How To Foil A Government Grant Scammer

Schiller provides a very helpful list of tips, some of which apply to any kind of scam:

  • “Don’t give out your bank account or personal information to strangers.
  • “Don’t blindly trust your current Facebook friends. They may have been hacked. If the message seems out of character, contact them offline.
  • “Don’t believe everything you’re told. Just because someone says they are from the ‘Federal Grants Administration,’ doesn’t mean that they are. Be aware that there may be no such agency and take time to check it out. Websites are easily spoofed and faked. *Real government websites end in ‘.gov.’
  • “Phone numbers can deceive. Con artists use spoofing to disguise ID systems. You cannot trust your caller ID.
  • “Check to see what scams are being reported in your neighborhood and also report scams and fraud whether you’ve been a victim or not.”
  • To reduce the volume of telemarketing calls you get, says Lavelle, add your phone number to the National ‘Do Not Call Registry.’ You can do so online at donotcall.gov or via phone at 1-888-382-1222.”

    Free Grants And Grant Scams

If you receive information stating you qualify for a “free grant,” it’s probably a scam. Get information from the Federal Trade Commission so you can better recognize and avoid grant scams. If you have been a victim of a grant scam, you can file a complaint with the FTC.

Contact your state consumer protection office if you have purchased a book or paid a fee to get grant information and are not satisfied.

Financial Assistance Grant To Local Government

The Australian Government will have provided over $64 billion under the Financial Assistance Grant program to local government since 197475 . The grant is provided under the Local Government Act 1995 .

The Financial Assistance Grant program consists of two components:

    • a general purpose component which is distributed between the states and territories according to population , and
    • an identified local road component which is distributed between the states and territories according to fixed historical shares.

Both components of the grant are untied in the hands of local government, allowing councils to spend the grants according to local priorities.

Local government grants commissions in each state and the Northern Territory recommend the distribution of the funding under the Financial Assistance Grant program to local governing bodies in accordance with the Act and the National Principles for allocating grants.

The Australian Capital Territory does not have a local government grants commission as the territory government provides local government services in lieu of the territory having a system of local government.

The grant is paid in quarterly instalments to state and territory governments for immediate distribution to local governing bodies.

The quantum of the grant pool changes annually in line with changes in population and the Consumer Price Index .

    Is A Fee Involved

Grant applications are usually free as they are sourced at the federal or state/county level with public funds. If you are asked to submit a fee to apply for the grant or learn more about it, theres good chance it is scam. Asking for an application fee is the number-one way scammers make their money.

Scam Alert From The Better Business Bureau

May 22, 2014 – Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota is warning the public about grant scams. Recently BBB received a report from a consumer who stated they were contacted by The Washington D.C. Grant Department about being approved for a $7,000 grant. Contacts like this are not uncommon and such notices are usually accompanied by requests to pay processing fees. BBB reminds people that federal grants are not issued for personal use, but are intended for institutions and non-profits to carry out projects with a public purpose.

“This is a scam that regrettably never goes out of vogue,” said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota. “And the people who carry it out are good at what they do they know what to say and how to say it, which is why everyone needs to be careful.”

Usually these grant “notifications” come via the phone, but people may also receive them through mail and email. These notices usually claim to be from the Federal Grants Administration or some other phony – though official-sounding – agency. Individuals who receive them are told they’re either eligible for or have been awarded a government grant.

Questions To Ask About A Legitimate Grant You Won A Legit Grantnow What

When you are the fortunate recipient of a legit U.S. grant, make sure you understand its purpose and requirements upfront.

    • What can the money be used for? Most grants are not general-purpose funds, to be used for whatever the company determines. They are for specific purposes that meet the mission of the grantor. Make sure the grantors mission and your mission are in sync.
    • What portion of the grant can be used for overhead? Grants are provided to undertake projects and activities. It takes administrative support to accomplish this, so make sure you understand what amount of the grant can be used for that.
    • What is the timing of the payments? Many grants are provided upfront, so the company has the funds in hand to pay for the work. However, some grants are paid when agreed-upon milestones are accomplished or when specific expenditures need to be reimbursed.

A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a federal agency to a recipient to carry out a public purpose of support or stimulation authorized by a law of the United States.

Waste Watch: Election Assistance Commission Federal Grants

The Waste Watch is a newsletter exposing wasteful federal government spending and brought to you by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Republicans.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress appropriated $400 million in grant funding to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the pandemic for the 2020 federal election cycle.

Unfortunately, the Election Assistance Commission has failed to conduct proper oversight over these multi-million dollar taxpayer funded grants. The failure has resulted in widespread fraud and mismanagement of taxpayer dollars.

    Lets take a closer look

For over a year, Ranking Member James Comer, House Committee on Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis, and Government Operations Subcommittee Ranking Member Jody Hice have repeatedly raised questions about the lack of oversight of federal grant funds disbursed by the EAC.

On October 13, 2020, the lawmakers called on the EAC Inspector General to investigate the misuse of election grant funds and ensure taxpayer dollars are not being used illegally after learning former California Secretary of State Alex Padilla awarded a $35 million no-bid contract to Joe Bidens main campaign advisory firm, SKD Knickerbocker, to contact voters.

On March 18, 2021, the lawmakers expressed doubt over the EACs ability to properly protect taxpayers from waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement, and requested information into the Commissions policies and procedures.
