Spokane Federal Credit Union started in 1956 when seven volunteers stepped up to serve the financial needs of their fellow federal government employees. In response to the government shutdown 63 years later, the Washington-based credit union stepped up once again to support their members and the community.

It is at the very core of our mission to support our members and be available to them in times of personal growth and in times of need, said Spokane Federal President and CEO Charlotte Nemec. Spokane Federal Credit Union is committed to being a strong community partner and appreciates our local, federal employees.

To help those members access cash, the credit union developed the LifeLine Loan for an amount up to the amount of their regular monthly net check. The loan was available to all federal employees who did not receive a paycheck due to the shutdown, even those who werent a member of Spokane Federal. In total, the credit union booked 48 Life Loans, 13 skip-a-payments, three interest-only loans, and opened 30 new memberships.

A similar story played out in credit unions across the Northwest. A Credit Union National Association survey revealed how Northwest credit unions joined the effort, with many offering low or no-interest loans, payroll advances, or individualized financial solutions.

While some credit unions are limited to certain employers, types of workers or geographic areas, in general, quite a few credit unions are open to any members and will be happy to have you join. Some credit unions are digital-first and have a nationwide membership base. Local Government Federal Credit Union is known for its commitment to serving its members in North Carolina, especially through the credit unions nonprofit lending program. Over the past few years, however, LGFCU came to realize their credit and lending processes were not optimized for efficiency or member experience. All processes supporting the life of the loan were manual. Lenders and management wasted time tracking down and organizing documents and spreadsheets since multiple staffers were involved. Data had to be repeatedly entered, and tracking loans through the pipeline required telephone tag and emails to colleagues. Of even more concern to the credit union was the member experience: borrowers were required to mail, physically deliver or email documents, and they waited up to a full week to hear back on a loan decision.

Step 1: Before you get started, make sure you have your 16-digit debit card number and three-digit 24-Hour Voice Response Service PIN handy. If you dont have or are unsure of either of those, call 888.732.8562.

Step 2: Complete the Member Connect online form. Enter your 16-digit ATM/Debit Card number. You will be able to create a new and unique User ID once you are enrolled.

Step 3: Enter your three-digit 24-Hour Voice Response Service PIN. You will be asked to choose a new password.
