What To Expect During Your Global Entry Interview
When your Global Entry interview day arrives, be sure to arrive on time and bring:
- A print-out of your letter of conditional approval.
- Valid passport or permanent resident card.
- Evidence of residency .
Once at the facility, you may have to wait a bit if the CBP officers are busy. I waited about 15 to 20 minutes for my interview on a Friday morning at the Chicago enrollment center, but one former TPG editor didnt have to wait at all for her interview at a center in Los Angeles.
During the 10- to 15-minute interview, expect to be questioned about your application and about why you want to join the Global Entry program. The officer I spoke with, who was both friendly and professional, asked to see my conditional approval letter, passport and drivers license.
I was then asked to confirm some of the countries I had visited recently and whether Id traveled to each for business or leisure. The final step was to give my fingerprints and get my photo taken .
A few minutes later, the officer told me I was officially enrolled, and that I would receive my Global Entry card within seven to 10 days . I then received my Known Traveler Number, so I could enter it into my frequent flyer profiles and be eligible for TSA PreCheck.
Dont forget to activate your card within 30 days of receiving it, although you dont necessarily need it to pass through Global Entry kiosks at the airport, with some notable exceptions. Some CBP officers will provide actual kiosk training, but mine did not.
How Much Does Global Entry Cost
The fee to apply to become a member of Global Entry is $100. The fee is not refundable, so you are out of luck if you get denied. Like TSA PreCheck, your membership will last for five years, and the cost to renew for another five years is $100. You can also many of which provide reimbursement for the $100 application fee.
You must pay online by credit card or electronic bank transfer before completing your application. The entire process of filling out the application to receiving your Global Entry card in the mail can take as little as 3-4 weeks to as long as six months, so you should start as soon as possible before any upcoming international flights.
What Is The Global Entry Program
The program is the U.S. governments fast-track border crossing program for people traveling by air. The Global Entry pass expedites travel for predetermined low-risk citizens entering the United States from international airports. Membership is valid for 5 years. If you only fly between the U.S. and Canada, fill out the NEXUS card application. This program is perfect for frequent travelers and regular fliers who fly into the USA on a regular basis. However there is no restriction on the amount of foreign trips taken.

Suspension Of New York State Residents
New York‘s immigrant sanctuary “Green Light Law”, enacted in 2020, prohibited its state DMV from sharing criminal records with the federal Customs and Border Protection or Immigration and Customs Enforcement without a court order. New York provides driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, as over a dozen other states also do, though none of those other states placed as tight restrictions on the federal government’s access to DMV records.
In response to this law, on February 6, 2020, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would immediately prohibit New York state residents from applying for or renewing trusted traveler programs including Global Entry. This affected about 175,000 New Yorkers whose trusted traveler memberships would expire in 2020 and another 80,000 New Yorkers with pending applications. The Trump administration said it would reinstate access to the trusted traveler programs if New York state opened its DMV records to the federal government.
New York did not immediately agree to these terms. The next day, state officials promised to sue the Trump administration. They said the lawsuit would argue that “the federal government’s actions were arbitrary and capricious, did not provide state residents equal protection and violated the state’s sovereign immunity,” as The New York Times explained. New York attorney general Letitia James filed the lawsuit against CBP and DHS on February 10.

How Does Global Entry Work
When you arrive in the U.S., simply navigate to the Global Entry automated kiosks at select airports. Then scan your machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place your fingerprints on the scanner for verification and complete a customs declaration. You’ll receive a transaction receipt and be directed to baggage claim and the exit.
The CBP provides this disclaimer: “While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.”
Tips For Getting An Interview: Enrollment On Arrival
Since I recently applied for Global Entry myself, I can attest to the struggles of scheduling an appointment to satisfy the interview portion of the application.
Although I was conditionally approved the day after submitting my application online, I could not find any available appointments at any airports in my home state of Illinois or four neighboring states.
In fact, the first opening I found was at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Nov. 9, but since I am traveling abroad in October, that appointment would be too late to help with my upcoming trip. To get around this, I plan on enrolling upon arriving at OHare International Airport when I return from Singapore in October this is what DHS currently suggests for those who have been conditionally approved.
“If you are flying internationally into the US within the next 6 months we encourage you to complete your Global Entry enrollment at an Enrollment on Arrival location as an alternative to scheduling an interview at an Enrollment Center,” CBP says. “No appointment is needed and this option may offer the fastest path to membership approval for individuals with upcoming international travel.”
This process should only take a few minutes. However, you might encounter a line of other travelers waiting to interview as well, so be sure to allow extra time.
“CBP is increasing resource capacity to support the Enrollment on Arrival option,” per the CBP spokesperson.

You Can Complete Your Global Entry Upon Arrival
As mentioned, if youre having trouble booking a Global Entry interview appointment or dont live close to an enrollment center, you can enroll upon arrival at various airports within 28 U.S. states and Puerto Rico .
If open, this service allows you to complete your Global Entry enrollment interview as part of the immigration process when arriving at the airport after an international trip. In order to do this, plan to follow signs in the airport for the Enrollment on Arrival lanes and be sure your flight arrives during hours when interviews are being offered.

How Do You Know If Its Time For Global Entry Renewal
All United States Trusted Traveler program memberships like Global Entry & TSA PreCheck are good for five years from the date your membership is issued. And if you arent exactly sure when you received your membership in Global Entry, there are two quick and easy ways to figure this out.
First, you can check your Global Entry membership card which is issued to each Global Entry member. Your membership expiration date will be printed just below your birth date.
Thrifty Tip: This card also will also work as an alternative to Real ID for domestic flights starting in October.
You can also log in to your Trusted Traveler Program account on the Department of Homeland Security website. Once logged in, there will be a box on the dashboard that lists your program membership number, your program expiration date, and the date at which you are allowed to renew your membership.
You can start the renewal process up to a year before your Global Entry membership expires.
And an important note: If your renewal is in process, Global Entry members can continue using both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck for up to another year after the expiration date. Thats a generous grace period, and its up from the previous window of six months.
