Government Sponsored Solar Program

Through small business innovation research, agricultural producers found that solar power is not only a great way to save money, but it is a great way to generate clean energy to power our farms. Finally, after enough research and development, REAP was born.

The REAP is a program put on the United States Department of Agriculture. REAP stands for Rural Energy for America Program, and is offering grants and loans. Essentially, this program is a government incentive that is designed to help small and rural businesses, as well as farmers, obtain energy efficiency upgrades and install new solar systems.

According to Energy.gov, in 2015 alone a total of $63 million in grants and loans were awarded through the USDA REAP program. Whether you are a large farming operation or a small business in a rural area, you may be able to apply.

For Made In Minnesota Awardees: How To Receive The Incentive Payment

Payments from the Made in Minnesota program are production-based incentives, established by a systems energy production, and paid annually each year for 10 years. Each April, for the 10 years following interconnection, Made in Minnesota recipients will receive an email message listing the amount of energy in kWh, as recorded by their utility, that their system has produced in the preceding year and the corresponding payment owed based on the system production and the incentive amount.

As a requirement of this program, recipients must respond to this email message from the Minnesota Department of Commerce, attesting to the energy production to receive the incentive payment. Made in Minnesota recipients who respond and confirm that their energy production is accurate by the due date stated in the email message will receive an incentive payment no later than July 1 each eligible year. Incentive payments will only be issued once a year.

Solar Loans: The Fhas Powersaver Program

There are a number of home equity loans available to help offset the cost of outfitting a house with solar panels. These loans essentially work as equity loans, creating a lien against the house and reducing its equity. Because of how the loans are structured, homeowners can likely save more on their electric bills than they will have to pay in loan payments, making them a very good deal :

  • Interest rates range from 3.5 to 7.5 percent

  • Terms are typically 7 to 20 years

  • Interest may be tax-deductible

Federal Credits For Energy Efficient Improvements

You can claim an additional 10% tax credit for qualified energy-efficient improvements. These include insulation that meets the 20180International Energy Conservation Code criteria, and doors, roofs, windows, and skylights that meet or exceed the Energy Star program requirements.

To find out what exactly your insulation requirements are, go to the 2018 IECC page. Once there, look at the insulation table in section 402. The minimum insulation values for your walls, roof , floor, and slab are listed on table R402.1.2. Once you know the minimum R-value, you can go to a home improvement store and purchase your insulation required.

For example, if your walls are made of wood, and your wood frame wall R-value is 13, go to a home improvement store and tell them that youre looking for R-13 insulation for your wood-framed walls. Theyll know the type of insulation to get, and they can help you with the installation. To find out if your other energy-efficient improvements meet this credits requirements, go to the Energy Star page to find out what the roofs solar reflectance should be.

Canadian Solar Energy Programs

Government broadens remit on renewable energy rules

Solar is becoming a large part of the Canadian Energy Solution

Across Canada, home owners are adding solar panels to their roofs in order to save electricity and to reduce their power bills. They are choosing to use their own solar energy first, and many homes meet 20-50% of their annual power needs from their rooftop system. They are choosing to use green energy over nuclear and coal. Since prices for solar power in Canada have fallen dramatically over the past 5 years, solar power systems are now affordable. These Canadian Solar Energy Programs make it easier for Canadians to integrate solar power systems into their homes. Solar power systems last for decades, so home owners will continue to save money on their power bills for years to come. An investment in solar energy is an investment in your family’s environmental and financial future.HES PV offers Grid-Tie Systems that make it easier than ever to integrate a solar power system into your home. Getting Government Tax Credits

Federal government incentives are given in the form of tax credits. The current program in the United States will give you a 30% credit for 2019 and 26% for 2020 of the installation cost of your solar power system. You have to purchase and install the system first, and then you can apply for the credit.

In addition to federal credits, consider applying for local and state incentives. Contact your local utility company for utility incentives that you may be eligible for. Use the energy incentives database at desire.org to determine the local and state programs that you can apply for in your zip code.

To apply for a federal tax credit, fill out IRS Form 5695 and submit it with your income taxes. Form 5695 is a worksheet used to calculate the amount of tax credit you will receive. The credit amount calculated from IRS form 5695 is then entered into line 52 of IRS form 1040. Save all your receipts and the manufacturers certification statement for your records. Your solar power system must have an efficiency of 30 percent or better, and at least 50 percent of your homes energy must come from solar energy.

Special Measures For Northern And Off

We recognize that Canadians living in northern and off-grid communities face specific challenges when it comes to completing home retrofits, including higher equipment and labour costs.

Renewables Research And Development

DOE and other federal government agencies fund research and development of renewable energy technologies. Most of the research and development is carried out at the National Labs and in cooperation with academic institutions and private companies. The availability of these programs depends on annual appropriations from the U.S. Congress.

Other Types Of Incentives

Its Official: Solar Roads Are Another Government

On the national level, the US Department of Energy provides several grant programs and funding opportunities for specific entities that pursue clean energy, including schools. The DOEs Loan Programs Office will work with schools that want to pursue solar energy and other clean power sources to find funding opportunities through loans and grants with various programs. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory provides various funding options for K-12 schools to help each organization design a finical blueprint and take advantage of various tax credits and other incentives.

The benefits of bringing solar power to schools are clear, but the process can be expensive, especially if structural repairs are needed for installation. However, with significant future savings along with the numerous funding options available, the upfront cost of solar power should not hold schools back from pursuing cleaner energy sources.

Us Clean Energy Rule: Regulating Emissions

In June of 2019, the Environmental Protection Agency finalized the Affordable Clean Energy Rule. The rule repeals and replaces the Obama administrations Clean Power Plan which was never put into effect due to Supreme Court Intervention.

ACE is an emission guideline that uses heat rate improvement as the Best System of Emission Reduction for CO2 from a coal-fired electric generating unit . The emission guidelines are focused solely on designated facilities defined as coal-fired EGUs with a capacity greater than 25 MW-net and commenced construction on or before January 8, 2014. There are approximately 600 EGUs at 300 facilities that could be covered by this rule. States are then required to develop and submit their plans to regulate emissions in accordance with ACE guidelines for EPA review and approval.

In 2030, the ACE rule is projected to:

  • Reduce CO2 emissions by 11 million short tons
  • Reduce SO2 emissions by 5,700 tons
  • Reduce NOx emissions by 7,100 tons
  • Reduce PM2.5 emissions by 400 tons
  • Reduce mercury emissions by 59 pounds
  • Solar Incentives For Businesses: Accelerated And Bonus Depreciation

‘Height of hypocrisy’ for government to take credit for renewable energy schemes

If youre a business owner looking to install solar, this is the incentive for you! Thanks to accelerated depreciation, businesses can write off the value of their solar energy system through the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System , which reduces businesses tax burden and accelerates the return on investment youll see from solar. Qualified solar energy equipment is eligible for a cost recovery period of five years. Accelerated depreciation can reduce net system cost by an additional 30 percent.

Importantly, some states also offer their own MACRS tax benefit to businesses purchasing solar, which can further reduce your tax burden and decrease your payback period.

Additionally, its worth noting that the federal 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act allows for 100 percent bonus depreciation in year one, which often provides an even better benefit for federal taxes than MACRS. However, unless its extended, this benefit will disappear at the end of 2022.
