Boston is not known for having small price tagson anything. A recent study found that a Bostonian would need to earn $78,477 per year, just to live on their own in our crazy expensive housing market. Yikes. Its not surprising, then, that many gym memberships in town cost well north of $100 a month.
We found eight gyms, however, that wont break the bank. If you are looking for salt-infused steam rooms, eucalyptus-scented locker rooms, or spa-like amenities, the below gyms may not be for you. But if you just want a great workout with updated equipment and a low price tag, read on.

1. South End Fitness Center
The South End Fitness Center offers preventative health services in addition to regular gym amenities, and has partnerships with the Boston Public Health Commission, Boston Medical Center, and local nonprofits. The gym has the usual weights, cardio equipment, and group fitness classes, and a full-size indoor basketball court and a swimming pool. Memberships are $360 per year, which comes out to only $30 a month. Discounted rates are available for students, senior citizens, and select others.

Another Boston Sports Club Location Closes Permanently

MEDFORD, Mass.
Boston Sports Clubs is permanently closing another location.
This week, members of the Wellington Circle location at Station Landing in Medford received an email announcing that the gym will close permanently.
That location has been closed temporarily since March.
BSC’s troubled parent company filed for bankruptcy this fall after being hit hard by the pandemic.
It is also being sued by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey for trying to charge members while its doors were closed and making it incredibly difficult to cancel.

Bsc Gym Seeks Second Chance
Everyone loves a good comeback story. Boston Sports Clubs Wellesley Assistant General Manager Zac Marcou hopes the gym hes helping to run will be one of them.
Marcou doesnt sugarcoat BSCs recent past, one that spurred the Commonwealths Attorney General to sue the bankrupt parent organization for making life miserable for members who tried to leave and were charged even when the gyms were closed during the pandemic. Marcou himself was given 2 days notice before the BSC Waltham gym he previously worked at shut down for good, putting an abrupt end to his front desk job there.
The new BSC team in Wellesley now seeks to earn back the goodwill of existing members and let word of mouth attract newcomers ready to get back in the gym. Understaffed like so many local businesses, BSC operates almost like a startup, Marcou says, with the team innovating to come up with improvements.
Honestly, theres very little that I can say thatll make folks want to give the Club another shot, other than my word, says Marcou, a wildlife biologist by training.
BSC has taken steps to make its gym more attractive under its new ownership , though has stopped short of a full rebranding.
I stopped by the gym after Marcou reached out to us via email, at the urging of a returning member. I mentioned my experience at the gym had actually been good, though it was a few year ago and was as part of a group that rented a basketball court weekly. My credit card wasnt involved either.

Join a Club Sport
NYU has 24 club sports teams ranging from Ice Hockey to Ballroom Dance. Some club sports are recreational or instructional in nature, while others provide the opportunity for serious league competition. Regardless of the level of commitment required by the club sport, the desire to participate is always more important than athleticism. Last year, more than 1,250 students participated in intercollegiate club sport teams, 20% of whom were graduate students.
