How Can You Renew The Free Government Telephone Service
The free government phone service for Lifeline customers must be renewed every year. As part of this process, you are verified as still being an eligible Lifeline member, thus qualifying for government financial assistance. You can avoid being disconnected when you renew your service and continue to receive free service.
Vendor-specific renewal processes may differ, but all are similar to the TruConnect renewal process outlined below. You will receive a renewal form from your Lifeline service provider 105 days before your contract expires. On the first page of the renewal form, you will find a pink envelope with your personal identification number . By phone, mail, or online, you can renew your service using your PIN. Follow the instructions provided by your providers customer service team when you contact them via your Lifeline phone. Fill out and sign the form, then mail it along with your PIN to the providers address. On the Internet, you can also download the renewal form for your provider. Upon renewal, you will receive a letter confirming your renewal.

App Caused Financial Losses To Users
The infection came to light last summer, when Upstream, a UK-based mobile security firm, discovered suspicious traffic originating from the smartphones of some of its customers.
In a report published this week and shared with ZDNet, the company says it initially detected that the app was harvesting users data and sending it to a server in China. The app collected geographic locations, email addresses, and IMEI codes, which it sent back to TCL.
But this weather app isnt the only suspicious app with intrusive permissions that collects data and sends it back to China. There are plenty of those around already.
Upstream devs also found that in certain regions, the malicious code hidden inside the app would also attempt to subscribe users to premium phone numbers that incurred large charges on users phone bills.
All in all, the company says it detected and blocked over 27 million transaction attempts across seven markets, which would have created losses of around $1.5 million to phone owners if they hadnt been blocked.
On top of these transactions, Upstream devs also spotted adware-like behavior that originated from an infected phone theyve purchased from its former owner.
The weather app, which ran in the phones background, also started hidden browser windows that loaded web pages and clicked on ads. We recorded 50MB to 250MB of data per day being consumed by the applications unwanted activity, researchers said.

Not Just Malicious But Pre
In October 2019, we saw several complaints in our support system from users with a government-issued phone reporting that some of its pre-installed apps were malicious. We purchased a UMX U683CL to better assist our customers and verify their claims.
We informed Assurance Wireless of our findings and asked them point blank why a US-funded mobile carrier is selling a mobile device infected with pre-installed malware? After giving them adequate time to respond, we unfortunately never heard back. Heres what we discovered.
The first questionable app found on the UMX U683CL poses as an updater named Wireless Update. Yes, it is capable of updating the mobile device. In fact, its the only way to update the mobile devices operating system . Conversely, it is also capable of auto-installing apps without user consent.
Thus, we detect this app as Android/PUP.Riskware.Autoins.Fota.fbcvd, a detection name that should sound familiar to Malwarebytes for Android customers. Thats because the app is actually a variant of Adups, a China-based company caught collecting user data, creating backdoors for mobile devices and, yes, developing auto-installers.

How To Change Lifeline Companies
All Lifeline providers are not the same. You may want to switch providers because you do not like the current service, you need a phone upgrade, you want more voice minutes and text messages, or your Lifeline operator may have left the Lifeline Assistance initiative. Link-Up services dont lock subscribers into yearly contracts. If you are getting poor customer service, the first thing you can do is to launch a complaint with the FCC. And if the situation doesnt improve, then you can even change your cell phone provider.
Most customers believe that they must first end their service with the current operator before joining a new carrier. But the Universal Service Administrative Company has a different approach to a Benefit Transfer or switching Lifeline providers. The USAC allows you to change cell phone companies if you have been on the service for a minimum of 60 days. The best thing is to ensure you cancel your previous provider to avoid being on multiple Lifeline services as it might lead to termination of your benefits.
Here is what you can do to switch Lifeline wireless providers:

Nsns Provision Of Intercept Capability To Iran
In 2008, Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture between Nokia and Siemens AG, reportedly provided Irans monopoly telecom company with technology that allowed it to intercept the Internet communications of its citizens. The technology reportedly allowed Iran to use deep packet inspection to read and change the content of emails, social media, and online phone calls. The technology enables authorities to not only block communication but to monitor it to gather information about individuals, as well as alter it for disinformation purposes.
During the post-election protests in Iran in June 2009, Irans Internet access was reported to have slowed to less than a tenth of its normal speeds, which experts suspected was due to using of deep packet inspection.
In July 2009, Nokia began to experience a boycott of their products and services in Iran. The boycott was led by consumers sympathetic to the post-election protest movement and targeted companies deemed to be collaborating with the regime. Demand for handsets fell and users began shunning SMS messaging.
Nokia Siemens Networks asserted in a press release that it provided Iran only with a lawful intercept capability solely for monitoring of local voice calls and that it has not provided any deep packet inspection, web censorship, or Internet filtering capability to Iran.
