The good news is that people who are unable to work due to the effects of a stroke do not have to live without an income or medical insurance. Social Security Disability benefits can help offset some of the financial burden caused by this catastrophic event.
The monthly checks that are sent by the Social Security Administration can help stroke victims make ends meet and the Medicare benefits can help pay for the ongoing care that is needed by many stroke patients.

Reducing The Cost Of Pharmaceuticals
Much of the financial burden associated with a stroke can be attributed to the cost of pharmaceuticals. There are two resources that provide up-to-date lists of programs that may help. First, NeedyMeds.com provides a database of assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies. Second, RxAssist.org lists several public and private resources available for qualifying individuals.
Using A Medical Vocational Allowance
If you cannot meet the criteria of a listing, but you are disabled, you may qualify through a medical vocational allowance. This approach takes your age, medical conditions, work history, skills, and educational background all into consideration.
Your treating physician will need to provide a residual functional capacity , which details your restrictions and limitations.
Your RFC should indicate how long you can stand, how far you can walk, how much you can carry, if you can lift, if you can squat or bend, if you can reach and grasp, and how often you must reposition yourself. It will allow the disability
examiner to determine if you are able of working, and if you can work, what kid of work you are capable of performing.

What To Expect After A Stroke
If you have had a stroke, you can make great progress in regaining your independence. However, some problems may continue:
- Paralysis , weakness, or both on one side of the body.
- Trouble with thinking, awareness, attention, learning, judgment, and memory.
- Problems understanding or forming speech.
- Trouble controlling or expressing emotions.
- Numbness or strange sensations.
- Pain in the hands and feet that worsens with movement and temperature changes.
- Trouble with chewing and swallowing.
- Problems with bladder and bowel control.
- Depression.
Rehab can include working with speech, physical, and occupational therapists.
- Speech therapy helps people who have problems producing or understanding speech.
- Physical therapy uses exercises to help you relearn movement and coordination skills you may have lost because of the stroke.
- Occupational therapy focuses on improving daily activities, such as eating, drinking, dressing, bathing, reading, and writing.
Therapy and medicine may help with depression or other mental health conditions following a stroke. Joining a patient support group may help you adjust to life after a stroke. Talk with your health care team about local support groups, or check with an area medical center.

Help With Health Costs
In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland prescriptions are free for everyone. In England they are free for certain people, including those over 60 and under 16.
NHS Low Income Scheme
If you are on a low income you could get help with health costs such as prescriptions, dental care, fares to appointments, eye tests and glasses. To do this you have to apply for a certificate. Depending on your circumstances you may get a certificate that will cover all of these costs, or one that partially covers them.
The Low Income Scheme can help you with other health costs such as dental treatment or glasses.
If you or your partner receive Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA or Pension Guarantee Credit you dont need to apply for a certificate. These benefits already entitle you to full help with health costs.
If you need help before your claim for these benefits has been assessed you can still apply for a certificate.
How do I apply for the NHS Low Income Scheme?

Prescription prepayment certificates
If youre not eligible for the NHS Low Income Scheme, but pay for a lot of prescriptions, a Prescription Prepayment Certificate could still save you money.

Preparing and planning for the cost of stroke care can aid you in navigating the expenses that stroke survivors may face. To prepare beforehand:
- Have an up-to-date ID card and insurance card.
- If you are not yet insured, consider your insurance options and get insured.
- Prepare and keep personal files of all paperwork. Make sure your family and advocates know where you keep your paperwork.
- Review the details of your insurance and what they cover.
- Make any necessary appeals as quickly as possible.
- Seek out advocates and counselors to navigate the lengthy process of obtaining and receiving care, as well as financial help.
- Ask your care provider what the estimated costs are early on in the treatment process, and what type of rehabilitation options are available to you.

Your doctors, therapists and discharge planners should be able to advise you on the equipment you will need at home.
Benefits If You Care For Someone Who Has An Illness Or Disability
Carers Allowance
If you spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone, you may be able to receive Carers Allowance. The weekly rate is £67.60.
You dont have to be related to or live with the person you care for to claim, but you must be over the age of 16 and the person you care for has to be receiving AA, DLA or PIP.
Carers Allowance is means-tested. You can only claim if you earn less than £128 a week from paid work, after tax and your expenses for caring have been taken off.
There are other reasons you cant claim, including being in full-time education. Claiming Carers Allowance can affect other benefits that you or the person you care for receive.

The Australian Government will invest $1 million to improve recovery and rehabilitation and help stroke survivors back to work.

The package will include a clinical trial of Perispinal Etanercept in Australian stroke patients.
Perispinal Etanercept has been used been used in the United States to treat chronic stroke and brain injury in selected patients. This is the first clinical trial of its type in Australia.
The treatment is predicted to reduce inflammation in the brain and therefore strokes impact.
There are more than 475,000 stroke survivors living in the community and one third of stroke survivors are under the age of 65.

Can I Continue Working After A Stroke
Whether you are able to work or not is dependent on the severity of your stroke and how it has affected your ability to work and perform routine tasks. A stroke can affect both your physical and mental capacity to work and earn a living.
Your memory, concentration, ability to focus, mood, behavior, and social life can be affected by a stroke. Your ability to walk, stand, get up from a seated position, use your extremities, grasp items, and so forth can also be affected.
A stroke may affect your hearing, vision, or taste. While some people only suffer one side effect from the stroke, others suffer multiple problems. Some individuals make a full recovery, but others are less fortunate and donât return to their pre-stroke levels even after intensive care and treatment.
Make sure you tell your physician all your symptoms and limitations, detailing how the stroke has affected you. Your physician will document everything in your medical notes.
Those medical notes will be reviewed by the disability examiner to determine if you qualify for disability benefits. If you are unable to work because of a stroke, you should enlist the help of a disability attorney.
