Federal government to pay $5,000 for home energy retrofits

The Bureau of Reclamation hosted a webinar on Friday, August 27, 2021, at 1 pm MDT to discuss eligible applicants and project types, program requirements, and the evaluation criteria for three recently announced Funding Opportunities: Water and Energy Efficiency Grants , Drought Resiliency Projects , and Environmental Water Resources Projects . to view a recording of the webinar.

Space And Water Heating

Furnaces are not eligible under the Canada Greener Homes Grant. The only exception is when you reside in an off-grid community, please review the information on north and off-grid communities if it applies.

Canadaâs cold climate means that space heating accounts for over 60% of the energy used in the average Canadian home. Learn more about energy-efficient heating equipment

Many homes in moderate climates can rely on heat pumps to heat or cool their homes year-round. In colder climates, a cold-climate heat pump is more effective and reduces the need for a supplementary heating source. A heat pump is an electrically driven device that extracts heat from a low temperature place and delivers it to a higher temperature place. Learn more about heat pumps

A contractor or energy advisor can help with estimating the economics of heat pumps in your area and the potential savings you can achieve. Heat pumps in general can come at a higher cost compared to other heating systems due to the number of components in the system. In some regions and cases, this added cost can be recouped and significant GHG savings can be made in a relatively short period through energy cost savings. However, in other regions, varying utility rates can extend this period. Speak with your energy advisor to see if a heat pump is right for you.

What Is The Aim Of The Program

To help businesses and community organisations save energy and lower bills through:

  • equipment upgrades that reduce energy consumption
  • investment in energy and emissions monitoring and management systems to better manage energy use
  • completion of energy systems assessments according to the Australian Standard or feasibility studies to investigate energy efficiency opportunities
  • for community organisations only, energy generation and storage projects generator systems and batteries).

    Home Energy Efficiency Grants Programs

Home energy efficiency grants are also available through Federal Tax Credits. The taxpaying citizens provide tax credits for some projects including improvement for energy efficiency, solar energy, fuel cells, and microturbine systems. The eligibility and expiration dates vary and those can be changed regularly. You can find more information from irs.gov.

It is also possible for you to find home energy efficiency grants from the state, local, and utility programs. There are many grants from government and other funds which are distributed through state or local agencies or community projects. You are recommended to contact your local energy and water supplier to get more information. Most Local Housing Departments also provide a form containing more information.

In finding home energy efficiency grants, you are recommended to find Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant programs. The main function of the program is promoting the home energy audits, weatherization, and much more. The grant is taken from $3.2 million in economic stimulus funds which are allotted for energy efficiency and conservation projects.

When you are applying for home energy efficiency grants, you should know that the grant is only available for people who meet the requirements. Due to this reason, you are recommended to check all the qualifications before applying for the grants. There is a possibility that your grants will be rejected if you do not meet their requirements.

How Can A Homeowner Get The Most Bang For The Buck

Experts say that homeowners should carefully consider their renovation priorities before jumping in. Is the house too hot in the summer? Is it drafty in the winter? Is it time to fix that leaky foundation? How big is the building’s carbon footprint? Homes and buildings account for 18 per cent of the country’s carbon emissions.

Because the surge in demand for the program is driving up wait times for energy advisers and contractors, applicants probably will have to wait longer than they’d like for repairs to begin.

“I think there’s such high demand right now, and there’s only so much capacity in all the provinces and to be able to respond to this,” Sundberg said. “It’s probably best to pause for a moment, think about what the upgrades you might want to do, potentially think about what kind of contractors you would want to work with.”

And there’s no rush the Greener Homes Grant will be available for the next seven years. In fact, by thinking through their home retrofit goals in advance, many homeowners may decide it’s quicker and cheaper to do the work without waiting for government help.

Meanwhile, some municipal governments including Edmonton and Toronto are offering their own home retrofit assistance tied to a homeowner’s property taxes. Such municipal programs are better known as Property Assessed Clean Energy, or PACE for short.
