Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Coverage

Blue Cross Blue Shield dental coverage is available through either a standalone dental plan that may be added to a health insurance plan or through a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part C, covers the same benefits as Original Medicare while typically also offering some additional coverage for things not included under Original Medicare. Dental care, along with vision care and prescription drug coverage, is among the most common extra benefits found in Medicare Advantage plans.

Blue Cross Blue Shield dental coverage may vary by plan, but common benefits include:

  • Exams
  • Orthodontics
  • Oral surgery

Preventive dental care is often covered in full. Some plans may offer a yearly allowance to put toward preventive care or other dental services.

Standalone dental plans may be a good option for those who have a health insurance plan that does not include any dental coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are popular among Medicare beneficiaries, as Original Medicare does not cover routine dental services and only offers very limited dental coverage at all.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Fined $339000 Amid Dispute With Springfield Clinic

Springfield Clinic Decatur, 250 W. Kenwood Ave., is shown.

SPRINGFIELD Health Care Service Corporation, the parent company of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, was fined $339,000 by the Illinois Department of Insurance on Monday, a striking development in the insurer’s ongoing contract dispute with Springfield Clinic.

The department found that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, the state’s largest health insurance company, violated the state’s Network Adequacy and Transparency Act when it did not properly file updated network adequacy filings following the termination of its contract with Springfield Clinic.

According to the department, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois submitted adequacy filings on March 3 and March 17, 95 days and 244 days late, respectively.

The company will have to pay $1,000 per late day, or $339,000. The payment is due in 10 days, though the insurer will have the option to appeal.

This fine should serve as notice that we will require insurers to maintain adequate provider networks and uphold all consumer protections under the law,” said Gov. J.B. Pritzker in a press release.

The fine comes following a series of WCIA-TV reports on the dispute, one of which revealed that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois never notified state regulators about the “material change” in its network.

And residents across the region are often referred to the clinic’s more than 80 specialists.

Using Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Providers

The Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers that are accessible to you may depend on the type of Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in which you are enrolled.

  • An HMO plan will typically restrict you to seeing the dental providers that participate in the plan. If you visit a dental provider who is not part of your plan, you are unlikely to receive any coverage.
  • A PPO plan can give you a little more freedom to visit dental providers outside of the plans network. You will maximize your savings by staying inside the network, but you may still have some of your care covered if received outside of the network.

Finding Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Providers

Blue Cross Blue Shield plan members and people who are shopping for a BCBS or other Anthem Medicare Advantage plan can use an online Find a Doctor search tool to find participating dental providers.

Youll be asked to enter a zip code and to select your plan. If you are not currently enrolled in a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, select Browse a list of plans. Then you may choose any plan to see the list of participating dental providers covered by that plan. You may have to select more than one plan to see a complete list of Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers in your area.

Once you have selected your location and plan, you may then sort the list of Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers by name, specialty, facility name or facility type.
