Colt Combat Commander Best Colt 1911 Under $1000

Colt’s Government Model 45 ACP 1911 Pistol

The latest version of the venerable Combat Commander features a beavertail grip safety, G10 grips, and durable spring recoil system that Colt claims will reduce recoil. The barrel is 4.25 inches long to make it more preferable for concealment over a full sized model.

The barrel is stainless steel while the frame and slide are blued. The hammer is a classic style Commander hammer. The Combat Commander is available in both Colt .45 ACP and 9mm.

The 1911 Has Come A Long Way Since Colt’s Original 1911 Government Model

The differences between Colt 1911 Models in .45 ACP:

  • Government: 5-inch barrel, 8+1 capacity .
  • Commander: 4.25-inch barrel, 8+1 capacity.
  • Officer: 3.5-inch barrel, 6 and 7+1 capacity.
  • Defender: 3-inch barrel, 7+1 capacity.

The venerable Model 1911A1 was manufactured by Colt until 1971. Shortly after the war, Colt introduced a new gun, the Commander, which was based on the Colt 1911 Government design. This gun was essentially a shortened version of the A1 and was manufactured with a 4.25-inch barrel. Formerly, a 5-inch barrel had been the standard for full size semi-autos. The new gun was the first to feature an aluminum frame. It was a startling innovation at the time because the handgun mindset was mostly limited to steel. Nevertheless, the shooting public readily accepted the Commander.

Colt Combat Unit Rail Gun

As the name suggests, this version of the Colt 1911 is designed for tactical/combat purposes and sports a rail. It also has the same dual spring recoil system of the Combat Commander, Novak night sights, a beavertail grip safety, an undercut trigger guard, a 1913 Picatinny rail for adding lights and lasers, and checkering on the front strap in order to get a more secure grip in slippery conditions. The Combat Unit Rail is available in both 9mm Luger and Colt 45 ACP.

Early History And Adaptations

Colt Series 70 Government Model .45 ACP caliber pistol for sale.

The M1911 pistol originated in the late 1890s as the result of a search for a suitable self-loading pistol to replace the variety of revolvers then in service. The United States was adopting new firearms at a phenomenal rate several new pistols and two all-new service rifles , as well as a series of revolvers by Colt and Smith & Wesson for the Army and Navy, were adopted just in that decade. The next decade would see a similar pace, including the adoption of several more revolvers and an intensive search for a self-loading pistol that would culminate in the official adoption of the M1911 after the turn of the decade.

Hiram S. Maxim had designed a self-loading rifle in the 1880s, but was preoccupied with machine guns. Nevertheless, the application of his principle of using cartridge energy to reload led to several self-loading pistols in 1896. The designs caught the attention of various militaries, each of which began programs to find a suitable one for their forces. In the U.S., such a program would lead to a formal test at the turn of the 20th century.

During the end of 1899 and start of 1900, a test of self-loading pistols, including entries from Mauser , Mannlicher , and Colt , was conducted.

Colt Series 70

There are many variants of the 1911 offered by Colt today. For a long period of time, Colt was one of the few manufacturers of the 1911 and as a result faced minimal to no competition on the civilian market.

Today of course, it seems that every gun manufacturer out there has at least one 1911 out, but each of these Colts are still a perfectly viable option to choose from:

For some, the Colt 1911 Government in .45 ACP caliber is the pistol by definition.

For others, it is an object to own, appreciating the pistols fine craftsmanship, aesthetics or historical importance. Although it was designed over 100 years ago, the Colt Government is still an object of worship among its fans and in spite of its age, is still a very usable weapon for home and personal self-defense as well as unrivalled in precision shooting and some shooting sports specialties. Although, some know-all Gunslingers whisper among themselves a motto that should not be all that easily dismissed: “show your friends a Colt, and show your enemies a Glock”.

The Colt 1911 has many advantages: accuracy, a very effective caliber, reliability- once a competent tuning has been performed on the gun- , excellent ergonomics. In our opinion, its defects are its considerable weight, lesser firepower than all other semiautomatic handguns based on double stacked magazines, and its size.

Elaborating on the size, we must mention that the 1911 is a full size handgun originally designed for military open carry use.

Often first time purchasers of 1911 system based handguns complain that their guns experience recurring malfunctions or failures.
