Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze When It Comes To Pay
Getting the permits and credentials for AA& E requires not just the tedium of completing applications but also some costs. Josh Jesse already had his government security clearance after a decade in the Army, but Krystal had to obtain hers before she was able to haul high-security freight. The Jesses also had to get their hazmat and tanker endorsements. They had to pay around $600 between the two of them to get updated credentials before they could start.
There was a lot of paperwork involved in making sure we were alright to run this freight a lot of investment in it, Josh says. It was quite a bit of money.
Josh says when he and Krystal started driving team as company drivers hauling general freight around four years ago, they were making 33 cents per mile. When they moved to R& R Trucking, a sister company of Tri-State that also hauled AA& E before being merged under the Tri-State name, their pay nearly doubled. Now theyre paid 70% of a load and 100% of the fuel surcharge. Since they run flatbed, they also earn tarp pay.
While AA& E freight requires teams, most hauls are shorter and dont require a true team operation. Malm and Wheeler run about 110,000 miles a year under AA& E freight and have a goal each year to gross $300,000. We track it every week, and were on target to be above that this year, Malm says.
The Jesses say they average 100,000-130,000 miles a year hauling AA& E for Tri-State, which is more typical for a solo driver than a team.
Freight Request For Offers
The request for offers is the process by which GSA invites TSPs to submit rates to provide transportation services for the shipment of freight. The RFO transmits the special filing instructions for the submission of rate offers.
TSPs who have been approved by the Freight Management branch and have agreed to abide by the STOS terms, conditions, and associated supplements, are eligible to file rates. RFOs are issued prior to rate filing periods.
Our STOS establishes a uniform basis for buying freight transportation through our rules and accessorial services. GSA solicitation and acceptance of rates and charges provide highly competitive pricing, which in many cases includes the solicitation and acceptance of rates specific to an agencys facility and traffic characteristics. Read the TSP rate filing instructions .

Want To Haul Military Freight Check Out Sddcs Requirements
Are you a freight carrier company seeking to get into military freight transportation? Well, if you are, there are several ways to get into that niche. The easiest way is to get on the list of a broker approved by the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command , and get work from them. But if you want to cut the middle man and move Department of Defense freight yourself, there are several requirements carriers must comply with first.
SDDC Carrier Requirements
You can obtain a SCAC from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association by applying online. There is a $68 fee if you apply online and a $78 fee if you file by paper. What Government Contracts Require
When bidding for a government contract, there are certain things you you have to keep in mind. Some of them include
Time and resources
A lot of businesses, especially the new ones, may not be aware of the number of hours and resources required to pursue and manage a government contract. For example, part of applying for federal contracts involves completing Representations and Certifications.
These provisions require you to represent and certify to a variety of statements ranging from environmental rules and compliance to entity size. Representations and Certifications are designed to ensure that you are in compliance with laws and regulations and this is an extremely detailed part of the process.
In addition to taking a great deal of time to complete paperwork, there are legal implications as well. If youre going through this process for the first time or on your own, its advisable to obtain a legal review so you dont make a mistake.
In addition to the time, resources, and credentials needed to obtain a government contract, there may be additional requirements as well. Government contracts, similar to many large commercial contracts, may require additional liability insurance. This is more especially as you are into the trucking business that typically requires more than the average business insurance.

The Benefits Of Factoring Government Freight
A large government contract has the potential to slow down your working capital and make it difficult to successfully run your business. Whether youre working with FEMA, the Department of Defense, the Coast Guard, the National Guard or any other government agency, factoring unpaid invoices can get you the funds you need quickly, which is especially helpful if your hauling supplies for disaster recovery.
Some benefits of invoice factoring include:
- High advance rates
Connect With Freight Brokers
Remember, though, that load boards arent the only way to get contracts. If you arent finding as much success using load boards on your own, try connecting with and reaching out to specific freight brokers. A freight broker is a middleman between truckers and shippers and can often do a lot of the negotiating on behalf of each party. As you make a name for yourself, freight brokers are more likely to take you on.

Starting A Trucking Business: Obtain Clients
The trucking industry is a highly competitive, demanding business, and trucking business owners need to be proactive in finding customers. If youre an owner, check online bidding sites for available accounts and contracts. A number of sites focus on contract bidding.
In many cases, the owner who offers the lowest bid lands a contract. Although it wont result in a lot of profit, bidding low is usually best for startups. Other avenues for finding clients and contracts include placing classified ads.
Remember that no matter how great your fleet is, making your clients happy is very important. Satisfied clients often recommend quality trucking companies to people they know. This is why its vital to provide the best service you can during all phases of transport before, during, and after the job.
In addition, when clients receive excellent service, theyre much more likely to come back to you.

How To Get Trucking Contracts From Companies Or Government
Do you run a trucking company? If YES, here is a detailed guide on how to get trucking contracts from government or companies like walmart, amazon, Medicaid. Moving freight is one of the lucrative businesses one can start in the United States.
But setting up this business requires that you put down a whole lot of money, this means that your startup capital would usually be on the high side because you need to purchase a truck and set up the business. You also have to carry some reasonably financed insurance before you can even get registered.
Having spent that much money, it would be in your best interests if you are able to get enough load hauling contracts that would keep you in business for a long time, so as to ensure that you are able to recoup your investments.
One way tucking companies are assured of recouping their investments in a short time and go ahead to start making profits is if they can get contracts from big companies including the government of the state or federation. It is worthy of note that one of the largest shippers in the united states is the federal government.
The government has been known from time immemorial to outsource loads of jobs to small fleets and owner-operator trucking businesses, so you should never worry about your small business being qualified enough to win a contract from the government. What you need to worry about is how to position your business to win these contracts.
The Dot Consists Of Several Smaller Agencies
Both federal and state governments influence the transportation industry through legislation, infrastructure spending, safety regulations and funding.
Within the U.S. government, there are numerous federal agencies that carry out these functions, but the largest and most recognizable is the Department of Transportation .
The DOT falls under the executive branch, and is the primary regulatory agency for transportation in the United States.
Official Mission of the DOT:
To ensure America has the safest, most efficient and modern transportation system in the world, which boosts our economic productivity and global competitiveness and enhances the quality of life in communities both rural and urban.
Within the DOT are several smaller federal agencies, also known as administrations. Heres a snapshot of two prominent DOT administrations:
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
The FMSCA was established by the DOT on January 1, 2000, to improve the safety of commercial motor carrier operations.
Most every trucking company is familiar with the FMCSA in it’s capacity regulating driver Hours of Service .
Recently, the FMSCA approved changes to Hours of Service regulations and published the HOS Final Rule, which took effect on September 29, 2020.
Here’s an overview of all of FMSCA’s responsibilities:
