According to OPM, you should consider applying for disability retirement when you have already provided your employing agency with full documentation of your medical condition and your agency has thoroughly explored all reasonable options to retain you in a productive capacity, including accommodations and reassignment. If you are in this situation, disability retirement may be a good option.
Before submitting your application, you should review OPMs following eligibility criteria:
- You have completed 18 months of Federal civilian service, creditable under FERS.
- While employed in a qualifying position under the retirement system, you have become disabled for useful and efficient service in your current job.
- The disability is expected to impact you for at least one year.
- Your employing agency must certify that it cannot accommodate your disability in your current position and that you have been considered for any existing vacant positions within the same agency, at the same grade or pay level, in the same commuting area, and for which you are qualified.
*Note: the time limit for applying to OPM may be waved in cases where the disabled individual was mentally incompetent on the date of separation or within one year of that date.
Dont Forget About Creditable Years Of Service
One of the most important aspects of the Federal Disability Retirement benefit is the ability to continue to receive towards your regular retirement. So, even if you are not working for the federal government, you will continue to receive creditable years of service for each year you are on the benefit just as if you were still employed with the federal government.
For example, if you worked 15 years as a federal employee and received federal disability retirement benefits for 20 years, then you would have a total of 35 creditable years of service towards your regular retirement.
This can play a significant role when your final regular retirement calculation is made at 62 and can increase your regular retirement annuity for the remainder of your life.

Can You Retire Early From Federal Service
Early retirement is granted to specific federal employees for a limited period of time under special circumstances. OPM allows agencies to provide these early retirement benefits through the VERA.
What is the earliest a federal employee can retire?
Under FERS, an employee who meets one of the following age requirements and service requirements is entitled to immediate retirement benefits: 62 years with five years of service, 60 with 20, minimum retirement age ) with 30 or MRA with 10 .

To qualify for early retirement, employees must have at least 20 years of service value and be at least 50 years old, or have at least 25 years of service time per year. Continuing Benefits & Deductions
If you’re currently a member of the CalPERS Health Program, you must meet specific requirements to continue your health insurance coverage into retirement, or maintain the right to re-enroll in the future after retirement.
To continue your CalPERS health benefit coverage after retirement, you must meet both of the criteria below:
- Be enrolled in a CalPERS health plan upon separation from employment, either in your own name or as a dependent
- Retire within 120 days of your separation from employment
If you don’t meet both requirements before you retire, you’ll lose all future rights to be in the CalPERS Health Program. If your family members are included in your CalPERS health plan at the time of your death, their enrollment will continue automatically if they’re eligible for and receive a monthly allowance.
Public Agency or School Members
If your employer doesn’t contract with CalPERS for health benefits, contact your employer to determine if your benefits will continue.
To continue dental coverage into retirement, you must:
- Be enrolled in a state-sponsored dental plan on the date of your separation from employment
- Retire within 120 days of your separation
If you’re enrolled in CalPERS Long-Term Care and have premiums deducted from your paycheck, you’ll need to call 982-1775 before you retire to find out how to continue your premium deductions.

The Va Deemed Me Disabled So I Must Qualify
Certainly, a high percentage-rating ascribed by the Department of Veterans Affairs of even one of unemployability can be a persuasive piece of evidence in support of a Federal Disability Retirement application, and should be used as further proof in applying for the benefit.

Alternatives To Early Retirement From The Federal Government
I just spent the last section of this post describing all of the reasons I would be silly to retire early.
On the other hand, I am drawn to the siren song of being able to structure my own days. Being in complete control of my time to work on passion projects is a dream of mine.

What Happens When You Resign From Federal Service
Withdrawal, Transfer or Termination: If you leave Federal service you will receive a total of any unused vacation, not sick leave. If you switch to another federal agency, your annual and annual illness will be changed.
Can I leave federal service and come back?
If you are leaving your Federal job and want to repay your retirement contribution, you can get the application from your staff office, fill it out, and return it to them.
What happens to leave when you leave federal service?
An employee who is disqualified from federal service for one day or more of work is entitled to pay, in total, for all unused vacation time accumulated through the full pay period of finally before separation.

Other Requirements For Fers Benefits
Like many long-term disability policies, the federal disability retirement program requires you to apply for Social Security disability benefits . If you are approved for Social Security, the amount of your SSDI benefits will be subtracted from your FERS benefits. For the first year that you get SSDI, there is a 100% offset and each following year, an offset of 60% . But because it’s substantially easier to be approved for federal disability retirement than Social Security disability, it is common for a person to qualify for the former but be denied the latter.
Can you work while receiving disability retirement? Yes, as long as you’re working in the private sector and not earning more than 80% of your federal salary. This amount includes only earned income, not income from investments or rental properties. The same is not true for Social Security disability.

When To Retire From Federal Service
When is the best time to retire from the Federal Governments workforce? On Dec. 31st, probably.
It is relatively easier for a CSRS employee to pick their retirement date than a FERS one, but CSRS workers are now less than 4% of the federal workforce. For them, all they have is their pension to keep track of while those under FERS have to coordinate their pension, TSP, and social security benefits. With CSRS, it is more clear-cut: the end of the leave year is the most logical date to retire. This is when they can carry over a maximum of 240 hours of leave from the prior year. For CSRS, that date is January 3rd, 2022. The end of the leave year is also a reasonable time for a FERS retiree to stop working. The date for FERS is the actual end of the year: New Years Eve 2021. This is considered common knowledge, which can be seen in the uptick of claims for retirement benefits each December, creating the massive backlog at OPM.
For a CSRS employee with 30 to 40 years of service, picking the right date can be crucial when calculating retirement benefit amounts. In contrast, a FERS employee with only a decade or less of service may face fewer drastic implications based off what exact date they stop working.
