The States’ Role In Mental Health

Mental health: calls for more support for university students, as ...

States have significant power in making decisions about their mental health systems so mental health regulations and available services can look very different from state to state and even from county to county. State mental health systems must meet certain standards set by the federal government, but they are free to expand beyond what exists at the federal level and improve services, access, and protections for consumers. This freedom to experiment with new or innovative services and delivery models allows states to create improvements that can ultimately be translated across the country.

    What You Can Do

So now that you know more about public assistance, you can take steps to make a difference rather than just making assumptions about the people who receive assistance.

If you have the ability, offer them a job with decent pay and benefits. Offer them something that pays more than the assistance program pays. Why would anyone go and work forty hours a week for less than they make more money on assistance? Would you do that?

Dont stigmatize them for being on assistance. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports we can help eliminate mental health stigmas by educating ourselves. We can also start talking about the subject more rather than keeping it hush-hush. Show empathy and compassion and remember that people with mental illness are people first, then all of their other components.

Help them get treatment for their mental health disorder so they feel like going back to work. You can help them by talking to them kindly about what you see and feel regarding their situation. Stand beside them as they walk through this journey.

There are bad seeds in every program. This is true for any type of program out there, not just assistance programs. There are bad priests in the Catholic Church, pilots who drink before flying, teachers who have sex with students and even wives who murder their husbands. Does this mean all priests, pilots, teachers and wives are evil? No, of course not. The same goes for people utilizing the public assistance system.

How The Government Can Help People With Mental Health Issues

The government can help people with mental health issues. I am on Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income and run a small freelance writing business . Until recently, I could not get insurance because of my schizophrenia being a pre-existing condition, which forced me to stay on disability so I could get Medicare and Medicaid so I wouldn’t be wiped out again if I were hospitalized. This meant I had to watch my income. So I have plenty of ideas about how the government can help people with mental health issues.

The Government Can Help People With Mental Health Issues By Creating A Way To Come Off Disability

Video: Coronavirus: NSW government announces mental health package

I love my job. I would also like for my income to be higher than it is and take on more work. But as it is, if I make above a certain amount , I risk losing my benefits, including medical coverage for treatment that costs a couple grand a month. Do the math. I’ve already been wiped out by being hospitalized without insurance once and don’t want it to happen again. So I stay on disability as a safety net, and the system perpetuates itself.

My right-wing conservative father used to believe several myths about disability until I went on it and he saw for himself what it entails. “It’s perpetuating,” he said. “You have an $800 car that doesn’t run, so you can’t work, and you can’t get a better car because you’ll lose your benefits.”

Dad’s right–the system prevents you from coming off it. There needs to be a way to come off disability if we start recovering.

This is where the government can help people with mental health illnesses with the Affordable Care Act, as well as legislation mandating mental health parity. I need insurance that covers my pre-existing condition and insurance that treats mental illness like any other disability. I need to be allowed to work without fear of losing medical coverage–the wage limit needs to be raised from $900 a month, and the asset limit needs to be raised as well .

    What Is Mental Illness

Mental illness is a general term for types of mental health challenges that affect thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and your ability to function in daily life. People facing one of these challenges feel distressed regularly and may not feel in control of their life.

Mental illness is not the same as feeling sad, unhappy or stressed because of difficult situations like job loss or a breakup. Although, major life events like these and others can contribute to mental illness. For example, someone dealing with cancer could develop depression. Or someone facing discrimination could develop post-traumatic stress disorder.
