Theory Of Operation Colt 45 Acp Government Model Pistol
1. Each time a cartridge is fired, the parts of the pistol function in a given order. The cycle of functioning is divided into eight steps. It should be kept in mind that more than one step may occur at the same time. Assume for the purposes of this discussion that a loaded magazine is in the weapon and a live cartridge is in the chamber. The hammer is fully cocked, the safety lock is off, the grip safety is depressed, the trigger is squeezed and the round is ignited. The cycle of functioning begins.
1. Feeding As the slide moves to the rear due to the force of recoil, the underside of it clears the top of the magazine. The magazine follower, under pressure from the magazine spring, forces the top round up against the lips of the magazine. This places the top round in position to be picked up by the face of the slide during its forward movement.
2. Chambering At the termination of the rearward movement of the slide, the expanding recoil spring forces the slide forward. The lower portion of the face of the slide passes between the lips of the magazine, strips the top cartridge from the magazine and pushes it to the bullet ramp and up into the chamber. During this movement, the base of the cartridge slides up the face of the slide. At this time, the extractor enters the extracting groove in the head of the cartridge. Chambering is complete when the cartridge is fully seated in the chamber and the face of the slide is against the rear extension of the barrel.

The U.S. military procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols during its service life. The pistol served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The 1911 is generally viewed as one of the finest combat pistols ever designed and the first successful self-loading pistol. 1911 was designed by American firearms inventor John Browning and is the oldest service pistol in the world, still used in over 25 nations for over 100 years it has proven itself to be one of the most popular and timeless handguns ever made. Bone Up On Legendary Colt Firearms
Subsequently, Colt produced the same pistol with a steel frame and named this more traditional model a Combat Commander. Ever since, the term Commander has been used to designate 1911s that have 4.25-inch barrels.
Not long afterward, Colt introduced a pistol with a 3.5-inch barrel, looking to develop a firearm that would satisfy the concealed carry market. Colt called this gun the Officers Model. It had a shorter length overall frame and used lightweight six-round magazines. This model name is used today to denote the smallest versions of particular models, versions with shorter barrels and frames.
In the 1970s, the MK IV Series 70 Government Model superseded the standard Government Model. The main modifications in the new model were a slightly heavier slide and a slotted collet barrel bushing.
In 1983 Colt introduced its MK IV Series 80 models, which had an additional passive firing pin safety lock that did not allow the pistol to fire if the trigger was not pulled to the end of its travel. Although some people feel that the change had a negative effect on trigger pull, it is probably a necessary evil in a highly litigious world. Still, it has not been completely accepted by higher level competition shooters who want a decent trigger pull on their firearms. At this time, the half-cock notch was also redesigned.

Early History And Adaptations
The M1911 pistol originated in the late 1890s as the result of a search for a suitable self-loading pistol to replace the variety of revolvers then in service. The United States was adopting new firearms at a phenomenal rate several new pistols and two all-new service rifles , as well as a series of revolvers by Colt and Smith & Wesson for the Army and Navy, were adopted just in that decade. The next decade would see a similar pace, including the adoption of several more revolvers and an intensive search for a self-loading pistol that would culminate in the official adoption of the M1911 after the turn of the decade.
Hiram S. Maxim had designed a self-loading rifle in the 1880s, but was preoccupied with machine guns. Nevertheless, the application of his principle of using cartridge energy to reload led to several self-loading pistols in 1896. The designs caught the attention of various militaries, each of which began programs to find a suitable one for their forces. In the U.S., such a program would lead to a formal test at the turn of the 20th century.
During the end of 1899 and start of 1900, a test of self-loading pistols, including entries from Mauser , Mannlicher , and Colt , was conducted.

Gun Review: Colt 1911 Government Series 80 45 Acp
On March 29, 1911, Lt. Col. John T. Thompson of the U.S. Ordnance Department sent a letter to Colts in Hartford, Connecticut. The purpose was to inform them that the military testing held at Springfield Armory just two weeks prior had concluded and John Moses Brownings 1911 design produced by Colt had come out on top.
Just like that, a legend was born. The M1911 served as the standard sidearm for American soldiers for the next 74 years.
In the decades following the guns rise to fame, dozens of companies have put their own spin on the platform, but theres an allure that still surrounds the pistols made by Colt.
The gun up for review is a newly-manufactured Colt 1911 Government Model. Plenty of reviews are done for 1911s from all kinds of manufacturers, but we dont seem to see as many honest-to-goodness Colts put through their paces.
Many a keystroke has been dedicated to the differences between the Colt Series 70 and Series 80 pistols. Ive shot both and like them both. While Colt has reintroduced the Series 70, the gun reviewed here is a Series 80 model, which has an MSRP that is $100 less than the Series 70.
The fit between the slide and the frame is excellent. Unlike the stories you hear of pistols that literally rattled in the hands of GIs in WWII, this gun makes no such sound.
Each pistol ships with two, seven-round flush magazines, both bearing the company name and the Rampant Colt on the floorplate.

The Colt Frontier Six
The Colt Frontier or Frontier Six-Shooter was a Colt’s 1873 “Model P” type revolver manufactured in .44-40 Winchester caliber instead of .45 Colt so that it was compatible with Winchester Model 1873 ammunition. Production began in 1877. Colt Frontier Six-Shooter was the actual name of the Colt pistol model, and this was acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. After 1889, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation “.44-40” was added. Later Colt 1878 Double Action Army Models also wore this designation on the barrel when chambered in .44 WCF/.44-40 Winchester. The Bisley 1895 Model was the final Colt to wear the Frontier Six Shooter designation.
The 1911 Has Come A Long Way Since Colt’s Original 1911 Government Model
The differences between Colt 1911 Models in .45 ACP:
- Government: 5-inch barrel, 8+1 capacity .
- Commander: 4.25-inch barrel, 8+1 capacity.
- Officer: 3.5-inch barrel, 6 and 7+1 capacity.
- Defender: 3-inch barrel, 7+1 capacity.
The venerable Model 1911A1 was manufactured by Colt until 1971. Shortly after the war, Colt introduced a new gun, the Commander, which was based on the Colt 1911 Government design. This gun was essentially a shortened version of the A1 and was manufactured with a 4.25-inch barrel. Formerly, a 5-inch barrel had been the standard for full size semi-autos. The new gun was the first to feature an aluminum frame. It was a startling innovation at the time because the handgun mindset was mostly limited to steel. Nevertheless, the shooting public readily accepted the Commander.
