Debt Relief: Understand Your Options And The Consequences

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list ofour partnersandhere’s how we make money.

Find that you’re just not making progress on your debt, no matter how hard you try? If that’s the case, you might be facing overwhelming debt.

To break free of this financial burden, look into your debt relief options. These tools can change the terms or amount of your debt so you can get back on your feet more quickly.

But debt-relief programs are not the right solution for everyone, and its important to understand what the consequences might be.

Debt relief could involve wiping the debt out altogether in bankruptcy getting changes in your interest rate or payment schedule to lower your payments or persuading creditors to agree to accept less than the full amount owed.

What Is Debt Consolidation

If youre wondering about the difference between debt settlement and debt consolidation, here are some details to keep in mind. Where debt settlement involves working with a debt relief company to settle your debts for less than what you owe, debt consolidation requires you to take out a new financial product to consolidate all your existing debts.

With debt consolidation, youll move all your old debts to the new loan with a lower APR or better terms. While the goal of debt consolidation is saving money, debt consolidation can also help you go from paying multiple debt payments each month down to just one.

Option : Enroll In A Debt Management Program Through A Credit Counseling Agency

The benefit of professional help: A debt management program is the solution you use if you cant make progress on your own. If you dont have good credit or youve missed some payments, your creditors may be resistant to working with you. Having the help of a credit counseling agency means you get a team of negotiators on your side. That makes it easier to craft a repayment plan that your creditors will actually accept.

How It Works:

  • First, you talk to a certified credit counselor to review all your options. The counselor makes sure a debt management program is the right solution otherwise, they can direct you on where to go.
  • If debt management is the right choice, they can help you enroll. Together, you find a monthly payment that works for your budget.
  • Then the counselor calls each of your creditors to get them to sign off on the adjusted repayment schedule.
  • They also negotiate to reduce or eliminate interest charges, as well as to stop future penalties.
  • How Does Debt Relief Affect Your Credit

CREDIT CARD DEBT FREE!!! : povertyfinance

The effect of debt relief on your credit score depends on which option you use. Any solution that pays back everything you borrowed should have a neutral or positive impact on your credit. Reducing interest charges or eliminating fees does not result in credit damage. On the other hand, any solution that gets you out of debt for less than the full amount owed damages your credit score.

Refinancing will not damage your credit as long as you make all the payments as scheduled. The same is true of a consolidation or a modified loan. Negotiating a lower rate on a credit card will also not have any negative effect on your credit. Deferment and forbearance also do not hurt your credit, because the creditor agrees to change your payment schedule.

The impact of workout arrangements and credit card debt management programs is usually neutral or positive. These solutions help you avoid missed payments and build a positive credit history. Most credit users dont see any damage to their credit using these solutions. However, these methods will close the accounts. This can have a slightly negative effect on your credit, but the damage is usually nominal.

Solutions like debt settlement, short sales, and voluntary surrender all damage your credit. You incur a seven-year negative remark on your credit report for each of these. Foreclosure and Chapter 13 bankruptcy also result in a seven-year credit penalty. Chapter 7 bankruptcy has a 10-year penalty. Back to top

As the United States heads into the third month of the coronavirus crisis, consumers are being squeezed by compounding forces. Thirty percent have reported that their income has declined since the start of the pandemic.

Household debt has reached $14.3 trillion the first quarter of 2020

Federal Reserve Bank of New York

This decline in income coincides with a peak in overall household debt, which rose by 1.1 percent to $14.3 trillion during the first quarter of 2020, according to the latest Household Debt and Credit Report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This is $1.6 trillion higher than the previous peak in 2008, but doesnt fully account for coronvirus effects given that the data only goes through March 31. It is critical to note that the latest report reflects a time when many of the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic were only starting to be felt, said Andrew Haughwout, a senior vice president at the New York Fed.

Simultaneously, overall consumer spending has declined precipitously as Americans increase their savings rate given uncertainty and as shelter-in-place restrictions have led to the cancellation of both one-off events and routine activities. This is a harbinger for the economy given that consumer spending drives growth and is to key not only to recovery in the short term, but also to balanced longer term growth.

How Much Does Debt Relief Cost

Debt relief companies tend to offer a free consultation to get the process started. From there, they charge performance-based fees that typically work out to a percentage of the debt amount you have enrolled.

Based on the companies we profiled, common debt relief charges work out to 15% to 25% of the total debts enrolled in a program. This means that, if you sign up for a debt settlement program with $10,000 in credit card debt, you may wind up paying $1,500 to $2,500 to get it resolved. And remember, thats on top of the amount you pay your creditors to settle your debts.

Get A Written Copy Of Your Agreement

If you choose to move forward with a financial relief option, its important to understand the terms of the agreement before agreeing to anything. Once youve accepted a relief option, make sure to get a copy of the agreement in writing.

    Check Your Credit Reports Regularly

You can typically check your credit reports for free, once a year. However, the three major credit reporting agencies Experian, TransUnion and Equifax are currently allowing consumers to check their reports weekly for free.

If you sign-up for a credit card relief package and are meeting the terms of that relief package, such as making a lower minimum payment, the company must report to the credit reporting agencies that you are current on the account. However, if you were already behind on your payments at the time you receive relief, the lender is not required to report that you are current.

And, if you find an error, you should work to dispute it, this is when it would be helpful to have a copy of the written agreement on hand.
