Registration Requirements For Drone Flying In South Africa
In accordance with Part 101.02.4 of the Civil Aviation Regulations, 2011, No remotely piloted aircraft shall be operated within the Republic of South Africa, unless such RPA has been issued with a certificate of registration by the Director.
How to register RPA
Applicant should fill the following form, depending on the intent:
- Form CA-47R1 application for new registration of the RPA.
- Form CA-47R2 for change of ownership.
- Form CA-47R3 for deletion due to accident or export.
- Form CA-47R4 amendment of C of R due to change of company name, change of address, or change of manufacturers name.
- Form CA-47R5 for duplicate C of R as a result of being lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.

Caught On Camera: Nighttime Drone Activity Recorded In Rural Saunders County
Reports of mysterious drones have been in the news since late December, but on Tuesday night, 6 News experienced and recorded such an encounter first-hand on a rural road a few miles outside of Omaha.
6 News was on the scene outside of Mead, Neb., when a 4- to 6-foot drone flew overhead. The drone flew so close to the ground, the sound of the propellers was caught on camera.
“Theres not much out here to look at, so it kind of makes you wonder, well, if theyre not looking at anything, what are they planning, you know? Or whoever or whatever is going on?” Saunders County Deputy Kyle Kennenbeck said. “It definitely raises curiosity.”
6 News adjusted the brightness, contrast, and slowed down our video to confirm what we saw was in the shape of a plane, with lights attached to a single object.
Sightings of unclaimed drones flying in clusters and often in formation have been reported
Kennebeck said his first such sighting was on Monday.
“The first one was very close I would say it was still 200 feet in the air, so I wouldnt say I had a clear picture since it was dark with my naked eye,” he said. “But with the binoculars, I was able to see I was able to see at least one propeller. Im sure there was more, but with the blue light flashing, I was at least able to tell it wasnt one with wings it was one with big propellers, and I can definitely make the outline of it.”
It certainly was not your typical aircraft, he said.

Faas Recurrent Training Test Goes Live Online
Under the FAAs Final Rule on Remote ID which was among the biggest news stories of 2020 a big announcement was that rather than commercial pilots completing an in-person, FAA recurrent test every 24 calendar months, they could instead complete a free, online recurrent training course.
That course went live in April 2021, making it easy for drone pilots to keep their FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificates current. Its available on the FAA Safety Team website for no cost.
A Perfect Time To Refresh Your Knowledge
A flight instructor once told me that a pilot will never have more technical knowledge than they do on the day they pass their checkride. Remote pilots do not have a practical test to pass, but the principle of the forgetting curve still applies, and the clock starts ticking as soon as you stop active learning. Theres a solution for that: Keep learning.
With various regulation changes taking effect in March and April, including one that will soon allow remote pilots to fly at night without a waiver, theres no better time than now for a refresher.
Part of growing our skills is to take a fresh look at some assumptions and update our memories. All pilots suffer from a natural phenomenon known as the forgetting curve. First hypothesized by German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, its basically a math formula that describes how memory fades over time.
If you want to be a good pilot, strive to be a great pilot. If you want to be a great pilot, make a habit of refreshing your recollection on a regular basis, not just when its time to prepare to take a test.

Invasive Aerial Surveillance Can Identify You
With its capacity for precise zooming at short distances, aerial surveillance can, in combination with other automated identification technologies, allow for effortless cataloging of individuals and their activities. There are two prominent automated identification technologies that could allow for easy identification from immense distances: automated license plate readers and facial recognition technology. These technologies are already in wide use by government agencies. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement maintains a nationwide net of automated license plate readers to track individuals, and the FBI already maintains a facial recognition database of fifty percent of American adults and permits law enforcement from dozens of states to use it.
Amplifying these risks is a recent partnership between DJI and Axon, one of the leading producers of police body cameras. Axon also provides cloud computing services designed to allow law enforcement to sync data from a variety of sources, including cameras, and has spent years developing facial recognition technology for its products. With this partnership, which will allow DJI drone footage to sync with the Axon system, police drones with built-in facial recognition technology could soon become the norm.
Rules For Small Drones Take Effect
Final rules take effect today for remotely identifying drones and allowing operators of small drones to fly over people and at night under certain conditions.
Todays rules are an important first step in safely and securely managing the growing use of drones in our airspace, though more work remains on the journey to full integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems , said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. The Department looks forward to working with stakeholders to ensure that our UAS policies keep pace with innovation, ensure the safety and security of our communities, and foster the economic competitiveness of our country.
Drones can provide virtually limitless benefits, and these new rules will ensure these important operations can grow safely and securely, said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. The FAA will continue to work closely with other Department of Transportation offices and stakeholders from across the drone community to take meaningful steps to integrate emerging technologies that safely support increased opportunities for more complex drone use.

Local Drone Laws In California
These are drone laws that apply only to certain regions, cities, or counties within the state of California, and were created by various authorities within the state.
City of Hermosa BeachOrdinance 16-1363 // 2016
This ordinance requires drone operators to obtain an operating permit and identification number assigned by the City in order to fly a drone in Hermosa Beach. This ordinance also reinforces existing privacy laws, stating that no person shall operate a drone to record or transmit visual image or audio recording of any person or private property located in the City under circumstances in which the subject person or owner of the subject real property has a reasonable expectation of privacy. It is also stated that drones should not be flown on the grounds of, or less than 350 feet above ground level within the airspace overlaying a public school.
Sacramento CountyCounty Code 9.36.068 // 2018
This county code prohibits drones in Sacramento County parks except in areas specifically provided therefor or with express permission of the Director, in areas compatible to said use. A map of Sacramento County parks to which this code applies can be found here.
This municipal code prohibits the operations of drones in city parks.

WASHINGTON, April 21 – The Federal Aviation Administration said that final rules announced in December took effect on Wednesday allowing for small drones to fly over people and at night, a significant step toward their eventual use for widespread commercial deliveries.
The effective date was delayed about a month during the change in administration. The FAA said its long-awaited rules for the drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, will address security concerns by requiring remote identification technology in most cases to enable their identification from the ground.
Previously, small drone operations over people were limited to operations over people who were directly participating in the operation, located under a covered structure, or inside a stationary vehicle – unless operators had obtained a waiver from the FAA.

State Drone Laws In California
These are drone laws that apply to the entire state of California, and were created by the California State Legislature.
According to the California Department of Transportation and the California General Assembly, California has three state-wide laws concerning the use of drones in the state.
This regulation states that no person shall launch, land or operate a model aircraft or UAS within any park unit in the Orange Coast District .

Night Operations For Drones
Under the new rules, Part 107 waivers will no longer be required for typical night operations. The rules modify Section 107.29 to allow night operations so long as the operator has, after March 1, 2021, taken the FAA initial knowledge test or the new biannual recurrency training offered by FAA. Additionally, drones must be equipped with strobe lights visible for at least three statute miles.
Night operation waivers issued prior to March 16, 2021 expire on May 17, 2021, regardless of the expiration date identified on the waiver. However, most of the night waivers previously issued by the FAA comply with the requirements of the new 107.29 night regulation, and therefore, most operators who currently hold night waivers will not need to make substantial changes to their operations. Operators must ensure, however, that they take the FAAs night training course, once it becomes available.
Note that the anti-collision lighting is just that to increase visibility of the drone and to help other aircraft operators see the drone and avoid a collision. The FAA has not changed the visual line of sight requirements, and the FAA typically considers VLOS operations to be approximately ¼ mile from the operator, depending on lighting and other visibility factors. The RPIC still must be able to see the drone, avoid other airborne obstacles, and effectively navigate the drone at all times.
Wing Delivery Expands To Dallas Texas Area
Wing in October announced plans to expand to Frisco, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas. That makes Dallas the first major metro in the U.S. and the largest overall metro area to be participating in drone deliveries.
Throughout all of 2021, Wing says it made over 140,000 deliveries to peoples homes via drone, which is a 600% increase over 2020. Much of that was at the end of the year in the last quarter of 2021 Wing made twice as many deliveries as in all of 2020.

How Can You Spot A Drone At Night
If you’re sure someone is flying a drone around your property at night, it’s best to make sure of this fact and use some proven detection methods.
Do drone detector apps work?
You might find some apps in your phone app store that claim to detect drones by capturing their radio waves and telling you what kind of drone it is and where the signal comes from.
Phone drone detector apps don’t work, as most drone signals are encrypted, and even if using wifi, it’s impossible to tell if the drone is close to you or far away.
There are systems out there that allow more professional detection of drones but are usually used by the military, not just a simple phone app.
Watch out for the drone lights
As we’ve mentioned before, watching the lights of the drone is the easiest and most effective way to spot it at night.
If you see two pairs of red and green lights in the sky, it’s probably just a hobbyist drone. If you can barely detect these lights, it’s most certainly too far away to be able to spy on you anyway.
If there’s a powerful white light flashing in the sky, it’s probably a commercially used drone, and since the pilot made it so visible, it’s perhaps not intended for spying on anyone.

Autel Announces Fresh Competition To Djis Consumer Drones
Autel, which has headquarters in both Washington and China , announced two new drone series in September 2021. Dubbed the Autel EVO Nano and Autel EVO Lite drones, the lower-cost drones are priced starting at $649 and $1,149, respectively. The drones themselves are set to be made available in early 2022.

Use Motion Detection Cameras
You can use motion detection cameras to spot drones if you dont have much time to watch out for light or listen to sounds by yourself. In fact, motion detection cameras can often detect drones better than humans. Those cameras detect movement by comparing the series of images they capture. The camera will notify you of any intruding object when it detects any movement. Many motion detection cameras are programmed by default to send notifications to your phone.
Note that these cameras work best when you place them at strategic locations and not a place where both light and movement are hard to detect. Also, the camera that you choose must be able to see objects using infrared light at night rather than using visible light. Infrared light makes objects visible just like the normal white light that we are familiar with, so youll see the image of any drone that intrudes into your space, though the image will not have true colors.
