What Happens After You Submit Your Application
After you submit your application remember, read the announcement carefully and submit all required documents by the deadline! Human Resources will review your package to be sure it is complete. If not, agencies generally will eliminate you from the process. Almost no HR office will contact you to tell you your package is incomplete thats your responsibility.
If the application is complete, HR specialists decide if you are qualified whether you can do the job. Candidates are then scored against job-unique criteria, and the best qualified candidates are forwarded to the hiring official following OPM and agency rules. If there are a lot of best qualified applicants, hiring officials may use a screening panel to narrow down the list of candidates to be interviewed.
The hiring official then goes through a process, makes a selection, and notifies HR. HR makes the official job offer and notifies all the non-selects.
Notification to non-selects does not go out until someone has accepted the job. However, some agencies will notify you if youre screened out. If the HR specialist determines you are not qualified, you probably will hear from HR relatively soon after you apply.

In addition to your military work-ethic characteristics, which Bell called soft skills, there are also certain hard skills acquired in the military that can translate into civilian career success. For example, depending on your MOS , you may have been trained in highly complex equipment like information technology, or as a sonar technician, machinist mate, and many more disciplines. This training and education can often be transferred to a similar field in the civilian arena.
You can look for a precise lateral transition, if you enjoyed your MOS. I worked with one student who found a construction management job that aligned with her Navy jobs, said James Lindsay, military employer relations partner at SNHU whose family’s military service dates back to WWI. She therefore went on and completed her degree in construction management.
Entering With Prior Experience
If you are entering the private security field as a military or law enforcement veteran or as a first responder, then you are setting yourself up for success. You will have no issues gaining employment as an unarmed or armed security guard and, often times, your prior experience will stack you well above those without military or law enforcement experience.
If executive protection jobs are something you wish to transition into, there are a few schools in the country accepting the G.I. Bill to pay for this type of coursework. Costs for reputable courses can exceed $20,000 for a little over a months worth of training at their facilities. Veterans Employment Opportunities Act
The Veterans Employment Opportunities Act gives veterans access to federal job opportunities that might otherwise be closed to them. The law re-quires that:
- Agencies allow eligible veterans to compete for vacancies advertised under the agencys merit promotion procedures when the agency is seeking applications from individuals outside its own workforce.
- All merit promotion announcements open to applicants outside an agencys workforce include a statement that these eligible veterans may apply.
The law also establishes a new redress system for preference eligibles and makes it a prohibited personnel practice for an agency to knowingly take or fail to take a personnel action if that action or failure to act would violate a statutory or regulatory veterans preference requirement.
This authority permits an agency to appoint an eligible veteran who has applied under an agency merit promotion announcement that is open to candidates outside the agency.
To be eligible a candidate must be a preference eligible or a veteran separated after three years or more of continuous active service performed under honorable conditions.
Those with derived preference are also eligible for VEOA. There is not a requirement to select a VEOA applicant over another applicant as in a VRA appointment to an external announcement. Another difference is that there is no requirement for the positions applied for to be lower than a GS-11 as there is under VRA criteria.

Vets With A Service Connected Disability
You are a 10 point preference eligible if you served at any time, and you:
- Have a service connected disability
- Received a Purple Heart
- Are the spouse, widow, widower, or mother of a deceased or disabled veteran
When applying for federal jobs, eligible veterans should claim preference on their application or résumé. Applicants claiming disability, 10-point preference, must complete form SF-15, Application for 10-Point Veteran Preference. Veterans who are still in the service may be granted five points tentative preference on the basis of information contained in their applications, but they must produce a DD Form 214 prior to appointment to document their entitlement to preference.
