The program was enormously popular more than 1 million people signed up in its first week, and high demand early on made it difficult to even check your eligibility. For many, though, those hiccups were worth it: In exchange, many saw discounts of up to $50 on their monthly Internet bills.
The catch? The EBB was always meant to be a temporary measure. Now, after a 60-day winding-down period, it is officially gone though not exactly forgotten. Its goals live on in the Affordable Connectivity Program , which continues to offer monthly discounts for people who qualify.
Make no mistake, though: the ACP is different from last years emergency benefit, so not everyone who signed up for a discount last year will still receive one. Heres what you need to know about the ACP, whos eligible for a price break, and how to sign up.

What You Could Get
Ontario Works offers two types of assistance:

Qualified recipients may receive help with food, housing, home energy, childcare, and job training. TANF recipients must engage in some type of work activity as defined by their state.
Each state runs its own TANF program and determines eligibility criteria. You can apply at your local county social services agency or call your state TANF office for local contact information to sign up for benefits. Qualifying for TANF does not disqualify you for other government benefits.

All federal employees hired in 1984 or later pay Social Security taxes. This includes the president, the vice president, and members of Congress. It also includes federal judges and most political appointees.
They all pay the same amount of Social Security taxes as people working in the private sector.

How Much Is The Discount
If you qualify for the program, expect to see your Internet bill decrease by $30 a month. Thats $20 a month less than what the EBB offered to most people who applied, though in some cases its still enough to effectively zero out Internet bills.
The sole exception is if you currently live on qualifying tribal lands if thats the case, you get a discount of up to $75 a month, same as under the EBB.

How Do I Find An Internet Service Provider That Participates In Acp
The list of internet service providers who participate in ACP is constantly changing. The ACP benefit website keeps a list of participating providers organized by state to make it easy to find providers near you.
If you currently have internet, check with your provider to ensure they work with ACP and honor the program. If not, you may need to cancel your existing service and sign up with a qualified provider.
If signing up for internet service for the first time with your ACP benefit, make sure to select a provider in your area that participates with ACP so that you wont experience any billing issues.
Applying For Previous Academic Years:
If you are applying for OSAP for the 2020-21 academic year, the 2020-21 OSAP applications for full-time and part-time students are also available. The deadline to apply for OSAP for micro-credential programs has now elapsed for the 2020-21 academic year.

To meet the income requirement for participation in the ACP, the total income for your household must be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines based on your household size. Be prepared to provide proof of your income, including pay stubs, tax returns, or other documentation as part of your application process.

Privately Owned Subsidized Housing
Privately owned subsidized housing includes apartment complexes that maintain a certain number of units for subsidized housing. The complex is not owned or operated by HUD. Rent is usually not completely subsidized. The complex does receive a tax credit for having tenants qualified for PHA housing or subsidies. Once you have applied at the PHA office, ask your caseworker for a list of privately owned subsidized housing options. You will need to apply directly with the complex for consideration. This is a good option for a family experiencing a temporary hardship but foresees being able to later rent from the complex without the subsidy and without having to move again.

Emergency Broadband Benefit Program
The EBB opened for enrollment on May 12, 2021, and provides a monthly discount of $50 to $75 for households that qualify. The program also grants a one-time discount of up to $100 toward a new laptop, desktop, or tablet purchased from participating providers.
Your household is eligible if at least one member meets one of the following criteria:
- Has income at or below 135% of the current Federal Poverty Level or participates in certain assistance programs, such as SNAP, Medicaid, or Lifeline.
- Is approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision in the 2020 to 2021 school year.
- Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.
- Experienced a substantial loss of income due to job loss or furlough since Feb. 29, 2020, and the household had a total income in 2020 at or below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers.
- Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating provider’s existing low-income or COVID-19 program.

The EBB program is scheduled to end six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the pandemic, or if the program runs out of funds.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, student loan payments, including principal and interest, on federally held student loans were suspended through Sept. 30, 2021, and extended again through Jan. 31, 2022. On Dec. 22, 2021, the pause on federal student loan repayments was extended for an additional 90 daysthrough May 1, 2022. However, the suspension only applies to federal student loans held by the Department of Education.

SNAP helps needy families supplement their food budget in order to move toward self-sufficiency. Eligibility is determined by individual states that administer the program. You apply in the state where you live by contacting your state agency.

In 2021, the USDA increased the average SNAP benefit nationwide by an average of $28 per person per month.
How Do I Apply For Temporary Assistance
To find out if you are eligible to receive Temporary Assistance, including help with an emergency, you need to file an application with your county Department of Social Services or, if you live in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with your local Job Center.

You can apply online at myBenefits.ny.gov or fill out the and file it at your local department of Social Services. You should identify any emergency needs you may have at this time. If you have an emergency, you will be interviewed and told in writing about the decision on your emergency the same day you apply.
For Temporary Assistance, your interview should be within seven working days of your filing an application. You should be told within 30 days of the date you filed your application if your application for Family Assistance is approved or denied, or be told within 45 days of the date you filed your application for Safety Net Assistance if your application is approved or denied.

An emergency is an urgent need or situation that has to be taken care of right away. Some examples of an emergency are:

- You have little or no food

- You do not have fuel for heating in the cold weather period
- Your utilities are shut-off or are about to be shut-off, or you have a 72-hour disconnect notice
- You or someone in your family has been physically harmed, or threatened with violence by a partner, ex-partner or other household member
If you and/or your family are experiencing an emergency situation, you may be eligible for emergency assistance. Some examples of emergency assistance include, but are not limited to:
- Payment of shelter arrears
- Payment of fuel and/or cost of fuel delivery
- Payment of Domestic Violence Shelter costs

Payments may be authorized once you are determined to be eligible for one of the following emergency programs:
Emergency Assistance to Adults – provides assistance for individuals and couples who have been determined eligible or are receiving SSI or State Supplementation Program payments.

Who Qualifies For Low
Recipients of these kind of government benefits must prove their income is below a set amount, which is some percentage of the federal poverty level. Most programs also require you to be a United States citizen or an eligible non-citizen. And many programs have state requirements based on family size and details about combined family income.
Through executive order, the Trump administration has called for the introduction of work requirements to receive some of these welfare benefits. President Trump doubled down on this concept, tying them into the 2020 fiscal budget he introduced. For now, the government agencies and departments that administer these programs are developing ways to introduce work requirements into many of these programs.
And dont forget that welfare programs are not entitlement programs by definition. Entitlement programs, like Social Security and unemployment insurance, determine eligibility based on prior contributions from payroll taxes. Welfare programs, however, are based solely on a familys income level, and thus level of need.
