Contrary to bogus advertising, the U.S. government does not offer “free or cheap” land to the public. However, the Bureau of Land Management , an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, does occasionally sells parcels of publicly-owned land under certain conditions.
The federal government has two major categories which it makes land available for sale to the public: real property and public land.
- Real Property is primarily developed land with buildings, usually acquired by the federal government for specific purposes, such as military bases or office buildings. Persons interested in buying real property should contact the General Services Administration , which is the federal agency responsible for selling developed surplus property.
- Public Land is undeveloped land with no improvements, usually part of the original public domain established during the western expansion of the United States. Most of this land is in the 11 Western States and Alaska, although some scattered parcels are in the East.
Government Owned Land And Buildings Earmarked For Sale Better Repurposed For Much Needed Social And Affordable Homes: New Report
Peak housing and homelessness body Shelter WA has identified thirty government owned land and buildings for sale that could be used towards helping solve the affordable housing shortage.
Using publicly available data, Shelter WA has identified thirty government owned land assets and buildings currently listed or earmarked for sale, with a developable area of at least 62 hectares.
If these sites were developed with a 20% affordable rental and 20% social housing target, this would generate 864 new social and rental homes.
Ms Mackenzie said.
Sites include the Swan Districts Hospital, a former primary school in Carnarvon, an apartment block in Kununurra, the old licensing centre in Welshpool, the former TAFE campus in South Hedland, the iconic McCall building, a former Childrens home in Cottesloe, and fifteen separate parcels of land.
These buildings and land could be better repurposed as much needed social and affordable rental housing. A lot of these sites are in areas with high levels of homelessness and rental stress in Perth and the regions. Shelter WA CEO Michelle Mackenzie said.
Using innovative fast build technologies like prefabricated construction or retrofitting and refurbishing empty buildings, homes could be brought to market in significantly less time and cost than traditional housing builds, and could also get around the current construction and tradie challenges. Ms Mackenzie said.

Tips For Participating In Government Auctions
The general rule for auctions is that the highest bidder wins, and cancellation is not possible. Check with the auction site ahead of time to find out if you can cancel a bid.
Each auction website operates differently. In some cases, the government agency itself runs the auctions. In other cases, the agency operates the shopping site, but a third-party company handles the auction itself.
Find out what forms of payment auctions accept. There is no uniform payment policy across all the different auctions. Some auctions accept credit card payments or personal checks. Others, such as the Internal Revenue Service , don’t accept either of these. Most auctions accept cashier’s checks.
For real estate auctions, you may need to work with a broker or real estate agent to bid or make the purchase. Also, for real estate auctions, find out if financing is permitted. Many times it is not and the full purchase price is due when you win the bid.
Does The Provincial Government Want To Buy My Land
If you think your land may be of interest to Government, you can submit a proposal to the Department of Transportation Infrastructure & Energy, Properties Section. A committee will review your proposal. If it determines there is provincial interest in purchasing the land, negotiations will commence.
Your submission should include clear information to identify the property including the:
- Parcel number
- Legal name of the property owner and contact information.

What Is Required To Purchase Surplus Land Or Buildings
As the successful bidder/proponent in the purchase of provincially owned assets you are required to:
- Submit completed tender or RFP forms by the specified time and date
- Provide 15 per cent of purchase price deposit
- Take responsibility for your own legal fees and understand that Government does not certify title to property or certify property boundaries and
- Comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal statutes, regulations, orders or bylaws.
Sale To Lessee Information
- A request to purchase your lease can occur at any time. If you wish to purchase your leased agricultural Crown land, submit your application to the nearest Ministry of Agriculture Regional Office to determine saleability.
Who can apply
- Lessees with a long-term agricultural lease can apply to purchase some or all of the land they lease.
- Some conditions may prevent the land from being eligible for sale. Contact your local Regional Office to determine if your land is eligible for sale.
When to apply
- Lessees can apply to purchase their leased land at any time.

What About Land In Alaska
While many people are interested in buying public land for homesteading in Alaska, the BLM advises that due to existing land entitlements to the State of Alaska and to Alaska Natives, no BLM public land sales will be conducted in Alaska for the foreseeable future.
Homesteading in Alaska, as well as throughout the entire United States officially ended on October 21, 1976, with the passage of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976. In Alaska, however, a 10-year extension was allowed since it had only recently become a state and still had very few settlers. After October 20, 1986, now new homesteading was allowed on federally owned land in Alaska.
The last homesteader in the entire nation to receive a homestead requiring cultivation of the land was Kenneth W. Deardorff, who received a homestead patent on May 5, 1988, to 49.97 acres of land on the Stony River near Lime Village in southwestern Alaska.
Alaska represents the final chapter in the American Homestead Era that began in 1862, five years before Alaska even became a territory of the United States. Nationwide, over 1.6 million homesteads were granted in 30 states, helping hundreds of thousands of families reap a rich economic harvest through receiving free federal land as homesteads.

Sales Status As Of October 4 :
- Vacant agricultural Crown land that is eligible for sale is available for purchase on the McDougall Auctioneers Ltd. website.
- The next online auction is planned for October 19, 2021.
- Any Crown land that does not sell in the main auction will be listed for sale in a secondary auction immediately following the main auction. Secondary auction information will be listed on McDougall’s website. Following the secondary auction, unsold land will be available in the eCatalogue sale on a first come, first serve basis.

Because of the significance of parks to community values, elector approval is required for disposal of parklands or the removal of a park dedication.
Sewer, water and other utility systems are core local government assets with high visibility and strong community interest. Councils and boards can only dispose of these systems where there is assent of the electors and where an agreement is in place to ensure that the water or sewer service is continued.

An agency submits a request for the item in GSAXcess® once an it finds the property it needs. GSAXcess® will then notify the local GSA Area Property Officer of the request for the property. GSA generally approves transfers on a first-come, first-served basis. The local Personal Property Management Office can assist in manually coordinating the transfer if property is not made available on GSAXcess®.
Note: Acquiring federal agencies do not typically pay for excess personal property. However, they are responsible for any packing, shipping, and transportation costs.

Do You Donate Properties To Non
No. The County is prohibited from granting any donation or gratuity regardless of the worthiness of the purpose or the recipient. Where the public receives no substantial benefit, the donation or free use of county-owned property violates this constitutional prohibition.
According to State law and the Real Property Disposition Policy of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, the price of each property is based on its fair market value, which is determined by a qualified appraisal. Neither State Law nor County policy set out an exception for non-profit buyers.

There Is No ‘free’ Government Land
Public lands are sold at not less than fair market value as determined by a federal appraisal. Considerations such as legal and physical access, the highest and best use of the property, comparable sales in the area, and the availability of water all affect the land value. There are no “free” lands.By law, BLM must have the property to be sold appraised by a qualified appraiser to determine the current market value of the property. The appraisal must then be reviewed and approved by the Department of Interior’s Appraisal Services Directorate. The minimum acceptable bid amount for a parcel of land will be established by the Federal appraisal.
Public Or Direct Offers To Sell
Local governments may choose to dispose of land by public offer or by direct offer to a single person or organization. However, offers to sell are governed differently for regional districts and municipalities.
Regional District Offers to Sell
Regional districts are required to make land and improvements available for purchase by the public unless certain potential buyers exist.
Municipality Offers to Sell
Municipal councils may sell land and improvements without a public offer. They may want to create policy to guide those choices. For example, they may offer all property for sale by public offer unless there are strong identifiable reasons to make an exception. Council may decide a direct offer is appropriate when:
- Selling a closed road to an adjacent property owner
- Leasing land as part of a private-public partnership
- Selling land to the regional district for the regional water supply service
- Exchanging land as a component of a comprehensive urban redevelopment project
- Leasing land under an agreement with a non-profit housing provider to develop affordable housing

Conduct An Internal Screening
Any office within a federal agency that has unneeded property must screen the property for other offices within the agency. Once the agency has determined that no other office in the agency needs the property, the property is declared as “excess” to the agency’s need and can be reported to GSA for transfer to other agencies or donation to state or local organizations.
Can You Just Buy A Small Home Site
Many people are looking for small lots or parcels suitable for building a single home. While the BLM does occasionally sell small parcels suitable as home sites, the agency will not subdivide parcels of public land in order to facilitate a prospective buyers wish to acquire a home site. BLM determines the sizes and configuration of parcels for sale based on factors such as existing land ownership patterns, marketability, and costs of processing.

Who Can Buy Public Land
According to the BLM purchasers of public land must be:
- United States citizens 18 years of age or older
- corporations subject to the laws of the United States or of any state
- a U.S. state, state organization, or state political subdivision authorized to hold title or property or
- entities capable of conveying and holding lands or interests therein under state law.
Some federal employees are prohibited from buying public land and all buyers are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility and may be required to submit articles of incorporation or other documentation.
