What About Unemployment Benefits
Each state operates its own unemployment benefits program. Depending on your states program and requirements, you might be able to qualify for an unemployment insurance program in your state. These programs pay a cash amount if you lose your job through no fault of your own. Some states also provide extended unemployment benefits when there is high unemployment, meaning you can collect on your unemployment insurance for 13 weeks. You can apply for an extension once your regular unemployment benefits run out. Although the details for how to apply and qualify vary by state. And remember, you must report all unemployment benefits you received in a given calendar year as income when you file your taxes for that year.
In addition to unemployment benefits through your state, the federal and state government work together to provide all kinds of unemployment help and job training programs. If youve been laid off from a job, there are a number of employment and training programs run by the U.S. Department of Labor. These include retraining programs to apprenticeship programs to vocational skills programs to special programs for farm workers, refugees older Americans still in the workforce, and Native Americans. You can learn about all of these different programs and what you might be able to apply for at the U.S. Department of Labors CareerOneStop.org site.

In addition to the billions of dollars spent purchasing goods and services, the federal government also sells large amounts of natural resources and surplus property. The SBA Natural Resource Sales Assistance Program sets aside a percentage of these goods for bidding by small businesses only. In addition, federal agencies sometimes divide surplus materials into smaller parcels, making it easier for small businesses to purchase. The five categories are:
- Timber and related forest products.
- Strategic materials.
- Leases involving rights to minerals, coil, oil and gas.

Financial Help From Yourself
Instead of financial help from the government or your lenders, you may have some do-it-yourself options.
One would be a 401 loan or hardship withdrawal if you have a significant balance in your account. In general, it’s best to avoid touching your 401 before retirement, but in a serious financial crisis, it might be your only option.
For many people, pre-pandemic commuting costs were higher than they are now. One area not given a lot of attention is car insurance. If you drive less, you can likely lower your insurance costs. Contact your auto insurance company and ask what options are available to you.
On a more everyday level, you might also take another look at your spending to see if there’s anywhere you could still cut back or any major expense you might put off, at least for the time being.

Financial Assistance For Individuals
Congress passed several bills to address the financial fallout of the COVID-19 crisis. The first one was the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act , which was passed in March 2020 and signed by President Donald Trump. This law included a direct $1,200 payment for qualifying individuals.
An additional direct stimulus payment of $600 was included in the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021, which was signed into law by President Trump in December 2020.
A third stimulus check of $1,400 to qualifying adults and each of their dependents was authorized through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 11, 2021.
The act also included an extension of unemployment benefits and a continuance of eviction and foreclosure moratoriums through July 31, 2021. A subsequent order by the CDC extended the July 31, 2021 eviction moratorium to Oct. 3, 2021, but was struck down by the Supreme Court on Aug. 26, 2021. Foreclosures, though, were not impacted by the latest CDC or Supreme Court actions.
President Biden also extended payment deferments on most federal student loans through at least Sept. 30, 2021. The deadline for student loan payments, interest, and collection activity was extended by the Department of Education until May 1, 2022.
You can check on the status of your stimulus check through the IRS’ Get My Payment portal.

Ndp Leader Jagmeet Singh Is Confident His Party Can Secure The Social Programs And Other Policies That Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Has Promised To Implement
OTTAWA NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he would be willing to pull out of a new deal that props up the Liberal minority government for the next three years, but that he is confident his party can secure the social programs and other policies Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised to implement in their accord.
Were not going to let the Liberal government off the hook, Singh told reporters near Parliament Hill on Tuesday, shortly after details of the Liberal-NDP deal were published.
Despite campaigning in the past two elections with rhetoric that attacked Trudeau as untrustworthy and beholden to corporate interests, Singh said he has faith the Liberals will abide by the deal, which is now a public document that Singh described as a new tool for New Democrats to secure their policy priorities in Canadas minority Parliament.
And if the government doesnt follow through with what it agreed to, Singh said he is willing to drop out of the accord.
Were going into this eyes wide open, he said. If they fall short the deal doesnt continue.
Asked about how his NDP caucus reacted to the deal, Singh said some MPs were enthusiastic, while others raised concerns about whether they would still be able to hold the government to account.
It also wont stop the NDP from opposing government measures the party disagrees with, including hypothetical back-to-work legislation for striking workers.

What Will Disqualify Me From Getting A Health Insurance Subsidy
You wont qualify for a health insurance subsidy if you can get affordable health insurance by other means. For example, if you could get affordable health insurance through your job, but youd rather have a health plan purchased through your health insurance exchange, you wont qualify for a subsidy.
The law makes an exception about this if the health insurance your employer offers is lousy, or if the coverage isnt affordable:
- The Affordable Care Act defines “affordable” as health insurance that costs you less than 9.83% of your income in 2021 .
- If the health coverage available through your job doesnt provide minimum value, then it wont disqualify you from getting a subsidy just because its available. For a plan to provide minimum value, it has to pay an average of 60% of covered costs, and include “substantial” coverage for inpatient and physician care.
However, if you choose to enroll in employer-offered health insurance even though its not affordable or doesnt provide minimum value, then you wont be eligible for a subsidy as long as youre enrolled in the employer’s health plan. The government isnt going to give you help paying for health insurance if you already have job-based health insurance.
You wont qualify for a subsidy if youre enrolled in government-sponsored health insurance such as the Childrens Health Insurance Program, the Veterans Administration, Medicaid, or Medicare .
