Government Auctions In Georgia
Many cities, counties, municipalities and state agencies are responsible for purchasing fleet vehicles for a variety of government agency needs. However, these fleet vehicles are generally only used for a few years before government departments buy new ones to replace the old fleet. These vehicles are often sold at a live government auction. Because of this process, many Georgia government auctions sell fleet vehicles that are recent makes and models with reasonable mileage and an excellent maintenance record. Keep in mind that public government auto auctions have vehicles for sale that are not military vehicles or repossessed cars.
Before attending an auction that is offering government vehicles for sale, make sure to read through these helpful tips:
Locate a government auto auction site in GA and register at that auction house in advance. It is important to familiarize yourself with the vehicle auction terms and conditions and obtain your bidder number.
Before the auction begins, scan through the government car auction catalog or run list and pinpoint the vehicles in which you are most interested. The government auction catalog lists cars in the order in which they will be sold and includes each vehicles make, model, VIN, mileage, special features and installed equipment. This auctions gov catalog, produced by the Georgia auction house, is normally available the day of the sale or on its website in an electronic format.

Check Some Vin Numbers Before Bidding
If you know the vehicles youre interested in are GSA vehicles that have come to the end of their lease you probably dont have to worry about checking the vehicle identification numbers . The government isnt going to have outstanding finance, the vehicles will obviously not be stolen, and theres no way theyre going to be two vehicles welded together.
However, if youre looking to buy a seized vehicle then you should get a VIN check before you bid, and Id recommend you use EpicVIN for a quick, affordable and comprehensive history check. The government should have done whats necessary to get the vehicle cleared for sale, but as some vehicles will have been stolen and recovered there could still be issues with finance, ownership and accident history that may be outstanding.
You can probably overcome any problems like that with a bit of work, but do you really want the hassle? If you do an EpicVIN check and something untoward comes up you really are better off moving on to the next one.

The Disappearing Taxi Market
We have found over the last few years that we tend to get more out of our assets by selling them completely decommissioned to cab companies, Syler said. He makes sure to change key locks and make the Crown Vics as presentable as possible.
However, as the Crown Vics phase out and as taxi companies lose interest in the vehicle, those days may soon be over.
Perez recalls seeing many auctioned off Crown Vic patrol vehicles as taxis around town. Since the citys transition to the PI Utility, he believes the majority of his units are going to other police departments. The citys vehicles have lower mileage than other decommissioned police cars, and theyve been well-maintained in addition, the wear and tear from police work make the vehicle interior not as attractive to taxi companies.
Taxi services were also the main purchases of used Crown Vics for the City of La Verne. However, as these companies move toward hybrids and mini wagons, were not getting as much money as we used to, Johnson said.
In the past, repeat customers would specifically look for Crown Vics from the city this isnt the case anymore. Where a vehicle used to fetch up to $3,000, itll now sell for just $1,000. Because of this, fleet staff members are not making as much of an effort to make them presentable as they did in the past, Johnson said.

Tips For Participating In Government Auctions
The general rule for auctions is that the highest bidder wins, and cancellation is not possible. Check with the auction site ahead of time to find out if you can cancel a bid.
Each auction website operates differently. In some cases, the government agency itself runs the auctions. In other cases, the agency operates the shopping site, but a third-party company handles the auction itself.
Find out what forms of payment auctions accept. There is no uniform payment policy across all the different auctions. Some auctions accept credit card payments or personal checks. Others, such as the Internal Revenue Service , don’t accept either of these. Most auctions accept cashier’s checks.
For real estate auctions, you may need to work with a broker or real estate agent to bid or make the purchase. Also, for real estate auctions, find out if financing is permitted. Many times it is not and the full purchase price is due when you win the bid.
Buying Government Vehicles Explained: Part 1
There are 2 types of government vehicles that the public can buy:
Government Fleet Vehicles
These are cars that are leased by the government on a 3-5 year term for use by government employees on the job. At the end of the lease term, the government sells the vehicles at steep discounts to the public through the Internet and auctions. The U.S. General Services Administration , a division of the federal government, is in charge of buying / leasing the cars, managing the fleet , and selling the cars. Cars for sale are listed on the GSA website at . GSA sells about 35,000 vehicles a year ranging from cars, trucks, SUVs and vans. The vehicles are generally of good quality and have been well maintained by the government. The savings could be substantial since after all the government does use our hard-earned tax dollars to acquire the vehicles and is not in the business of making a if any profit from the sales of the vehicles to the public .

Why Are Vehicles Sold At Government Auctions
Ex-government, ex-police and confiscated vehicles are sold at auction for the same reason any vehicles are sold at auction, which is convenience. Of course these vehicles could be sold for higher prices if they were sold on lots or through Autotrader, etc. The thing is, it would take huge resources and much more time and effort to sell each vehicle individually to retail buyers.
Even if they were sold for considerably more than they go for at auction, the extra costs involved with selling to retail would be higher than the extra money raised. This is why you get the chance to bag a bit of a bargain buying from an auction.

Gsa Government Fleet Vehicles
There are many thousands of vehicles sold by the government that are not directly used for law enforcement but are actually fleet cars used by civil servants in every part of government you can think of. These vehicles have been leased by the government in just the same way as a private or public company would lease them typically for between 3 and 5 years.
These vehicles are bought, leased, managed, serviced, maintained and disposed of by a division of the federal government called the U.S. General Services Administration .
GSA vehicles are generally of good quality and have been properly maintained according to the manufacturers guidelines. I purposely used the term disposed of to describe what the GSA does with these vehicles when they need to get rid of them because the leases are up. GSA vehicles are sold as are well-maintained, low-mileage, detailed, and ready to drive, so these are a pretty safe bet and that means prices might not be as low as you might hope.
The federal government uses taxpayers money to buy these vehicles and its certainly not in the business of making a profit out of them when the time comes to replace them. All the GSA needs to do is get them sold and this is why they sometimes get sold for seriously low prices.

Confiscated Or Seized Vehicles
Some of the vehicles that are the most interesting to those looking for a bargain at government auctions are those that have been seized or confiscated from criminals or criminal enterprises. There are many reasons why the police and feds seize vehicles and the diversity of vehicles confiscated them can be staggering.
A lot of vehicles seized will be fairly run-of-the-mill models such as Fusions, Malibus, Escapes, Regals and the like. They could have been seized from crooks who were using them for their criminal endeavors, but they can also from hauls of stolen vehicles that criminals have been trying to move on to be broken down for parts.
Now I know what youre thinking here. Does this include the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and other exotic models that some criminals own and drive before they get caught? The answer is yes it does, but theres a catch. When these exotic, high-end and rare cars are seized by the cops or feds they usually end up being sold through special government auctions. Sometimes these special auctions are advertised on a limited basis, but sometimes they can be by invitation only Im afraid.
