Eviction Moratorium Plus Rent Relief
The CDC extension of the eviction moratorium through July 31, 2021, and targeted eviction moratorium through Oct. 3, 2021, may have played a pivotal role when combined with rent relief made available by various pieces of legislation. Even though a Supreme Court ruling effectively ended the eviction moratorium on Aug. 26, 2021.

Certain communities that received funding for emergency rental assistance directly from the federal government opted to administer their own programs. The Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program or Section 202 provides capital advances for projects that create or acquire property for low-income elderly persons. The project must help support the elderly living on the property with services like cleaning, cooking or transportation. It comes from Section 202 of the Housing Act of 1959.

The pandemic has made some state governments recognize that keeping people in their rental housing is about more than whether the tenant can pay rent. Many states are looking at ways to keep tenants from being evicted that go beyond simple rent relief.
