Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it will launch a new grant program to provide additional funding to school districts that have funds withheld by their state or are otherwise financially penalized for implementing strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, such as universal indoor masking. The announcement is part of President Biden’s plan to combat COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of students, educators, families, and school communities.
Educators, leaders, and parents are working hand in hand in communities across the nation to protect schoolchildren returning to in-person learning, and the Biden Administration will do everything it can to support them doing right by kids.
The new grant program, Project SAFE , anticipates using funding within the Department of Education from Title IV, Part F, School Safety National Activities, of the Every Student Succeeds Act. Local school districts would be able to apply for Project SAFE grants that will allow them to restore funding withheld by state leaderssuch as for school board members or superintendents who have had their pay cutwhen a school district implemented strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in schools. The Emergency Food Assistance Program #
TEFAP is a federal grant that provides food to low-income Americans, regardless of age, both directly to families for home consumption and to emergency food providers like food banks, pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.
Eligibility criteria may include participation in existing food or other assistance programs for which income is considered as a basis for eligibility.

What Kc Schools Plans Were For Covid Funding
Federal relief funds for schools are meant to address the pandemics impact, including helping students catch up academically, modifying buildings to improve air quality, acquiring technology and preventing COVID spread with personal protective equipment.
Schools would like to use this most recent round of funding to continue their work and, in some cases, add projects.
On the academic side, KCPS has used funds to increase staffing, such as hiring full-time substitute teachers assigned to specific schools or adding staff like paraprofessionals, interventionists and tutors who provide extra one-on-one support to students who are struggling.
The district has also hired additional teachers to reduce class sizes as students try to catch up from pandemic learning loss, and it has added a virtual academy.
Hickman Mills also used funds to incentivize teachers to join the district, as well as combating what Obeng calls the COVID slide with efforts to improve student achievement such as tutoring and evening classes.
Theres learning loss that has happened during this period, he said. Whether youve been out of school or in school, it hasnt been the same because weve just been triaging every day.
Last year, the district provided extended summer school with both in-person and virtual options, Obeng said. Hed like to do something similar this summer.
Schools also hope to use funds to update their buildings.
