Documents You Need To Provide

We’ll also ask you to gather some documents and drop them off to one of our service centres. We’ll let you know what documents you need to get. These could be:

  • proof of who you are, such as your birth certificate, passport or driver licence
  • proof of any income you’ve got in the last 52 weeks, such as wages, holiday pay, family tax credits and any other income
  • proof of any assets you have and their value
  • your business accounts, if you have your own business
  • trust documents, if you’re involved in a trust, such as trust deed, deed of debt, gift statements, or accounts
  • full birth certificates for each dependent child in your care.

We may ask you to bring the same documents for other members of your household who are moving with you. Household members are people who permanently live with you.

Privately Owned Subsidized Housing

Privately owned subsidized housing includes apartment complexes that maintain a certain number of units for subsidized housing. The complex is not owned or operated by HUD. Rent is usually not completely subsidized. The complex does receive a tax credit for having tenants qualified for PHA housing or subsidies. Once you have applied at the PHA office, ask your caseworker for a list of privately owned subsidized housing options. You will need to apply directly with the complex for consideration. This is a good option for a family experiencing a temporary hardship but foresees being able to later rent from the complex without the subsidy and without having to move again.

Is A Low Income Housing Application The Same As Affordable Housing Application

Sometimes the terminology used to describe low income housing and other programs like it can be a little confusing. Low income housing in some cases are federal housing subsidy programs meant to help a low income family or individual. You may have heard of low income housing rental assistance, low rent housing, or affordable housing. These are terms that people use to describe the kind of housing they are looking for if they are in need of a low rentsituation.

In general, affordable housing application programs provide houses and low rent apartments designed especially for families with who cannot afford safe, decent housing nation wide.

How do I find this type of housing?

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a program from the Department of Housing and Urban Development . It helps families with a low income, seniors, and people with disabilities pay for rental housing.

You can find housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. Housing Choice vouchers can pay for all or part of the rent.

Can I Choose Where I Want To Live

When you apply for housing assistance you can choose an area or town where you would prefer to live. The areas where social housing is available are grouped into allocation zones.

We will check which allocation zone your selection is in, and if you are eligible and approved for social housing, list you on the NSW Housing Register for properties in that allocation zone.

We aim to house people where they would prefer to live but we canât guarantee specific locations. The location of the property we offer you when itâs your turn to be housed will depend on where the next vacancy that matches the type of housing you need occurs within the allocation zone you are listed in. This means that we might offer you housing in ANY of the suburbs that are grouped into the allocation zone you are approved for.

You need to be aware that the waiting times are much longer in some areas than in others. Some allocation zones are called âhigh-demandâ zones because the demand for housing in these zones is greater than the number of properties that become available. If you select a high-demand zone, you may be asked to select another zone or else be prepared to wait a very long time for an offer of housing.

PHAs in cities maintain programs that help individuals and families. Apply at your local PHA. Be mindful that preference is given to those who are working at least part-time, are attending school or are disabled elderly. Applicants must pass a background check, have no criminal history and be legal residents. They cannot have consumer debt exceeding 60 percent of the household income.

The application process at the PHA includes gathering the names of all family members who will live in the housing and providing their dates of birth, Social Security numbers and recent housing and employment histories. Most PHA offices have waiting lists speak with your caseworker about alternative options. Be prepared with all information to ensure you get on the list the same day you go. If you have to bring in paperwork such as pay stubs at a later date, you will delay your application.

There are three main types of affordable rental housing that are supported by HUD:
