How Do I Change The Name On My Social Security Card
There are a couple of ways you can perform a Social Security card name change. The easiest is by making the request online through your My Social Security account. Depending on the state you live in, you might be unable to complete the request online. If you cannot, then you will need to mail in the application for name change with the required documentation or visit your local Social Security office.
Getting Help In Person
You can apply for any type of benefit, get forms and information, and get help with Social Security issues in person at one of the more than 1,200 SSA field offices.
Social Security offices shut down in March 2020 and for most of the pandemic provided in-person service by appointment only and just for select situations involving urgent benefit issues or Social Security numbers.
While walk-in service resumed April 7, Social Security recommends scheduling your visit in advance. If you visit a field office without an appointment, the SSA says to expect long lines, especially at typically busy times, like Mondays, the day after a federal holiday and during the first week of the month.

California Law Limits The Public Display Of Social Security Numbers
A California law bars organizations from publicly displaying SSNs2. The law prohibits:
- Printing SSNs on ID cards or badges
- Printing SSNs on documents mailed to customers, unless the law requires it or the document is a form or application
- Printing SSNs on postcards or any other mailer where its visible without opening an envelope
- Avoiding legal requirements by encoding or embedding SSNs in cards or documents, such as using a bar code, chip, or magnetic strip
- Requiring people to send SSNs over the Internet, unless the connection is secure or the number is encrypted
- Requiring people to use an SSN to log onto a web site, unless a password is also used
- The law applies to businesses, government, and other entities.
How You Receive Benefits
If you receive both SSI and SSP benefits, you will receive your SSP benefits the same way you chose to receive your SSI benefit.
If you receive SSP benefits but do not receive SSI benefits, you can choose how to receive your benefits. We strongly encourage you to receive benefits through direct deposit, which is safe, fast and convenient.
If you currently have a representative payee for your SSI benefits, that person will also manage your SSP benefits. If you want to change your representative payee, you must contact SSA. If you receive SSP but do not receive SSI benefits, you can assign or change a payee by calling SSP at 1-855-488-0541.

If You Think You’ve Been Scammed Do This
If you’ve received a call claiming there’s an issue with your Social Security number, that you are a victim of identity theft or some other scheme, don’t panic. The Social Security Administration says that its employees will rarely call a person and threaten them with legal action or arrest.
Some scammers will contact people and threaten legal action, arrest, offer to increase benefits, protect assets or resolve identity theft, the SSA explained in a post. Keep your eye out for any caller who says there are issues with your Social Security number or account, asks you to pay a fine or a debt or pretends to be a government agency.
If you receive a call, hang up and report the number to the Office of the Inspector General by filling out this form.

Contacting Social Security In Person
When Social Security offices are fully reopened, if you cant resolve your problem or find the information you need on the website or over the phone, you can go to one of the field offices . In some casesif you need to request a Social Security card or update certain kinds of personal informationyou may have to visit an office.
But be forewarned: It probably wont be fun. You can schedule an appointment, though it could take weeks or more than a month to get one. Just heading to the office is an option, but youll probably wait more than a couple of hours to be seen. Some offices report lines out the door.

Social Security Numbers Of Nearly 2000 Trump White House Visitors Including Governors And Former Cabinet Members Leaked By January 6 Committee: Report
The House committee entitled the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, now likely defunct, may have recently released the Social Security numbers of nearly 2,000 Americans, many of whom are allies of former President Donald Trump.
According to the Washington Post, hundreds of documents had been released in the committees final report, including a spreadsheet containing the identities of thousands of people who, based on visitor logs, had visited the White House in December 2020. Though the personal identification information of most of the visitors listed on the logs had been redacted in the spreadsheet, about 1,900 of the visitors had their information including their Social Security number publicized.
Those reportedly affected include South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and her family, Texas Governor Greg Abbott , and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster . Two members of Trumps cabinet were also reportedly affected: former Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson. Two unnamed federal judges, an attorney for a Jan. 6 witness, and at least six people who testified before the committee also reportedly had their information compromised.
According to the Post, none of the individuals whose information had allegedly been exposed had been notified.
