Nj Human Services Announces $15 Million In Grants For Summer Youth Camps

Human Services Acting Commissioner Sarah Adelman today announced $15 million in grants will be available for summer youth camps to help them meet health and safety protocols and provide financial assistance to eligible families.

As the public health situation improves, we are looking forward to an active summer, especially for our children, Acting Commissioner Adelman said. Attending a summer camp is a great tradition that brings many positive experiences and benefits along with great memories. Well help summer camps stay open and safe, while assisting eligible families to help their children attend a camp.

Weve taken many steps throughout the pandemic to help child care providers stay open while helping families afford care and handle remote schooling, and these summer camp grants are the next step in our ongoing effort, Deputy Commissioner Elisa Neira. We will be helping children enjoy summer safely, while providing a boost to our economy by assisting a vital summer service. Well also continue helping child care providers in as many ways as we can.

About 1,000 summer youth camp providers are eligible to apply for the funding. The camps must be registered and approved by Department of Health for the 2021 summer camp season and be open and operating an on-site program. They must also comply with local, state and federal health and safety requirements.

Grant amounts are as follows:

More than 50 children enrolled

$7,500

$23,500

Grants From Charitable Trusts

YMCA Financial Assistance

Charitable trusts are another source of potential funding for fledgling summer camps. For example, the May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust offers grants to summer camp programs in 14 states that offer services to needy children and youths. The grant amount varies depending on trust fund availability and the scope of the summer camp. The grant is typically one year in duration, but two- and three-year grants are occasionally awarded. Applicants can send a letter of inquiry and a full proposal via the trust website.

How Hiring Grants Fit Into The Recruitment Process

Now that you know the options available when it comes to hiring grants, its important to illustrate how they fit into optimizing the recruitment process. Ensuring your company completes the funding process correctly in conjunction with hiring the candidate is essential to being successful and accessing grants. Following these steps can help simplify the application process and maintain your funding eligibility:

  • Develop a candidate pool for your position
  • Screen job candidates and select one or more person to tentatively fill the position
  • Apply for hiring grants, matching the position and candidate to a relevant funding program
  • Wait approximately five business days for the governments response with funding decision
  • Hire the candidate and complete any additional documentation needed
  • After funding is in place, you can formally provide an employment offer to the candidate. Hiring a candidate and placing them on payroll prior to government funding approval can significantly complicate the process and often leads to applications being deemed ineligible.
