Government Funding For Manufacturers: Build A Plan

New Green Homes Grant scheme – What installers need to know

Canadian manufacturers are a primary target for some of the most valuable government funding programs available. While its possible to access funding programs on a project-by-project basis, we recommend incorporating grants and loans as part of your overall growth strategy. To do this, we recommend that all manufacturers take time to construct a government funding plan.

Government funding plans are a proactive means to offset a portion of all strategic project costs with manufacturing grants and loans.

The first step is to identify all company investments over the coming 12-24 months. With this roadmap in mind, it becomes easier to align government funding programs, either independently or by using a Canadian Government Funding Planner. Mentor Works routinely supports Canadian manufacturers with government funding planning, application, and reporting. To learn more about some of these success stories, check out our Client Spotlight blogs.

Please Note: Agri-food manufacturers will find more applicable funding programs from the Top 4 Funding Programs for Ontarios Agri-Food Industry.

Fluorescent Lamp And Mercury Recycling

The operation of government buildings requires hundreds of thousands of fluorescent light bulbs.

These bulbs, while energy efficient, contain modest amounts of Mercury, a toxic substance that has adverse effects on the environment if disposed of improperly.

Many components of a fluorescent lamp tube are recyclable.

Since the inception of this recycling program, we have disposed of and recycled approximately 350,000 fluorescent light bulbs amounting to 50,000 kg of glass, 700 kg of metal, 800 kg of phosphor, and over 6 kg of Mercury.

Additional items recycled under this program include HID/UV/HPS bulbs, halogen and compact fluorescent bulbs, and thermometers.

Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design

The Alberta Government has committed to environmentally friendly building design and construction by adopting the LEED® sustainable rating system, with a minimum Silver level as the standard for all new major construction projects since 2006 – including new schools, museums and hospitals.

LEED® Silver buildings cost up to 5% more than conventional buildings but are up to 45% more energy-efficient than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings.

How Do I Write A Grant

The process of preparing for an application package is often referred to as “grant writing”. As mentioned previously, many people fail to receive grants due to inadequate application package. When a grant opportunity is published, the requirements are clearly laid out in the description. You as the applicant must, at minimum, include all the materials requested. And to stand out among the rest of applicants, you must go beyond the requirements and provide additional information that will convince the grant issuer and award you the funding requested. Applicants need to understand that funding is limited for each grant opportunity, and is awarded to the most qualified applicants.

The preparation of an application package is a complex process. The United States government has created an online tool – workspace – as an additional option to help applicants to collaborate and prepare files in an application package. A funding opportunity may require a numerous amount of materials including your organization’s business plan and historical and current data.

Remember that your application package will be competing with application packages submitted by other individuals and/or organizations. Therefore, it is in your organization’s best interest to spend a substantial amount of time in preparing for your application package.
