Virtual Volunteer Opportunities For High School Students

For just about every teen on Earth, the first half of 2020 has not gone as anticipated. High school students everywhere are grieving the loss of proms, graduation ceremonies, and everyday joys that may have previously been taken for granted. And of course, young people only dealing with losses of that nature are, in a relative sense, the lucky ones. Countless others are mourning the death of a loved one due to COVID-19 or having to shoulder the stress of one or both parents losing their jobs.

And yet, sometimes the ideal way to distract yourself from your own struggles is to find a selfless pursuit. As Gandhi once said, The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Of course, this coronavirus pandemic, insidious and suffocating as it has been, greatly limits the ways in which you can engage in charitable endeavors. Given the challenging realities of social distancing and various degrees of quarantine, the best way to feel useful and make a contribution to your local community is to volunteer online. What follows are five ways you can be of service from the safety of your own home.

Volunteer Opportunities For High School Students

For high school students, volunteer work of any kind is a laudable pursuit, possessing more than enough intrinsic value to make it worth your time. Yet, dedicating your time to charitable endeavor can also help you to gain real-world experience in an area of academic and/or career interest. Perhaps you have an academic/career interest in healthcare, computer science, education, helping people with disabilities, animal rights, community organizing, assisting developing nations, conservationism, politics, history, or eldercare support. No matter your passion, there is likely a perfect volunteering opportunity out there for youtheres just that tiny matter of finding it.

College Transitions list of Volunteer Opportunities for High School Students is designed to help with you search by highlighting nationwide organizations that work with American teens from coast to coast. Of course, local opportunities can be located via your guidance counselor, word-of-mouth, or by utilizing any of the various search databases that assist with location-specific hunts. In the list that follows, we highlight whether each organization has opportunities that are in-person or virtual. Additionally, we have categorized the volunteer roles based not just on the type of organization but also, when applicable, the skill demands associated with the position . Lastly, we list any available eligibility requirements some organizations accept 9th graders while others are open only to 18-year-olds .

How To Approach Student Volunteering

Teachers might want to build on any volunteering work the school or students are already doing. They might prefer to create a new volunteer program that links to the curriculum in a way that helps with the personal development of their students.

There are several different ways to approach student volunteering. A couple of examples are:

  • as part of formal learning incorporating volunteering into classroom activity
  • extracurricular activity students decide to do volunteering in their spare time.

If your school chooses to make volunteering part of formal learning, how its incorporated can be very flexible. It could be a year-level activity connected to school values, or it could tie to the curriculum in different subjects and learning areas.

The approach can be as simple as a guest speaker on a single day or something that runs over a term.

How You Can Help

Everyone is moved when they hear the news that disaster has struck a community. By learning the best ways to donate and volunteer, we can all make a huge difference in the lives of those affected.

The most effective donation is a financial contribution to a recognized disaster relief organization. When the public supports these voluntary organizations with financial contributions, it helps ensure a steady flow of important services to the people in need after a disaster.

A financial donation

Is the most needed and the most efficient way of helping those impacted by disaster.

  • Allows voluntary organizations to fund response and recovery efforts, obtain goods and services locally, and provide direct financial assistance to disaster survivors to meet their own needs.
  • Allows you to direct the contribution to the voluntary organization of your choice.
  • If you need help in determining who to give to, Indiana and National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster are listed at the National Donations Management Network.

Volunteer with a recognized organization involved in disaster response and recovery prior to the next disaster event. There are many organizations and faith-based groups in your community that have active disaster programs and need volunteers.

  • Volunteer with a nonprofit organization and be trained before the next event to find meaningful volunteer opportunities following a disaster.
  • Get training and register to volunteer at Indiana VOAD.
