How To Apply For The Women Entrepreneurship Fund

Top Grants For Women Owned Business

To get started with the Women Entrepreneurship Fund application process, eligible women-owned or led businesses must develop a comprehensive application package that confirms eligibility and provides greater perspective on the projects expected outcomes. Companies may submit an application during an open intake period, which typically remains open for one month before closing to assess the applications received during that time.

While WEFs first application intake period closed November 15, another intake is expected in early 2019. Start planning your application now to be ready when it opens.

Businesses may only submit one application for funding consideration if you applied during a previous intake period then it is very unlikely a future application will receive approval. If this is the case for your business, there are other business expansion funding programs available.

To discuss your eligibility for the Women Entrepreneurship Fund and learn how to optimize the funding application process, please contact Mentor Works.

How To Find Small Business Grants For Women

Although every small business grant is unique and has its own set of requirements, there are a few general steps you can follow to identify and apply for the grants that are most applicable to your business:

  • Do your research. Check out online portals like Grants.gov to identify grants that could be a good fit for your business. Attending small business conferences and chatting with peers in the industry can also be a great way to learn about small business grant opportunities that arent widely advertised.
  • Check your eligibility. Most grants have specific eligibility requirements. These rules can relate to demographic, education level, the age of your business, and other factors. Paying attention to these requirements could save you from spending time applying for a grant that might not be the right fit.
  • Apply on time. Block off time in your weekly or monthly schedule to apply for grants for your business. Although it can feel tough to find time to squeeze in applications, the payoff for winning financing for your startup can be huge. Make sure you apply on time to make your application stand out from the pack.
  • Track your applications. Creating a spreadsheet of the grants you have applied for and any upcoming deadlines is a great way to stay organized and motivated throughout the process.
  • Watch out for scams. Beware grantors that ask you to pay a large sum or sign up for some kind of subscription to access small business grants for women.

What Makes Grants Tricky

One problem with grants is that the funds are often earmarked for very specific uses. So if you get a grant for a project, you have to use the money on only that project, even if you have other needs. In comparison, something like a business line of credit offers much more flexibility.

Another issue is that grants are very, very competitive. Everyone wants free money, after all. So youre competing with loads of other women business owners as you try to get a grant. And with all that competition, you have no way of knowing whether or not youll actually get the grant. In contrast, business loans usually have clear criteria that make it possible to predict whether or not youll get approved.

Put simply, you cannot count on getting grant funding for your business. You should be pleasantly surprised if you get one and not hopelessly disappointed if you dont.

Even with those drawbacks, we still really like grants. And luckily, you can improve your odds a bit by finding local or otherwise hyper-specific grants.
