How To Pitch Your Idea To The Nbmaa

As the contests name suggests, the Scale-Up Pitch Challenge revolves around a pitching process, in which entrants explain their business to a panel of judges.

Your pitch should discuss:

  • Who the target market is
  • What value the product/service adds to customers lives
  • What sets the product apart from competitors
  • How it will generate revenue
  • How much revenue they expect in the first year

Each business gets three minutes to deliver their initial pitch, which must be accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation. The pitch segment is followed by a three-minute Q& A session with the panel of judges.

As the organization states on its website, the goal of the Scale-Up Pitch Challenge is to help members create businesses that are scalable. So if you decide to apply, be prepared to discuss your plans for scaling with the panel.

Eligibility To Get Minority Business Grants

If you want to apply for this program, then you must be eligible for this program. And if you are eligible for this great program, then you can get free money for minorities. And the minority does not only mean a particular race or community. Even it includes ethnic groups such as African-Americans, American Indians, Hispanics, and many more. Federal grants for minorities are the best program. However, along with that, even it also includes people with cerebral palsy or similar illnesses, and as well adults single mothers, etc., and also those having a low income or members of the LGBT community, and differently-abled people are also eligible for minority grants. And the best thing is to include low-income families and ill people for the minority grants. And all these are eligible for the minority grants.

However, at the times, minority grants are also given to the start-ups as federal minority grants, and that bear the startup costs but when it is possible if your business is eligible for the same.

Are There Any Downsides To Business Grants

A variety of factors make many business owners skeptical of the free money that business grants offer. While every grant has a different application period, rules, terms, and conditions, here are some potential downsides you should keep in mind when applying.

As mentioned above, business grant funds are taxable income for IRS purposes. The funds will still be free money for your business, but you will need to make sure you dont spend the entire payout without planning for the added income in your tax bill.

Business grant applications take time. Youre already a time-crunched business owner wearing a million hats, do you really have time to apply for every business grant opportunity you come across? Its a valid complaint about business grants. The likelihood of winning the grant can be small depending on the size of the contest, so you have to make your own cost/benefit analysis to figure out if your most precious asset time is worth it.

Small business grants may require campaigning. Many business grants require a social media component, where you campaign or share something publicly about your grant application. Thats not necessarily a negative if you have an active and vocal social media following, but campaigning does take additional time and some business owners may understandably not want to be as public about their search for money.

Minority Small Business Grants

Editorial Note: The content of this article is based on the authors opinions and recommendations alone. It may not have been reviewed, commissioned or otherwise endorsed by any of our network partners.

Minority small business grants can help business owners who belong to historically marginalized communities obtain the capital resources they need. People of color often face more challenges related to securing funding than their white peers, and minority business grants help close the gap. Theyre available from public and private entities and, unlike loans, which must be repaid with interest, grants typically do not require repayment.

The Native American Business Development Institute Grant

The NABDI Grant, funded by the U.S. Department of the Interiors Bureau of Indian Affairs, provides funding to business owners of Native American or Alaskan Native descent. In 2019, the program provided more than $727,000 to 21 indigenous tribes to support economic feasibility studies for specific economic development projects or business startups.

Why Is The List Of Minority Grants So Short

New grant for minority-owned businesses

Our list of minority grants is shorter than others out there. And frankly, thats because we stuck to actual grants for minority-owned businesses. Other lists . . . dont.

To show you what we mean, lets break down some of the grants youll find on other lists.

For example, the MBDA extends grants to organizations that run its Minority Business Centersnot to businesses. Likewise, the USDAs Rural Business Development Grants go to entities that help small businesses in rural areas.

Even the Native American Business Development Institute Grant goes to tribes doing feasibility studies on proposed businesses rather than to businesses themselves.

And the SBA 8 Business Development program doesnt do grants at all. It does help socially and economically disadvantaged businesses, yes, but it does that by helping them get government contracts and getting business training.

See what were talking about?

And unfortunately, we werent able to find too many real grants for minority business owners. Several we did find were one-time grants, and the deadlines were already past.

That should give you hope, though, because it means that other grants for minority business owners will come upif you know where to look.

Here Is A Resource Roundup For Any Startup Founder Interested In Small Business Grants Geared Towards Immigrants And Minorities

Looking for small business grants that are geared towards immigrants and minorities? Well, youâre not the only one. Business grants are often described as âfree money,â so they tend to be pretty popular.

But, here at Startups, we hate the term âfree money.â Itâs a word that people throw around a lot when theyâre talking about grants. The reason we donât call small business grants âfree moneyâ is because they take a lot of work to get. And thereâs a lot of competition, so oftentimes that work doesnât even result in a payday. Sure, you donât have to pay back a small business grant the way you do a business loan â but itâs certainly not âfree money.â

However, we also understand that minority business grants can really boost a startup, if they qualify. And itâs not like other forms of startup funding â like venture capital, angel investment, and even crowdfunding â donât also take a lot of time and effort. So, we thought weâd throw together some resources for any startup founders who are interested in getting a minority business grant.
