Gov. Jay Inslee issued a proclamation prohibiting evictions due to tenants not being able to pay rent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The proclamation ended on Oct. 31, 2021.

If you need rent assistance, you or your landlord can contact the local organization handling rent assistance applications in your county: List of county Eviction Rent Assistance Program providers.

If you are a tenant under 25, you can also contact a local Youth and Young Adult Eviction Rent Assistance program provider.

In addition, there are two legal resources available to tenants and landlords.

• Eviction resolution program. You can contact your local dispute resolution center and ask for their help resolving eviction-related issues. You can find a directory of centers here.
• Right to counsel legal program. Tenants who receive public assistance or are very low income $25,760 annual income for an individual or $53,000 for a family of four can access a lawyer for free during eviction proceedings. How Can I Apply For Emergency Rental Assistance

Renters struggling to pay rent, utilities, or other housing costs should apply to the U.S. Department of Treasurys Emergency Rental Assistance program in their communities. Assistance can cover rent, utilities, and home energy costs, including includes electricity, gas, fuel oil, water and sewer and trash removal. Depending on the area, renters can apply for assistance themselves or will need landlords to submit an application first. Each local program has its own guidelines. If Youre In Supported Sheltered Or Temporary Housing

You can make a new claim if:

• youre living in temporary accommodation, such as a B& B arranged by your council
• youre living in a refuge for survivors of domestic abuse
• youre living in sheltered or supported housing which provides you with care, support or supervision

If you do not get care, support or supervision through your supported or sheltered housing, you can apply for Universal Credit to help with housing costs.

What Rental Assistance Looks Like In Some States

In many states, programs handing out the rental relief money are already well on their way to keeping renters in their homes.

The Illinois Housing Development Authority is administering a statewide $1.5 billion rental assistance program. Eligible tenants and landlords can apply for one-time grants of up to $25,000 to cover a maximum 15 months of missed rent from June 2020 to August 2021.

The Illinois Rental Assistance Program is a testament to how good government can make a life-changing difference for people when our dollars follow our values, Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker said recently while announcing details of the program.

In Texas, a program is covering unpaid rent and utilities going as far back as March 13, 2020, and providing assistance for rent and utility costs that are current or past due, plus up to two months of future rent and utilities.

Later, tenants can apply for another three months of aid if the program’s coffers havent been scraped clean. The rental assistance available in Texas caps out at $4,600 per month.

And on Tuesday, New Yorkers were able to start applying for their states $2.7 billion emergency rental assistance program. Eligible households will receive up to 12 months for rent and utilities past due. If a household spends 30% or more of its gross monthly income on rent, it could receive three months of additional support.
