.

Private Military Contracting, in general, has gotten a pretty bad rap over the years.

They often get labeled as mercenaries, however, that is not always the most appropriate or accurate description.

As a matter of fact, I personally wouldnt call it an accurate description at all.

In fact, there are a lot of military contracting jobs that dont involve carrying a gun at all.

Some of the most well-known companies that employ private military contractors include:

  • G4S
  • Triple Canopy

There are literally dozens of others, but those are the bigger, more well-known ones.

These companies operate both domestically and overseas, often in hot spots like Afghanistan, Africa, and even Europe.

While a good chunk of these companies require previous military experience, many require no experience at all.

When you think static security, think of a guy manning a tower.

These can include things like:

  • Dams and bridges
  • Construction sites

Choose A Business Name

How to Become an Independent Contractor

It’s a good idea to choose a business name that you can use on your invoices and business cards. Using a business name rather than your own name appears more professional.

Depending on the name you choose, you may have to register it with the government. Any business that doesn’t use the legal name of its owner as part of its business name must register the name as a fictitious business name . This allows customers to easily contact the business owner with a complaint or to take legal action against the business. For example, Madeline Quinn names her consulting business “Madeline Consulting.” Because the business name doesn’t include her full name, Madeline must register it as a fictitious business name.

There are other reasons to register your business name. First, you won’t be able to enforce any contract that you sign under an unregistered name. Second, many banks won’t open an account under your business name unless you provide proof that you have properly registered the name.

How To Write An Effective Government Contract Bid

Drafting a proposal for a potential government contract is just the start of the bidding process. But it can have you look at a blank screen for hours, especially if you have no idea where to begin. To jumpstart your journey to writing an impressive bid proposal, here are some of the things you have to take note of:

1. Read and re-read the solicitation document

It pays to be detail-oriented in this line of work. If you miss even one detail about the governments solicitation, your bid will be deemed non-responsive. To avoid this, you should carefully review the entire solicitation, its detailed requirements, and most importantly, understand the contract regulations. If some things arent clear with you, never hesitate to contact the procurement contracting officer to ask questions.

2. Align your proposal with the governments specified needs

Although government contract bid templates may be available on the internet, you should not entirely depend on them. To write an effective bid proposal, you should write your bid around the governments specific needs and how your business can help them out. This will show that you took the necessary effort to fully understand their requirements and plan your businesss course of action.

3. Highlight how your company can deliver the best solution

Telling your businesss compelling history can be an excellent way to start your proposal, but you shouldnt dwell too much on it. A concise paragraph will suffice for that.

By Stephen Fishman, J.D.

Many independent contractors start earning money without really planning on it. Before they know it, their sideline projects have become legitimate businesses — which means that they have to fulfill some basic business start-up requirements. Whenever you provide services and get paid, you must comply with several government rules, even if you work only a few hours per week.

At a minimum, do these four things when you’re first starting out as an independent contractor:

  • Make sure you really qualify as an independent contractor
  • Choose a business name .
  • Get a tax registration certificate .
  • Pay estimated taxes .

It is going to take you 6 months to a year to complete the process.

Becoming A Federal Background Investigator

Actively Retired? Wanna Be? to read the article.

The information in this article is general in presentation, as some federal agencies may have other, agency specific, requirements for background investigators.

Federally Credentialed Background Investigators conduct detailed, highly structured background investigations on:

  • Individuals applying for federal employment.
  • Individuals who require a security clearance.
  • Individuals who possess a security clearance but require a re-investigation at intervals of either 5 or 10 years depending on the clearance level.
  • There are 4 types of Background Investigators:

  • Government employed investigators.
  • Contract Investigators directly contracted with a federal agency.
  • Contract Investigators sub-contracted with a primary contract company which is directly contracted with an agency.
  • Employee Investigators , employed by a contract company which is directly contracted with an agency.

    What If You Lose

If you didnt win the contract, ask for a debriefing to find out how you were evaluated. If you want to challenge the award decision, you can file whats called a bid protest, but you have to act fast. Typically, bid protests must be filed within 10 days of the when the basis of protest is known .

When you are the protestor, you are really trying to throw as much mud at the wall and see what sticks, but your arguments can be dismissed if theyre late or not supported by facts, said Overman. You can come up with arguments of why you were evaluated improperly or why the awardee was given too good of an evaluation, like theres no way that price makes sense or that company has an organizational conflict of interest.

Although filing a bid protest is well within your rights as a citizen, Harary said to use it carefully. It should really be a last resort, because youll be making the procurement officer do extra work and you dont want to be someone that is just a complainer, he said.

Biggs also warned that even if your bid protest is successful, it doesnt necessarily mean youll be awarded the contract. It could just mean the agency did something incorrect when they were making the decision and they may have to go back and do a re-evaluation or fix whatever it was thats wrong, she said. In some cases, businesses will be allowed to re-bid on the contract.

How To Work Out Your Hourly Rate

Its easier to settle on your rate when you have been contracting for a while and have a better feel for the market. If youre starting out, a good method is to take the rate you would earn from a similar salaried job and add at least 20 per cent, eg:

    • $50 per hour salaried rate
    • + 20 per cent
    • = $60 per hour contract rate

The increase covers things an employer would pay for if you had a salaried job, eg:

    • annual leave
    • public holidays
    • ACC
    • Expenses such as business bank account and credit card charges, paper, printer ink, data plans and IT security costs.

There are other costs you should factor into your contract rate, including:

    • new equipment
    • any regular repayments or interest costs if you borrow money to buy new equipment
    • an allowance for repairs and servicing
    • fees and levies for things like annual licensing or registration
    • insurance for assets and equipment
    • public liability and professional indemnity insurance

If youre offered a contract rate, for example a rate per day, or to cover a route or territory ask questions so you know exactly what youre getting into. Such as:
