You can also get your credit reports by phone by calling 1-877-322-8228. Under North Carolina law, credit monitoring services are required to tell you how you can get credit reports for free.

You Have More Than One Credit Report

When you order your free TransUnion credit report, youll also have the option to order your free Equifax and Experian credit reports. The information in these reports can differ, so its good practice to review all three. For example, some lenders choose to report account data to only one or two credit reporting agencies, not all three. Or, when you apply for a loan, a lender may only pull your credit report from one credit reporting agency, which would result in a hard inquiry on your credit report from that agency only.

  • Accounts that arent yours or you didnt authorize.

  • Incorrect, negative information.

  • Negative information thats too old to be included. Most negative information, other than one type of bankruptcy, should be excluded after seven years.

These errors have the potential to hurt your credit score, says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney with the National Consumer Law Center. You might see other types of errors, such as out-of-date employment information, she says, but those arent factored into your score.

If you find errors, dispute them. The credit bureaus will investigate and must remove information that they cant verify.

Specialty Consumer Reporting Agencies

Specialty consumer reporting agencies prepare reports on consumers’ histories for specific purposes. The reports cover employment, insurance claims, residential rentals, check writing, and medical records. Think about ordering a specialty report if you are ready to buy homeowners or automobile insurance, open a checking account, apply for private health or life insurance, or rent a home or apartment.

Property Insurance Claim Reports: Insurance companies often check reports of this kind when you apply for homeowners or automobile insurance. One of these reports is the CLUE report .2 CLUE reports contain information on property loss claims against homeowner’s insurance and automobile insurance policies. A CLUE report contains personal information, such as your name, birth date, and Social Security number. It also contains a record of any auto or homeowner property loss claims you submitted to an insurance company. It includes the type of loss, date of the loss, and amount paid by the insurance company. It lists inquiries, or companies that have checked your claim history.

Another property loss report is called A-PLUS . The A-PLUS database is compiled by a smaller company and is less commonly used than the CLUE database. You may order a CLUE report and an A-PLUS for free once every 12 months.

Tenant History Reports: Landlords sometimes check your tenant history as well as your credit history. You may order a free copy of your tenant history report once every 12 months.

What Information Do I Have To Give

To keep your account and information secure, the credit bureaus have a process to verify your identity. Be prepared to give your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. If youve moved in the last two years, you may have to give your previous address. Theyll ask you some questions that only you would know, like the amount of your monthly mortgage payment. You must answer these questions for each credit bureau, even if youre asking for your credit reports from each credit bureau at the same time. Each credit bureau may ask you for different information because the information each has in your file may come from different sources.

How Do I Fix Inaccuracies On My Credit Report

If you see something on your report that you believe is inaccurate, it may be a good idea to contact the business that reported the account, as they are the ones who can provide you more details. Your other option is to start a dispute with the credit reporting agency that issued the credit report. To start a dispute with TransUnion, visit transunion.com/disputeonline and well start an investigation.

Fixing Errors In A Credit Report

Anyone who denies you credit, housing, insurance, or a job because of a credit report must give you the name, address, and telephone number of the credit reporting agency that provided the report. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act , you have the right to request a free report within 60 days if a company denies you credit based on the report.

You can get your credit report fixed if it contains inaccurate or incomplete information:

  • Contact both the credit reporting agency and the company that provided the information to the CRA.
  • Tell the CRA, in writing, what information you believe is inaccurate. Keep a copy of all correspondence.

Some companies may promise to repair or fix your credit for an upfront fee–but there is no way to remove negative information in your credit report if it is accurate.

What Is Credit Monitoring

AnnualCreditReport.com – Rock Jingle | Federal Trade Commission

Canadas credit bureaus, as well as many credit card issuers and financial institutions, offer credit monitoring services. These services provide you with a notification after certain updates to your credit file, such as a credit inquiry.

You could consider using this service if you think youve been the victim of fraud or if you have been affected by a data breach. This can help you see if somebody is trying to apply for credit in your name.

How To Review Your Credit Reports

To check your reports for errors or possible signs of identity theft, look especially at three areas.

  • Look in the Personal Information or Personal Data section. Look for addresses where you’ve never lived. Make sure your name and any variations of it, your Social Security number, and your employers are correct
  • Look in the Accounts sections. Look for any accounts you didn’t open. Look for balances on your legitimate accounts that are higher than you expect.
  • Look for Inquiries or Requests for Your Credit History that you didn’t make. There are two types of inquiries. “Regular” or “hard” inquiries are the ones that result when you apply for credit or when an account is transferred to a collection agency. This is the kind of inquiry you should check as possible identity theft or error. The other type, “promotional” or “soft” inquiries, would not be an indication of problems. This type includes pre-approved credit offers, checks for employment purposes, account monitoring by your existing creditors, and your own requests for your report.
  • You can view sample credit reports, with the different sections explained, on the Web sites of the three credit bureaus: experian.com, transunion.com, equifax.com/home/en_us.

Repeat The Process At Regular Intervals

Once you know how to request and read your credit report, it’s crucial to repeat the above steps at regular intervals in order to continuously monitor the state of your credit. In addition to giving you a means of tracking how your credit is growing, this practice will also enable you to better keep an eye out for potential problems or mistakes. As previously mentioned, this can easily be achieved by spacing out your free annual credit report from each of the three major credit reporting companies throughout the year.
