Psst Want To Buy Some Surplus Land Utahs Transportation Department Has So Much It Doesnt Have A Full Inventory Yet

The Utah Department of Transportation is seeking to sell surplus land, raising millions of dollars it can spend on other road projects. The department is starting by identifying plots along major highways.

Utah would like to sell surplus land scattered around the state. Trouble is, it isnt sure where all of it is exactly. And it hasnt had much success in getting the public to take a look at what may be hundreds of millions of dollars worth of land.

These parcels were initially purchased for highway projects, often through condemnation. But not all of it was used. So, it has sat vacant, growing weeds, for perhaps decades.

The state realized it had the equivalent of valuable golden nuggets scattered along its highways so the Legislature last year approved $500,000 to start to inventory it, find any water rights, develop legal descriptions and auction it off.

Shane Marshall, deputy director of the Utah Department of Transportation, reported Tuesday that in the first year UDOT raised $19.3 million by selling 81 parcels.

So out of that $500,000 investment, we put $19 million back into the fund for future highway projects, he told a legislative committee Tuesday.

He estimated the state is still three to five years away from identifying all the surplus property it owns.

It is a very labor-intensive process, he said. The state is focusing its efforts along urban highway corridors where the values are likely the highest.

Zillow has ranked the real estate market in Utah at a 10 on 10 which indicates a very healthy market. Though the prices of properties in Utah is on the rise and the supply in comparison with the demand is low, Utah is still considered a great place for buying a property. The housing supply has seen a shortage and the higher wages are still not enough to buy a property there. With the population increasing and fewer properties, it is a great yet tough market to break into. Salt Lake City is the most expensive real estate ground followed by Park City, Highland, Alpine, Bluffdale, and Draper.

    The Beginning Of Homesteading Land

Philosophically, the idea of homesteading something refers to taking something that is essentially unowned, and doing something to it to render it yours. This could be branding livestock, diverting water in a river, or perhaps copyrighting or patenting ideas.

The concept of homestead land and houses originated in 1862. It started with the Homestead Act, issued by the federal government. It was basically a way that people could take private ownership over public land. In other words free land! The requirements were that you had to be at least 21, willing to live on the homestead for at least 5 years, and improve the land. Folks who agreed to these terms were granted 160 acres to homestead. The government issued these grants as part of an effort to begin to settle the more remote areas of the American West.

Tips For Participating In Government Auctions

    • The general rule for auctions is that the highest bidder wins, and cancellation is not possible. Check with the auction site ahead of time to find out if you can cancel a bid.

    • Each auction website operates differently. In some cases, the government agency itself runs the auctions. In other cases, the agency operates the shopping site, but a third-party company handles the auction itself.

    • Find out what forms of payment auctions accept. There is no uniform payment policy across all the different auctions. Some auctions accept credit card payments or personal checks. Others, such as the Internal Revenue Service , dont accept either of these. Most auctions accept cashiers checks.

    • For real estate auctions, you may need to work with a broker or real estate agent to bid or make the purchase. Also, for real estate auctions, find out if financing is permitted. Many times it is not and the full purchase price is due when you win the bid.
