Ncai Offers $140k Grants To Native

Details

The National Congress of American Indians is offering a $140,000 grant program aimed at shoring up Native-owned small businesses adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington, D.C.-based NCAI is seeking applications for 28 business stabilization grants worth $5,000 apiece. Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate how their businesses have been curtailed because of the pandemic.

The funding can be used for a range of activities to address urgent needs in the business, such as paying existing small business loans, keeping people employed and paying vendors.

As well, NCAI said the funding can be used to improve the resilience of the business, such as purchasing equipment or software that will allow the owners to transition their companies to take advantage of e-commerce channels, which have become increasingly important given various state-level restrictions on in-person contact to address the spread of COVID-19.

Native-owned small businesses serve as the lifeblood of many tribal communities across the country, providing critical jobs and income to tribal citizens and their families while at the same time enriching the quality of community life by providing goods and services to local residents and the public at-large, according to the NCAI request for applications for the grant.

The organization credited financial support from Google.org for making the grants possible.

NCAI will accept applications on a rolling basis until all funds are exhausted.

Shuttered Venue Operators Grant

Eligible venues include live venue operators or promoters, live performing arts organization operators, theatrical producers, relevant museum operators, zoos and aquariums who meet specific criteria, motion picture theater operators and talent representatives.

Applicants may be eligible for grant amounts that equal to 45% of their gross earned revenue, up to a maximum of $10 million. The SBA will start accepting applications for this grant on April 8, 2021, through their SVOG portal.

Are You A Federally Recognized Tribe Looking To Establish Or Expand A Business Learn How A Nabdi Grant Can Help You Explore Opportunities

Every year, our Native American Business Development Institute offers the opportunity for tribes to receive funding to hire consultants to conduct feasibility studies on the viability of a business, technology, or economic development project.

For 2021, we plan to award 20-35 grants. There is no minimum or maximum amount of funding that can be requested, but most awards range in value from $25,000 to $75,000.

All NABDI projects must be completed within one year unless a no-cost extension is provided by the awarding official.

NABDI grants are discretionary and go through a competitive evaluation process. They are not self-determination/638 contracts that are awarded through the Public Law 93-638 process and give a tribe authority over programs operated by the federal government for the tribes benefit.

The Best Resources For Indigenous American Entrepreneurs

Are you ready to discover your MBA program?

Entrepreneurs create new business opportunities for themselves and their communities. According to the most recent census, Indigenous Americans comprise 2.09% of the United States population. Comparatively, Indigenous Americans own and operate nearly 6% of all U.S. businesses, approximately 24,430 across the country.

Some unique difficulties may hinder Indigenous American entrepreneurs from opening small businesses. Indigenous entrepreneurs receive fewer opportunities to access funding, land, and business mentorship support from national and local institutions. Many organizations nonprofit, Native-led, and federal work to advance Indigenous entrepreneurs through financial, educational, and networking opportunities.

Indigenous-led and centered organizations provide additional funding opportunities specifically for Indigenous entrepreneurs.

While Indigenous entrepreneurs can purchase or lease land for business development across the United States, the low rates of such access highlights the underrepresentation of Indigenous entrepreneurs obtaining this land. Additionally, limited property rights for tribal lands restrict access to Indigenous land for new business ventures within the cultural community.

The following sections use each organizations preferred language for describing origin, tribal affiliation, and location.

These applications are accepted annually through a state or local RBEG office. Deadlines for application submission vary by state.
