Floyd County Schools Joins Online Site For The Sale Of Government Surplus Items

Floyd County Schools is now using GovDeals.com for the sale of government surplus items. The Internet service helps local government agencies to dispose of surplus items that had been sold at onsite auctions in the past. Floyd County Schools will list everything from school buses to lunchroom equipment for sale on the site. The system started this week by listing a variety of surplus items from school nutrition food service areas. Items with a value of $15,000 or less will be placed for auction for one week. Items Over $15,000 will be placed for Auction for two weeks.

Alpine School District To Auction Off Surplus Buses

The Alpine School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to dispose of 34 buses and 14 art pieces, all of which will be auctioned off to the public.

According to supporting documents provided at the school board meeting, the 34 buses that will be disposed of by the district have not moved since March 2020 due to a shortage of drivers. They comprise a third of the oldest buses that the school district owns, and would be costly to repair.

Those buses are anywhere from 18 to 22 years old and they have upward of 200-t0-300,000 miles on them so they have served us well and we would like to declare those excess, said Shane Farnsworth, superintendent of Alpine School District. They get to a point where the repair costs are just cost prohibited and we need to turn them over to the public for purchase if they wish to.

According to the supporting documents, the school district has been able to update its bus fleet in recent years. By cycling out these older buses, and no longer having to pay the associated registration and insurance costs, the hope is that the Alpine Transportation Bus Garage will stay on or under budget for the first year ever in district history.

Prior to public auction and sale, vehicles and equipment are made available to other government agencies with the following priority:

• Other state agencies
• Cities, counties, and other tax entities

Government entities that want to purchase surplus vehicles or equipment from the California Department of Transportation may do so by forwarding a request on agency letterhead or a “Reutilization Program Request Form” to the Office of Fleet Administration, 802 Q Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Forms may be obtained from Office of Fleet Administration.

After the agency is recognized as a government entity and approved to participate in the Reutilization Program by the Office of Fleet Administration, they may contact the Department of Transportation. For availability of vehicles and equipment please email the Surplus Equipment and Property Program Manager at .

A representative of Department of Transportation Surplus Sales will inform the entity of the availability, condition, and location of requested equipment and make arrangements for the unit to be inspected. If the agency decides to purchase the unit, Surplus Sales will set the price and will request that a purchase order be issued.

Prices will be fair market value established by Surplus Sales, based on the current wholesale value or by using public auction data. All purchases by other agencies must be approved by the Assistant Chief of Inspection Services, Office of Fleet Administration.
