How Do Federal Salaries Work
Most federal agencies use the General Schedule pay system, but note that there are other pay systems in the government as well. It can be difficult to tell where you might fit if you are unfamiliar with the various grades.

Hiring officials will review applications and decide who to interview based on agency policy. Interviews can include:

The agency will contact applicants directly to schedule the interviews. This may take some time depending on the number of applicants. In most cases, there will only be one round of interviews .

Federal Jobs For Green
There are three types of jobs in the federal government and in rare cases, permanent residents may be eligible for these jobs. Competitive service jobs are those that require applicants to compete for the position, advises USAJOBS. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for the job and go through a hiring process that often includes a written exam to find the best candidate.
In general, only U.S. citizens, plus residents of American Samoa and Swains Island, are eligible for competitive service jobs. This is an official rule set forth by Executive Order 11935, advises USAJOBS. There is an exception, however. If there are no qualified applicants, the hiring agency can request permission to hire a permanent resident if they meet the job qualifications.
Green-card holders who get competitive service jobs do face limitations. They are not eligible for promotions or assigned to another position.
