Use Your Emergency Fund
One of the best things you can do is build an emergency fund so you have cash readily available in case of an emergency home repair. Dipping into your emergency fund can prevent you from going into debt for home repairs and other costs. Its a good idea to have a plan to pay yourself back by adding more money into the emergency fund once your immediate need is addressed.
You can also start a home repair emergency fund designated specifically for home maintenance. Set aside a certain amount each month in a high-yield savings account and earmark it specifically for repairs. Later, when the inevitable emergency home repair comes up, you can cover the cost with money saved for that purpose.

Tips For Applying To The Ontario Renovates Program
Here are a few tips that can help you have a better chance at a successful application process.
- Apply on Time: Apply on Time: With most local governments, applications begin in the spring time of the calendar year. Its possible that your local Ontario Renovates program will only accept applications for a few weeks each year, because it commits all of its funds in a short amount of time. Once the funds are depleted for the year, the applications process ends. This means its important to apply as close to the date the program opens in the calendar year as possible, so you can be near the front of the line.
- Read the Rules: If your local program has a short application window, you need to make sure you follow all of the rules the first time. If you dont include all of the necessary information or if you fill out some forms incorrectly, your application may move to the back of the line until the proper forms are submitted.
- Resubmission Deadline: If the SM determines your initial application is missing some information or if the SM needs extra information, you may be able to keep your place in line if you return the application within a certain number of days. Make sure youre aware of any resubmission deadline, as you dont want your application to go to the back of the line.
