Americans collect about $3 billion every year in unclaimed property payouts, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. However, that massive amount is a pittance compared to how much money states actually hold — estimated at $77 billion by tax software company Sovos.

Totals of unclaimed property payouts are reaching new heights — Wyoming, West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Missouri all recently announced record levels. North Carolina topped the list with $70 million returned over the past year.

Across the U.S., millions of dollars wait in old bank accounts, forgotten retirement and pension plans, and tax refunds for their legal owners to claim them. Most frequently, money goes unclaimed because of misaddressed mail or checks, or notifications werent forwarded after recipients moved.

Once you know where to look, you also can apply some basic methods for finding missing money and getting that money back. Below, well share 8 places you can look.

    Unclaimed Money From Bankruptcy

When a business or individual declares bankruptcy, usually their non-essential assets are liquidated to pay off creditors. In other cases, the business will remain operational and the profits will go towards paying off creditors. Either way, if youre owed money from a bankruptcy declaration and havent received any payment, you should check the U.S. Courts Unclaimed Funds Locator.

The courts make every effort to get money to creditors, but they may have had an incorrect address for you, may have issued a check that was lost or never deposited, or you may be related to the original recipient and can fill out a claim form on their behalf. Because bankruptcy funds go through the state and federal court system, you typically wont find these doing a standard state search.

    Is Unclaimedorg Legit

Yes, Unclaimed.org is the official website of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. The NAUPA is itself a network of the National Association of State Treasurers, which is based in Washington, DC.

I tested the website and while it didnt find any unclaimed money for myself, it found unclaimed money for my friend Michelle P. Here are the screenshots.

Michelle went to unclaimed.org and clicked Find and Claim.

After selecting her state, she landed in her state comptrollers website. Once there, she completed the following form:

    Who Owns This Debt

The public owes 74 percent of the current federal debt. Intragovernmental debt accounts for 26 percent or $5.9 trillion. The public includes foreign investors and foreign governments. These two groups account for 30 percent of the debt. Individual investors and banks represent 15 percent of the debt.

The Federal Reserve is holding 12 percent of the treasuries issued. The Federal Reserve has been purchasing these bonds to keep interest rates low after the 2008 Financial Crisis. States and local governments hold 5 percent of the debt.

Foreign governments who have purchased U.S. treasuries include China, Japan, Brazil, Ireland, the U.K. and others. China represents 29 percent of all treasuries issued to other countries, which corresponds to $1.18 trillion. Japan holds the equivalent of $1.03 trillion in treasuries.

Investing in U.S. treasuries is a deliberate strategy for foreign countries. China has been using these bonds to keep the Yuan weaker than the U.S. dollar and benefit from low import prices. Intragovernmental debt encompasses different funds and holdings.

Some agencies take in revenues and use this money to purchase treasury bonds. This makes the revenues usable by other agencies, and these bonds can be redeemed in the future when these funds and holdings need money.
