Some of these grant programs are funded at the federal level but administered through state or local governmental agencies in every state. Californians looking to repair various systems in their home, or even those homeowners who want to try and add a little property value, may be able to benefit from some publicly funded grant or loan programs.

What Is A Secondary Suite

A secondary suite is defined as a separate space with its own entrance, bathroom, and kitchen facilities. It must have all parts of a home that make it whole.

While it might be attached to a primary and detached household, either on the side or as a basement, it still functions as an independent unit. And that is the purpose of the secondary suite: independence.

Many municipalities across the country are encouraging people to build secondary suites to help with the population growth and migration to certain cities throughout the country. For those of you whove been thinking of building their very own secondary suite, there are SO many discounts available. Even the federal government has a program, so if you claim First Nations status, youre in luck!

Keep Project Costs Affordable

Although grants and other forms of financial assistance can ease the economic burden of home renovation, they may not cover all project costs.

To keep project costs affordable, there are some tips senior citizens should keep in mind.

  • Ask about affordability of materials. Ask the contractor if the work would be less expensive with other materials. A wheelchair ramp might be less expensive in another type of material.
  • Check on equipment costs. If a contractor must use an unusual piece of equipment in the renovation, 100% utilization is equal to 22 days or 176 hours. If your project will take significantly less than that, its cheaper to rent the equipment.Get multiple estimates. Get estimates on any renovation project from at least three contractors. Prices can vary from place to place, and each will give you more information on the pricing on the project.

Renovations can be very expensive, and that can be a problem for people on a fixed income, as many seniors are, but financial help to make necessary renovations is possible. A number of organizations offer grants for those looking for home renovations to keep up with growing needs, here are some ways to get help.

“Updated hardwood floors or new carpeting can help sell a home,” said John Bodrozic, co-founder of digital home management tool HomeZada. “But a lot of the determination of whether the project pays for itself depends on how much money people put into the project.”

According to HomeAdvisor, existing carpets can be cleaned for about $174, and the average hardwood refinishing cost is $1.50 to $4 per square foot. Installation of new flooring increases the cost: $1,583 for carpet and $4,397 for wood. However, you can reduce these sums.

“If you have the skill or are willing to learn, you can save labor costs if you can do some of the work yourself,” said Bodrozic. “If you do hire a contractor, make sure you get three to five bids and make it known to the contractors that they are competing for the business. Depending on the marketing conditions and timing of your project, you could save yourself some money.”

What Problems Are Solved With Homeowner Renovation Assistance

Government funded renovation programs help to reduce the negative effects of home deterioration. In many cases, unless something is done the deterioration of a single home can affect an entire neighborhood. Specially targeted programs can help to preserve and revitalize neighborhoods. A renovation assistance program can also be used by a community to achieve its individual goals. Every community has its own goals and they may not always be the same as the goals for the state and county governments.
