Tips For Participating In Government Auctions

  • The general rule for auctions is that the highest bidder wins, and cancellation is not possible. Check with the auction site ahead of time to find out if you can cancel a bid.

  • Each auction website operates differently. In some cases, the government agency itself runs the auctions. In other cases, the agency operates the shopping site, but a third-party company handles the auction itself.

  • Find out what forms of payment auctions accept. There is no uniform payment policy across all the different auctions. Some auctions accept credit card payments or personal checks. Others, such as the Internal Revenue Service , don’t accept either of these. Most auctions accept cashier’s checks.

  • For real estate auctions, you may need to work with a broker or real estate agent to bid or make the purchase. Also, for real estate auctions, find out if financing is permitted. Many times it is not and the full purchase price is due when you win the bid.

Campus Community Surplus Property Procedures

According to the university’s Surplus Equipment Policy, surplus equipment and supplies can be used back on campus for university use only. Faculty and staff can view surplus property on the third Tuesday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Individuals may transport items back to campus on their own or larger items can be transported by Property Control staff. University personnel will be required to complete a surplus equipment return form.

Computer equipment will only be released to Computer Coordinators, Computer Services or CNAS Electronic Support. The reason for this restriction is that most computers have already had components removed by the preceding university departments/personnel and the units are generally not in good working order.

A list of items stored in surplus is not maintained. Please do not call Property Control asking if there are specific items at the warehouse. Examples of available property are: various media items, televisions, refrigerators, microwaves, office chairs, student chairs, metal and wood desks, tables, file cabinets and vehicles.

Departments that select equipment to be returned to campus, and then send the equipment back to surplus within ninety days, will be charged fifty dollars though budget transfer to Property Control.
