Private And Government Home Improvement Grants
Many Americans find themselves requiring home improvements at some point in their life. This might mean modifying the home to improve accessibility or to adapt to the needs of senior citizens, or it can mean making improvements to the homes energy efficiency to reduce bills and protect the environment. Regardless of the reasons these home modifications are needed, it goes without saying that making improvements to the home can be expensive.
Here are the costs of some common home repairs:
- Boiler repairs: $350 for repairs, $4,000 for replacements
- Furnace repairs: $267 for repairs, $4,376 for replacements
- Garage door repairs: $210 for repairs, up to $1,500 for replacements
- Roof repairs: $653 for repairs, $6,626 for replacements
- Window replacements: $248 per pane
For seniors and disabled persons, home modifications can sometimes be even more expensive. Many require additions to the home, such as chairlifts, stairwell handrails, and wheelchair ramps, which can end up costing thousands of dollars to install.

Getting A Disabled Facilities Grant If You Live In Rented Accommodation
If you rent your home and apply to your local authority for a disabled facilities grant, you’ll need to get your landlord’s permission before your local authority will agree to help you. However, your landlord must not refuse permission without a very good reason. If you need to make changes to your home because of your disability, your landlord should agree to this unless they have a good reason for not doing so. If your landlord doesn’t agree, this could be disability discrimination and they could be breaking the law. This rule doesn’t apply in some cases where the landlord lives in the same property as you.
If you need to make certain changes to your home because of your disability, your landlord might be responsible for making them. This rule doesn’t apply in some cases where the landlord lives in the same property as you.
For more information about a landlord’s duty to make alterations for disabled people, see Discrimination in housing.
If your home is in need of repair, your landlord might also be responsible for doing them.

How Do I Apply For A Home Improvement Grant
There are a variety of home improvement grants available, and the best place to look depends on the type of grant youre looking for. Unfortunately, there isnt one central location where you can find them all.
The National Residential Improvement Association has a form on its website where you can find programs you may be eligible for. You can also visit the websites for the Department of Agriculture, Department of Veterans Affairs, or Department of Housing and Urban Development to see if you are eligible for their programs.
The best place to start looking is local, starting with your city, county, or state Housing and Urban Development , said Nicole Christopherson, real estate broker at NMC Realty. HUD offers grants like the HOME Investment Partnerships Program for low-income homeowners, as well as various types of home repair loans. The National Residential Improvement Association is also an excellent resource to help grant seekers find the best program/grant to fit their needs.
Finally, you can also research city, county, or state-sponsored grants.
What Problems Are Solved With Homeowner Renovation Assistance
Government funded renovation programs help to reduce the negative effects of home deterioration. In many cases, unless something is done the deterioration of a single home can affect an entire neighborhood. Specially targeted programs can help to preserve and revitalize neighborhoods. A renovation assistance program can also be used by a community to achieve its individual goals. Every community has its own goals and they may not always be the same as the goals for the state and county governments.

Government Grants For Renovating A Home
Because the government has a vested interest in making sure that all residential properties remain structurally sound and safe, it provides many avenues through which public money can travel to homeowners for the purpose of home renovations. Some of these grant programs are funded at the federal level but administered through state or local governmental agencies in every state. Californians looking to repair various systems in their home, or even those homeowners who want to try and add a little property value, may be able to benefit from some publicly funded grant or loan programs.
Electrical Lighting And Smart Home Technology
At the most basic level, make sure all electrical controls are as accessible to users as possible. This may mean finding controls that do not require fine manual dexterity to operate. Be sure to consider all light switches, thermostat controls, electrical outlets, and anything plugged into the outlets.
Perhaps less obvious than the locations of switches, but still important, is the location and angle of the lighting itself. Light locations, angles and reflections that work well for some, may shine directly into the faces of others, so in cases like these, you may need to redirect lighting, or even change out fixtures. Also, for ceiling fans, consider installing longer chains or purchasing a unit with a remote.
While these are the traditional concerns of remodeling, homeowners also have many options to incorporate new technology. Smart home technology focuses on automation, controlled wirelessly by smartphones, tablets, motion sensors, or voice activation. 26 Smart home tech can include Bluetooth and wifi enabled systems, such as lighting, thermometers, and door locks.

Government Programs That Pay You To Renovate Your Home
For all of us, our home is a personal sanctuary to come back to at the end of the day. While there is no formula for a perfect home, it is safe to say that it is one that caters to the practical and emotional needs of its members. Yet, over time, your perfect home may lose its aesthetic and functional appeal and may need to be remodeled.
You dont have to do the guesswork or read an Interior Design magazine to figure out when you should remodel your kitchen, bathroom or any other part of your house. If your appliances are slow and take forever to accomplish one task, wall paint is chipping, countertop and cabinets are shabby-looking, ventilation and plumbing seem inadequate all these are signs that you should remodel your home.
After: Smart Programmable Thermostat
If you’re looking for a quick remodel idea that you can accomplish in less than an hour, install a programmable thermostat. These digital smart thermostats can be programmed to turn your heating or cooling system on or off at specific times throughout the day and night. Most have a holiday mode, which allows you to reduce the need for the HVAC system during long periods of absence.
This living room had so many issues that design blogger Kris barely knew where to start. The lurid red felt imposing and the ceiling seemed too low. Everything was disorganized and in need of a serious update.

Two important remodeling ideas are at play in this living room. First, the owner imposed clean, grid-like lines on the accent wall, so that everything works off of straight horizontals and verticals. The grid implies order and organization. Second, by painting over that red wall color to match the ceiling color, the eye is now encouraged to view the room as higher than it really is. Eliminating these horizon lines is a surefire way to promote height visuals. The light is a Ganador 9-Light Shaded Chandelier.
