Tidbits: Farmers Not Paid To Destroy Crops
A new round of misinformation is circulating online.
This time, viral videos claim farmers are being paid by the government to destroy crops and threatening them with loss of income or the use of chemical agents on their fields if they do not comply. The goal, the videos claim, is to manipulate the food supply and oil prices.
A reader sent me the video she had received, which had stitched together clips from several TikTok and YouTube videos.
Theres just one thing the claims arent true.
The Chronicle contacted the Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Their public affairs and outreach coordinator in Nashville said there is not a program that pays farmers to destroy their crops.
Steve Wellman, director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, has fielded numerous calls about the issue. He told Hoosier Ag Today, Well, Ive seen a couple of the videos that are out there on social media and quite honestly, theres little to zero amount of truth in any of what Ive seen.
Other news outlets have gone through and debunked some of the various claims. Like the man who had a letter from the USDA he said was his crop destruction notice.
The envelope may have been from USDA, but the letter shown was from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and it was sent in January 2018. That letter was about training sessions for manure applications, the television station reported.

Basically, farmers are not eligible for government subsidies if they are not actively raising animals or growing crops so its more profitable for them to continue business as usual, but trash berries, milk, and even animals instead.
So no, the government is not forcing farmers to destroy crops or animals. However, the current agricultural system makes it so that many farmers have no other choice but to destroy their product, otherwise they will lose money.
As per Time, the same thing happened during the Great Depression so this unjust system has clearly been going on for a while.

The first lesson to learn about social media is that you shouldnt believe everything you see. Agriculture Director Steve Wellman says the rumors of farmers getting paid to destroy crops are not true. No, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture is not paying farmers to take out their corn, or any other crops and neither is the United States Department of Agriculture.
Wellman added that hes confused as to why people would post videos on TikTok with false claims about the government, especially claiming theyre hurting farmers. Theres little to zero amount of truth in any of what Ive seen. So, I dont know why the information would be put out in that manner. I think its just a good reminder for us to not always believe what we see on social media, and farmers and ranchers have been working hard to build trusting relationships with consumers for quite some time and then videos of this type that contain scare tactics and false information are really counter to building that consumer competence and trust, he said. So, in the end, its not productive for agriculture and its surely not productive for the consumers.

WASHINGTON, February 5, 2021 The U.S. Department of Agriculture is extending the Conservation Reserve Program General Signup period, which had previously been announced as ending on Feb. 12, 2021. USDA will continue to accept offers as it takes this opportunity for the incoming Administration to evaluate ways to increase enrollment.
