Cons Of Student Financial Aid

From January 2015, the Government has increased support to more than ...
  • Loan repayment required
  • Lifetime limits on Pell Grants
  • Private loans are more expensive and restrictive
  • Defaulting on loans hurts credit

Student loan payments, including principal and interest, on federally held student loans, have been suspended through Dec. 31, 2022 however, the suspension only applies to federal student loans held by the Department of Education.

The Department of Education also created an initiative called “Fresh Start” to help borrowers in default. Defaulted loans will return to repayment status and the record of default will be removed from credit reports.

The American Rescue Plan passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in March 2021 includes a provision that makes all student loan forgiveness from Jan. 1, 2021, to Dec. 31, 2025, tax-free.

Assistance Programs Reduce Poverty And Number Of Uninsured

Census data show that, as a group, programs that help families struggling to afford the basics are effective at substantially reducing the number of poor and uninsured Americans.

Taken together, federal benefits kept 40 million people who otherwise would be poor out of poverty in 2011, including 8.7 million children, according to the Census Bureaus Supplemental Poverty Measure . See Appendix Table 1 for state-by-state figures.

Social Security had the largest effect on poverty keeping 26 million people above the poverty line, including 16 million seniors. But other key programs keep millions of Americans out of poverty as well.

  • ImageThe EITC lifts more children out of poverty than any other program . The EITC kept 6.1 million Americans, including 3.1 million children, out of poverty in 2011. As noted above, the EITC and CTC together kept 9.4 million people including nearly 5 million children out of poverty.
  • SNAP kept 4.7 million Americans, including 2.1 million children, out of poverty in 2011, and is particularly effective at keeping children out of severe poverty that is, out of living below half of the poverty line. In 2011, SNAP lifted more children 1.5 million above half of the poverty line than any other program.
  • Unemployment insurance payments have been especially important in the current weak economy. UI kept 3.5 million Americans above the poverty line in 2011, including nearly 1 million children.

Major Findings On Us Economic Policies And Conditions Facing American Voters

The results of this latest survey show that American voters want the government to play a strong role in securing basic living standards for all people. Specifically, the majority of voters back a range of proposals to increase the economic security of and opportunities for low-income families. This section presents some of the specific findings.

On the responsibility of government to meet basic human rights and provide support

Strong majorities of voters across party lines view access to clean water, a quality public education, adequate food, and housing as basic human rights that should be secured by the federal government. The survey presented respondents with a series of items and asked them to rate them on a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 means that item represents a basic human right that should be guaranteed to everyone and 0 means that government should not be involved and that the provision of the item should be left completely to the free market.

Affordable, quality child care falls further down the list, although with majority support overall for government taking a role in providing it . Meanwhile, broadband internet access is seen as a basic human right by a majority of Democrats only .

Table 1

On individual economic situations in the wake of COVID-19

Overall, 44 percent of voters report experiencing at least one of the five items, with 28 percent experiencing three or more challenges and 13 percent of voters experiencing all five.

Establishing And Maintaining Credit

Trump Wants To Limit Aid For Low

Two of the many challenges for low-income families are establishing a solid credit history and maintaining good credit when you do.

Equifax, one of the three major credit bureaus in the U.S., estimated in 2020 that there were 25 million consumers who were credit invisible. That means they have not used a credit card or taken out any loans that would tell lenders how good they were at paying things off. Equifax judged another seven million people to be credit unscorable meaning they had used so little credit that there wasnt enough information to give them a credit score.

Lacking a credit history, low-income consumers either wont get approved for a loan or, if they do, they face much higher costs to use credit to purchase a home, car or any big-ticket item.

Higher-income consumers obviously possess more money, better lifestyles and more luxury items, but they also have more ways to get and keep good credit.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said low-income consumers are 240% more likely to start their credit history with negative records, such as a debt collection. Higher-income consumers start with positive records, such as opening a credit card or getting a co-signer who has good credit.
