One of the most important steps to take would be having your doctor supply sufficient evidence that explains in detail your symptoms and impairments and how they affect your ability to work. The claims made by your doctor on your CPP Disability application must be backed with medically acceptable clinical diagnostic techniques. The more your doctor elaborates on their claim that you are incapable of retaining gainful employment, the more likely a CPP Disability adjudicator will accept it.
While a medical report is crucial, it is only the beginning step in building your CPP Disability case. You will need to collect as much medical evidence as you can surrounding your impairment, all of which should highlight the severity and prolonged nature of your impairment. Medical reports are often the cause for approval, but only in cases that make it very clear that your condition is severe and prolonged.

When Can A Stroke Patient Begin Rehabilitation
Rehabilitative therapy typically begins in the acute-care hospital once the condition has stabilized, often within 48 hours after the stroke. The first steps often involve promoting independent movement to overcome any paralysis or weakness. A therapist will help with assisted or self-performed range of motion exercises to strengthen and increase mobility in stroke-impaired limbs. A stroke victim may need to learn how to sit up and move between the bed and a chair to standing and walking, with or without assistance. Beginning to reacquire the ability to carry out basic activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and using a toilet, represents the first stage in the return to independence.
Is There Government Assistance For Stroke Victims
If you have suffered a stroke, you are able to get government assistance if your condition is so severe that you will be out of work for at least 12 months or more.
The main government assistance you will most likely receive as a stroke victim is Social Security Disability Insurance . SSDI benefits are paid out to those who at one point could work, but now can no longer because of a disability.
Since strokes usually happen to individuals who are much older, they are more likely to qualify for SSDI, rather than SSI benefits because they have been able to work and earn a living before the stroke.
When you are on SSDI benefits, the other government assistance you get is Medicare. Medicare is federal insurance to those with disabilities, as well as those 65 and older.
When you are on SSDI, you are eligible to receive Medicare at a 24-month qualifying period. Those are the two main government assistance programs for stroke victims.

Financial Changes After A Stroke

You dont have to be related to or live with the person you care for to claim, but you must be over the age of 16 and the person you care for has to be receiving AA, DLA or PIP.
If you cant visit the person due to coronavirus or social distancing measures, you can still receive Carers Allowance while giving care remotely. This includes emotional support over the phone or online.
Carers Allowance is not means-tested, but you can only claim if you earn less than £128 a week from paid work, after tax and your expenses for caring have been taken off.

Extra Funding For Stroke Patients
The government has revealed plans for a massive cash injection to improve community-based service for people living with the after-effects of a stroke
Over the next three years, the Department of Health will distribute £77m across the country to improve services for stroke patients. Many people who are discharged from hospital after being treated for a stroke can face isolation and poor access to continued support, and experience a diminished quality of life.
Around 900,000 people in England have suffered a stroke and live with the consequences, which can often take the form of severe disability and paralyses. The government funding will help improve the long-term support available for 300,000 patients with moderate to severe effects of a stroke.
“All too often stroke survivors tell us that their transition from hospital back into the community was daunting and disorganised with poor links between health and social services,” said Jon Barrick, chief executive of the Stroke Association. “We hope to see a vital increase in specialist and voluntary sector stroke expertise in the community.”
Health minister, Ann Keen, described how patients are confronted with the scale of the problem when they leave hospital and often feel abandoned.
“Extra investment is so important. We know that long-term support needs to be better coordinated and local authorities have a critical role to play alongside the NHS and the voluntary sector in improving services,” she said.

Stroke Association/association Of British Neurologists Joint Clinical Research Training Fellowships
These 3-year clinical research fellowships in neurological disciplines are open to all physicians, including those interested in stroke. The fellowship can address an aspect of the causes, prevention and/or treatment of stroke, resulting in a PhD.
The remit for these clinical training fellowships differs from our wholly-funded Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Fellowship schemes. Applications are accepted which propose research across the whole stroke pathway, including basic and pre-clinical applications.

Canadian Government Provides Historic Heart & Stroke Research Funding
The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, and the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, today announced $15 million to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery. This is the largest investment ever provided to stroke recovery and rehabilitation research in Canada.
“Our government is making significant investments in science and technology to improve our quality of life and sustain economic growth today and into the future,” said Minister Flaherty. “By supporting centres of excellence like the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery we are targeting resources to areas where Canada has the potential to be a world leader or is currently leading the way.”
“The Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery is moving new discoveries from the lab to the bedside faster than ever before and is the first of its kind in the world to streamline research, stroke care, and stroke recovery,” said Minister Clement. “By continuing to make breakthrough discoveries and innovating treatments, the Centre is generating new hope for stroke survivors and their families.”
The Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery brings together three institutions – Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Baycrest, and the University of Ottawa.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery is one of seven centres that received federal funding to support its operations through the Budget 2007.
What Is Cpp Disability
The Canadian Pension Program Disability Benefit is a taxable monthly payment allotted to individuals who:
- Have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan
- Are under the age of 65
- Cannot work due to a severe disability.
To be eligible for CPP Disability, you must be under the age of 65 and are unable to continue in the workforce due to a disabling condition. CPP Disability provides a lump sum retroactive payment as well as a fixed monthly payment until you reach the age of 65.
It is important to note that you cannot receive the CPP Disability and your Canadian Pension allotment at the same time unless you receive benefits retroactively after you have turned 65. if you have just turned 65 and your disability started before 65, you may be able to apply for the CPP Disability and receive retroactive payments alongside your regular CPP benefit.

How A Life After Stroke Grant Can Help
Chris was working as a multi-media designer. As a very creative and artistic person, she enjoyed lots of hobbies, from crafting miniatures to working with wood and textiles. But in June 2018, she was struck by stroke. This resulted in significant cognitive challenges, including difficulty with concentration and memory, mobility issues, and visual impairment. And in 2019, Chris had to retire from her career on the grounds of medical ill-health.
“My days were filled with just watching grass sway,” she remembers. “I could not read or watch TV or follow conversation. Slowly this has been coming back to me, with the urge to be creative once again.”
Chris’ home, which she shares with her husband and dog, does not have sufficient room to allow her to set up her crafting materials: “I lamented to Laura, my local Stroke Association Support Coordinator, about our lack of space, and that I could no longer be creative. But Laura suggested completing an application for a Life After Stroke Grant.”
The Grant had provided a shed for Chris’ garden, which offered her the opportunity to be creative, as well as a place where she can seek solace and quiet thus impacting positively on her physical and emotional well-being. “I was elated that it had been accepted. My shed has now arrived and my whole family have come together to help erect, insulate, line and paint. I already have so many ideas that I have to write them down.”
Cpp Contribution Requirements For Cpp Disability
To qualify for CPP Disability, you must have contributed to the Canada Pension Program.
All working Canadians must pay into the CPP by law, but contributing to CPP does not automatically guarantee you will be eligible to receive the CPP Disability.
To qualify you:
- Must have been an active contributor to CPP for at least 4-6 years before your application,
- Have been an active contributor to CPP for 25 years or longer and have paid into the CPP for 3 of the previous 6 years before applying.

Nhs Lifeline For Hundreds Of Stroke Survivors
Hundreds of NHS patients have received personal, specialised care thanks to a new service set up during the coronavirus pandemic.
Stroke Connect, a partnership with the NHS and the Stroke Association provides stroke survivors with support and advice in the early days following hospital discharge, without having to leave the house.
Experts have said that the new offer is providing a lifeline during the pandemic and has helped more than 500 people to rebuild their lives after having a stroke since it launched last month.
Patients are contacted for an initial call within a few days of discharge from hospital, from a trained Stroke Association Connector, an expert in supporting people after stroke.
The connector provides reassurance, support with immediate concerns and links the stroke survivor to support they can access in the long-term as part of their recovery journey as well as signposting them to other sources of support.
A further call is offered within the month to check in on the stroke survivors progress and identify any further support needed.
Families of a stroke survivor can also opt to receive essential information on self-management, including how to look after their own health and wellbeing.
The new service complements existing rehabilitation services and life after stroke care, which has continued throughout the pandemic.
Follow up care is vital for recovery and so this new lifeline will be invaluable to support rebuilding lives after stroke.

NHS Low Income Scheme
In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland prescriptions are free for everyone. In England they are free for certain people, including those over 60 and under 16.
If you are on a low income you could get help with health costs such as prescriptions, dental care, fares to appointments, eye tests and glasses. To do this you have to apply for a certificate. Depending on your circumstances you may get a certificate that will cover all of these costs, or one that partially covers them. You do not have to be in receipt of benefits to qualify.
